Paulo writes a weekly column which is published in several different newspapers and
magazines around the world. The columns are timeless as they deal with our everyday
questions, through them, Paulo shares some of the moments he has lived, reflex and stories.
We would love to include Egypt with the syndication of these articles.
These columns are very successful, with a faithful following. In some countries, this
collaboration has been going on for 7 consecutive years now, as in the case O' Globo (Brazil),
Reforma (Mexico) or Ecuador (El Universo) in a weekly basis. He has also been collaborating

adenddum al contrato de "El Alquimista" donde se incluye Egipto a los territorios.
En cuanto te sea posible, te agradecería que me informaras de cómo están los temas: si has
llegado a un acuerdo con un editor en Egipto y las conversaciones con Antoine para seguir
sumando territorios.
Por otro lado, ¿tienes información reciente de las ventas en Marruecos y Túnez?
Finalmente, me gustaría retomar el tema de las columnas, empezando con Marruecos. He
estado revisando los archivos y me da la impresión de que no hemos recibido las entrevistas
de las revistas femeninas. ¿Tu tienes noticias? Eran las entrevistas con Femme du Marroc, y
otra revista más. Podrían ser una buena opción para iniciar una colaboración.

Gracias. Purtroppo, hay una pequeña omisión: en el listado de países falta Mauritania (que ya
tiene Marsam) y quizás se debería incluir Palestina, que aunque no es un estado, por lo que
parece, pronto lo será. En fin, un pequeño detalle. ¿Qué fem? Te adjunto el listado de países
árabes. Abraçada i bon cap de setmana.

Egipte. L'Ana va demanar expressament afegir Egipte, cosa que és molt raonable. En l'esperit
del nostre acord, s'entén que s'afegeix Mauritània i si vols Palestina. Em sembla burocràtic
tornar a fer adendums per aquesta minúcia.
A partir d'ara, podem posar com a territori "Países árabes" con exclusividad y "World" sin
exclusividad.

I am writing to you to tell you that The Zahir in English has just started its journey, beginning in
the Uk and India and will travel to South Africa and America and finally to Australia over the next
few months.
I also wanted to to let you know that Paulo Coelho will be the guest on a CNN programme
today called "Business International" The writer will be talking to Becky Anderson about O
Zahir.This will be broadcast on CNN
International today at 11.00 GMT. The programme will be repeated throughout the day on the
news.
The author was at the Oxford Union on Tuesday (http://www.oxford-union.org/last) answering
questions from a large group of university students which was a huge success. Yesterday he
was at the Front Line Club, the war correspondents club in London at an event hosted by Emily
Buchanan, the award winning journalist and BBC broadcaster, for the official launch. The guests
include journalists, influential members of the Front line Club and a selection of booksellers.

Gemma, my colleague who is in charge of the columns, has informed me that Aztag has four
overdue invoices and that she has not had any news from them for some time.
As things stand I think it would be best to stop sending them columns until this situation has
been sorted out. We are very sad about taking this decision but it is important that Paulo's
columns should be valued as the author's other work and a newspaper should not stop
answering our mails and not pay their invoices.
On the other hand, please remember that we would like to see your marketing plan as well as
the cover with the texts. It would be a good idea to have these before the Summer holidays.
Could you also confirm O Zahir's publication date?

Aztag had temporarily discontinued publishing Paulo's articles in the
following weeks of the assasination of the former prime minister. We had
decided to resume after some time, but we had to postpone a couple of times
due to dedicating most of our columns to the turmoil that was created after
the assasination. We resumed publication last week.
This means that we have not published more than 15 articles that were sent
by Ms. Gemma. I have mentioned the fact that we have discontinued the
publication of the articles temporarily a number of times.
Regarding the invoices, I would like to tell you that Aztag WILL pay all of
them (even for the articles we haven't published yet) and there is NO
intention whatsoever to disrespect the author or Sant Jordi. Believe me,
even if there were such an intention, I wouldn't hesitate a second and pay
the invoices myself. Our friends-- and we do consider Sant Jordi a friend of
our newspaper/publishing house/cultural organization-- are the most valuable
thing we have; we would not allow that friendship to be compromised for any
reason whatsoever.
Again, I apologize to Sant Jordi and Ms. Gemma for any misunderstanding and
for all the delay. Unfortunately, since I was away from the country a number
of times in the past months and our staff is small and overstretched, these
problems arose.
Regarding O Zahir, I spoke to the publishing House's director and we will
set a publication date soon. I have not finished translating the book yet,
but I thing I will have it ready in the next couple of months.

