Human Sciences Symposium 13/10 09 Meeting 1 - Minutes D’arcey, Cassia, Anna, Chris, Debs, and Nissa - - - - At the HS committee meeting last week, a couple of more people (Jos, Rhiannon) wanted to be in the symposium group – but missed the first meeting…(time and place wasn’t really well communicated, so no worries). If you still want to do the symposium – let us know, otherwise we do need reliable people to run the committee and the Human Sciences regular socials and activities in the 2nd term, as we were thinking that the part of the committee that’s doing the symposium should be less involved in general HS stuff in the that term because of time constraints…so if you’d rather want to do that, that would be great! Let us know. We agreed on a topic, Science and the Media, and on a title, “Can we rely on the media to report science accurately and fairly?” – but the title will probably change a little bit after we’ve done more research. The topic covers science communication, could involve someone talking about how swine flu was reported in the media, and how the medias communication of science affects policy making. Speakers could be academics and scientists, journalists or editors, and possibly a politically involved speaker would be good as well… The symposium should take place sometime in mid-march 2010, we should check available speakers before deciding fully on a date. We are intending on contacting one of the old third year students that organized the symposium at UCL the last time, and via email just ask them about their experiences and have they learnt from it. The next meeting will be on the 27th of October after Human Sciences in Society, until then… 1. Research potential speakers within each area 2. Jos and Rhiannon – let someone know if you prefer doing the symposium or committee. 3. Contact the old Human Scientist student (Anyone volunteering? Let me know, otherwise I can be responsible for that) Thank you, see you soon!
