COURSE:
Medical Surgical 1 - Cardiovascular Nursing
PLACEMENT:
Semester 2
TIME ALLOTMENT:
40 Hours
PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to cardiovascular nursing
care concepts that will enhance their ability to provide care for the patient with cardiovascular
diseases and disorders utilizing nursing principles (34.07).
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will review cardiovascular structure and function
(28.03), identify signs and symptoms of diseases/disorders of the cardiovascular system (34.01),
identify diagnostic tests and medications used in the treatment of cardiovascular
diseases/disorders (34.02, 34.03), and identify nutritional needs of patients with cardiovascular
diseases/disorders (34.04).
SUMMARY OF UNITS:
Unit I: The Patient with Diseases/Disorders of the Heart
Unit II: The Patient with Diseases/Disorders of the Blood Vessels.
Unit III: The Patient with Diseases/Disorders of the Hematopoietic System.
METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Evaluation will be based upon written objective tests and
quizzes as well as instructor assigned projects/assignments, class participation and preparedness.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
For successful completion of this course, the student must
have an average grade of 80% based on the three unit exams/quizzes and other unit assignments.
Additionally, the student must maintain an average score of 80% from all methods of evaluation
which includes a Cardiovascular Pharmacology Calculations Quiz.

Unit I - The Patient with Diseases/Disorders of the Heart
UNIT OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Describe the structure and function of the heart, blood and lymph.
2.
Describe significant risk factors related to cardiovascular disease.
3.
Discuss the nurses role in risk factor reduction including nutritional modification.
4.
Differentiate between arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis and identify the
pathophysiology of each.
5.
Describe the pathophysiology of a specific heart disease or complication and describe
relevant treatment, nursing observations and interventions:
- Coronary Artery Disease (Coronary Atherosclerosis, Angina Pectoris, Myocardial
Infarction)
- Arrhythmias/Dysrhythmias
- Cardiogenic Shock
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Cardiomyopathy

Define diagnostic testing related to specific cardiovascular diseases.
7.
Describe appropriate nursing observations and actions to be taken when a patient reports
chest pain.
8.
Discuss the rationale for drug treatment used for cardiovascular disease.
9.
List signs of digitalis toxicity and related interventions.
10.
Describe the pathophysiology, treatment and nursing interventions of inflammatory heart
conditions of the cardiovascular system:
- Rheumatic Fever and Valvular Sequelae
- Bacterial Endocarditis
- Pericarditis

UNIT OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Describe the pathophysiology, treatment and nursing care of hypertension.

Identify and/or describe the pathophysiology, diagnostic testing, and treatment of
cerebrovascular disease.
3.
Identify and define the various signs and symptoms of cerebral vascular accident.
4.
Describe transient ischemic attacks and discuss the diagnosis, treatment and related
nursing measures.

with a cerebral aneurysm.