Thank you for your comments, and Monica's. Actually we thought that the bow
picture is more full of meanings than the Kazakhstan one. Coelho's fixed
look, his hand gesture, his attitude, the expression on his face, the fact
that he's aiming at one target are quite relevant to the Zahir. This picture
holds many feelings, a mental decisive attitude, and much more. All of these
were going inside of the author in his wonderings and quest for his wife.
As to the publication date of the book, the proofreader told me that he's
doing his best to get done with the final part as fast as possible. i need
to check with our Press manager to see when he might be able to submit the
blue print then start printing.
Yesterday i went to Virgin, and i felt kind of a little shrink at heart when
i saw the French edition. I hoped to have the Arabic edition displayed by
this week as expected...but not to worry....everybody is waiting for the
Arabic book to be out and i feel that it is going to hit good sales rates
once on the market. This 's what counts after all.
As to the press, 5 leading lebanese newspapers has been notified. I'll be
informing you when they will talk about the book.

as well as their colour ad which has already appeared in The Guardian, the Times and the

I would now like to go over a few points regarding the launch:

Apologies for being this late in sending you over the translation of the
web. It's ok though...launching the book is a priority at the moment. That's
why i'm closely following up with the proffreader to make sure that the book
is fully free of mistakes, no matter how little.
Im looking forward to recieve the DVD and the HC UK cine campaign and the
rest of the materials.
As to the FTP interview, we'll surely make use of it after the launching of
the book.
The promotional kit that was sent to the newspapers include: a translation
of the Press release originally made by Flammarion, our back cover text, the
Genesis in Arabic, the definition of the Zahir according to us added to it
the definition of the verb from which the word Zahir derives, two pics of
Coelho, an Excerpt about freedom from the 1st chapter of the book. 5
newspapers have received all this and we summoned them all to publish the
excerpt instead of the 1st chapter since we couldn't book any space. The
Parlimentary Elections made room for nothing actually, but politics.
I haven't received the article by Christina Lamb yet. I'd love to have it.
In the An-nahar article i've sent you, they say that Coelho based Esther
character on Lamb's.
The poster of the Zahir is already out. It will be distributed soon to the

Of course the book was published, on May 22nd as we declared. we had all the
preview ads and teaser in the internet portal. and as I sent you before a
scan of one list in which the book is already on the 7th place and in
another on the 6th!
We are all preparing for the book fair, I will keep you posted with the
progress on the lists and send you samples.
We don't have reveiws yet but the book sellers accepted the book very well
and we are sure it will show in the sales.

I am writing to you to tell you that The Zahir in English has just started its journey, beginning in
the Uk and India and will travel to South Africa and America and finally to Australia over the next
few months.
I also wanted to to let you know that Paulo Coelho will be the guest on a CNN programme
today called "Business International" The writer will be talking to Becky Anderson about O
Zahir.This will be broadcast on CNN
International today at 11.00 GMT. The programme will be repeated throughout the day on the
news.
The author was at the Oxford Union on Tuesday (http://www.oxford-union.org/last) answering
questions from a large group of university students which was a huge success. Yesterday he
was at the Front Line Club, the war correspondents club in London at an event hosted by Emily
Buchanan, the award winning journalist and BBC broadcaster, for the official launch. The guests
include journalists, influential members of the Front line Club and a selection of booksellers.
We will of course keep you all posted with all interesting information that we receive. There is a
DVD on its way to you with the HC UK cinema campaign as well as their colour ad which has
already appeared in The Guardian and will be in this weekend's Times and Telegraph.

Hemos estado viendo el estado de los trabajos de la web de El Zahir y,
tal como comentamos en nuestra conversación del viernes por la tarde, te
confirmo que hemos podido anticipar el calendario inicial. Así, una primera
versión de la página estará operativa este mismo jueves (día 9). En los
siguientes días, los contenidos se irán ampliando y, en paralelo,
actualizando. Marcela os tendrá al corriente de la labor. Estoy copiando,
asimismo, a Ricardo Sabanes para que, en su caso, haga las correspondientes
llamadas a la web desde cada una de las páginas locales de las editoriales
americanas.
Lamento, además de los malentendidos, la situación creada, aunque
estoy convencido de que el éxito final de la novela nos hará contemplar en

