o Literature: Read chapters 16-19 in the Scarlett Letter completely before
answering the following questions on notebook paper in complete sentences:
a. What does Hawthorne say that Pearl needs to soften and humanize
her?
b. What does Hester do to show that the past and all its problems are
behind them?
c. When Dimmesdale is told who Roger Chillingworth really is, he
declares, “We are not, Hester, the worst sinners in the world…That old
man’s revenge has been worse than my sin. He has violated, in cold
blood, the sanctity of a human heart. Thou and I, Hester, never did
so!” What does Dimmesdale mean by this? Is he correct?
d. What does Pearl ask about Arthur Dimmesdale at the end of Chapter
19? What does Pearl demand of her mother? Looking back over
previous chapters, what has Pearl asked her mother and Dimmesdale?
What does this imply?
Write a one-page paper on the following topic:
When Hester and Dimmesdale first meet in the woods, they discuss whether
they have found peace. When Dimmesdale speaks of his misery, Hester reproves him:
“You wrong yourself in this,” said Hester, gently. “You have deeply and
sorely repented. Your sin is left behind you, in the days long past. Your present life is
not less holy, in very truth, than it seems in people’s eyes. Is there no reality in the
penitence thus sealed and witnessed by good works? And wherefore should it not bring
you peace?
Dimmesdale replies:
“No, Hester, no! There is no substance in it! It is cold and dead and can do
nothing for me! Of penance I have had enough! Of penitence there has been none! Else,
I should long ago have thrown off these garments of mock holiness, and have shown
myself to mankind as they will see me at the judgment seat.”
Explain what Hester is saying and Dimmesdale’s response. Reviewing what
you know of Dimmesdale’s situation, which of these two do you feel is more correct?

Assignment Week 5
Source text: For the exercise, use the second paragraph on page 92 of Encountering
the Old Testament. It starts with “Abram was a successful and wealthy person.”
Writing Assignment:
1. Continue to practice key word outlining using no more than three key words from
each sentence of the source text. Choose your words carefully.
2. Using your keyword outline (NOT the original text), rewrite the paragraph in your
own words. For now, the paragraph should have the same number of sentences as
the original paragraph. Be sure to avoid using those banned adjectives. Use at
least three quality adjectives in your paragraph.
3. Bring your key word outline and paragraph to class next week.