Te escribo para informarte que "El Zahir" en inglés acaba de despegar en Inglaterra y la India, y
pronto viajará a Sudáfrica y a los Estados Unidos en los próximos meses.
Una entrevista de Paulo en la CNN en español se emitió ayer en el telediario de las 9 (horario
Europeo) y se repetirá varias veces en los espacios de noticias a lo largo del día. Es un
importante apoyo para la edición en español, ya que la televisión de pago en América está muy
extendida. La entrevista en la CNN en inglés se emitirá hoy.
Paulo Coelho estará también en la CNN Internacional hoy a las 11 horas (Londres, UK) como
invitado al programa "Bussiness International". El escritor conversará con Becky Anderson
sobre su nuevo libro "El Zahir".
El pasado martes, el autor estuvo en la Oxford Union (http://www.oxford-union.org)
respondiendo a las preguntas de un grupo numeroso de estudiantes universitarios, acto que
fue un gran éxito. Ayer miércoles, estuvo en el Front Line Club, el club de corresponsales de
guerra de Londres, en un acto conducido por Emily Buchanan, la galardonada periodista y
presentadora de la BBC, para el lanzamiento oficial del libro. Los invitados incluyeron

continguts, properament pujarem el joc a la intro, les descàrregues
(audiocapítol, fons d'escriptori i e-cards) i a principis de juliol el
vídeo en versió comprimida per internet. El vídeo no el volem divulgar
abans que als llibreters.
D'altra banda, ens agradaria tenir una salutació del Paulo especial pels
seus lectors d'Espanya. Idealment en audio, o si no, escrita. Si creieu que
no és possible tenir-ho, treurem el botó de la web.

Espero que tot vagi bé.
Em poso en contacte amb tú per un tema del que ens agradaria saber la teva opinió.
El fet és que una psicòloga de Colombia, Gloria H., ha acusat a en Paulo de plagi. Diu que l'hi
ha copiat un text, concretament una columna que vam publicar a El Espectador (Colomiba)
recentment i que de fet, recull un text del que en Paulo afirma que no és l'autor encara que li
encantaria.
Aquesta dona, suposo que per promocionar-se a ella i a la seva columna que es publica a un
diari regional, ha començat a publicar articles i fer declaracions dient que el Paulo la còpia. A
més, ara també ha començat a concedir entrevistes on diu que no anirà als Tribunals (encara
que té està segura de que guanyaria) però que té el dret de dir-ho. Afegeix que l'Alquimista és
un plagi de'n Borges i diu que en Paulo "copia todo lo que puede".
Et passo els links on veuràs tot això que t'explico, amés de la columna per a la teva referència.
La notícia ha arribat fins i tot a Noruega.
El que tenim ganes de fer nosaltres és demandar-la a ella per injúries, però ens agradaria molt
sentir la teva opinió.

transmitir nuestra rabia ante esta situación. Una acción judicial siempre trae mucho ruido y no
suele ir bien para ninguna de las partes.

Si he pedido a Francesc y Gabriel que nos trasladen toda la información
sobre GH y expongan el marco jurídico en el que se inscribiría la acción
(evaluación riesgos en caso de juicio) si la contraparte lo planteara
-afirma que no ahora pero en su nota también se desprende que ha pasado del
agradecimiento a Paulo a la crítica pública del incidente desde su visión-.

Después de 48 horas y de recibir la inquietud por parte vuestra solicitando
nuestra sensibilidad jurídica sobre el asunto de referencia permíteme
corroborar la nota de Gabriel, de Carlos y de Francesc al respecto: creo
oportuno practicar la templanza y la serenidad esperando que los medios
dejen de hacerse eco de la noticia.
Nuestra visión del tema:
Te adjunto una breve y acelerada nota elaborada por nuestro abogado de
confianza en Colombia en el que verás que,
Afirmación de la señora Gloria Huertas
Según la legislación Colombiana, cualquier causa legal que pretenda la
señora Gloria Huertas con respecto a la nota del Espectador debe efectuarse
- Ante el Juez Civil del domicilio del demandado (lo que complica efectuar
el proceso para una persona desde Cali por un hecho de hace más de un año),
- Ya existe un reconocimiento público que efectivamente Paulo no es el
autor (aclarando el origen del contenido de la columna publicada) lo que
diluye uno de los elementos clave para dar sustancia a la eventual causa,
- El resarcimiento económico por daños y perjuicios es poco interesante
tras capitalizar la notoriedad mediática (si habláramos de un premio con
una importante dotación económica la situación podría adquirir una
relevancia distinta).
Creo importante reiterar la indicación de Gabriel de no haber recibido
hasta hoy eco en los medios colombianos hacia Planeta al respecto.
Todo lo anterior, hasta el momento, debe inscribirse en una comunicación
pública donde GH ha indicado su voluntad de no instar una acción legal al
respecto.
Concluyo coincidiendo con lo indicado en e-mails recientes por mis
compañeros del proyecto en Colombia y en España en el sentido de esperar
que el tema se diluya en breve.
Afirmación sobre posible plagio a Borges
La complejidad en instar una causa en un entorno en que,
- La afirmación no es de GH sino de un tercero (lo que hace perder la
credibilidad a la misma),
- El tiempo que el órgano judicial toma en estos casos (más de un año y
hasta siete años),
- La complejidad que el órgano competente en este caso debería ser un
fiscal en Cali (eco mediático siempre favorable al demandado por ser menos
popular),
junto con la experiencia en algún caso poco gratificante desde el punto de
vista judicial en demandas por injuria y calumnia (una vez ya probada la
inexistencia de plagio) que hemos experimentado desde el Grupo Planeta y no
se ha fallado a nuestro favor, nos hace recomendar también en este caso
esperar a la dilución de la noticia.

Espero la pronta solución del tema quedando a vuestra disposición en la
medida que creais conveniente otro curso de acción según se sucedan los
acontecimientos, debiendo en este caso someterlo previamente a

Afirmación de la señora Gloria Huertas sobre el plagio presentado:
Revisado el tema en cuestión, haciendo la respectiva aclaración sobre la premura del
tiempo, me permito precisar que:
Una acción por plagio se encuentra encaminada a reivindicar la paternidad sobre una
obra artística, literaria o científica, en la cual un tercero manifiesta públicamente ser el
autor, usurpando los derechos que al verdadero autor le corresponden.
De acuerdo a la ley colombiana vigente sobre la materia, la protección del derecho de
autor se encuentra encaminada al resarcimiento de los respectivos daños y perjuicios, en
la cual el titular de dicha acción (autor) debe probar efectivamente: 1. la paternidad de la
obra y 2. La existencia de un tercero que afirma ser el autor (plagiario).
De acuerdo a lo anterior es competente el Juez Civil del domicilio del demandado y el
proceso se tramita a través de una acción verbal de única instancia.
Como opinión personal sobre el manejo dado por la Agente del autor, efectivamente se
aclara que el texto original no es de autoría de Paulo Coelho, con lo que se está
reconociendo públicamente que efectivamente el no es el autor, lo que significa una
aclaración al contenido de la columna publicada por Coelho, tal y como se puede leer en
la comunicación enviada al diario El País y el Espectador, con lo que se eliminaría uno
de los elementos para configurarse el plagio.
Afirmación sobre posibles plagios a Borges en la obra El Alquimista:
Respecto a esta afirmación, la acción pertinente sería la de formular la respectiva
denuncia penal por injuria y calumnia, acción penal conforme a la cual la carga de la
prueba corresponde al denunciante.
En virtud de que la afirmación no es de ella sino de un tercero, del cual no se conoce su
nombre, como primera medida debería determinarse efectivamente quien es la persona
que hace dicha afirmación.
En este orden de ideas el funcionario competente es un fiscal de la ciudad de Cali.

Estem a punt de treure una edició de butxaca del títol de referència, però m’he adonat que el
contracte que vam signar al gener 2003 per aquesta obra no preveu aquesta modalitat d’edició.
Confio que això no serà un problema i que no tindreu inconvenient a enviar-me una addenda (o
un contracte, si ho preferiu) que prevegui aquest tipus d’edició, amb un royalty del 10% com
estem fent habitualment. Digue’m també quants exemplars hem d’enviar (5 i 5, com per les
primeres edicions?)

desvetllar què un dels escenaris és Kazahistan a fora del llibre (de la contracuberta). LLavors,
em sembla que és en el punt de llibre, posaria alguna cosa com "l'estepa de l'Àsia Central" o
alguna cosa així.

I am writing to you to tell you that The Zahir in English has just started its journey, beginning in
the Uk and India and will travel to South Africa and America and finally to Australia over the next
few months.
I also wanted to to let you know that Paulo Coelho will be the guest on a CNN programme
today called "Business International" The writer will be talking to Becky Anderson about O
Zahir.This will be broadcast on CNN
International today at 11.00 GMT. The programme will be repeated throughout the day on the
news.
The author was at the Oxford Union on Tuesday (http://www.oxford-union.org/last) answering
questions from a large group of university students which was a huge success. Yesterday he
was at the Front Line Club, the war correspondents club in London at an event hosted by Emily
Buchanan, the award winning journalist and BBC broadcaster, for the official launch. The guests
include journalists, influential members of the Front line Club and a selection of booksellers.
We will of course keep you all posted with all interesting information that we receive. There is a
DVD on its way to you with the HC UK cinema campaign as well as their colour ad which has
already appeared in The Guardian and will be in this weekend's Times and Telegraph, as well
as the video interview with Paulo.

pronto viajará a Sudáfrica y a los Estados Unidos en los próximos meses.
Una entrevista de Paulo en la CNN en español se emitió ayer en el telediario de las 9 (horario
Europeo) y se repetirá varias veces en los espacios de noticias a lo largo del día. Es un
importante apoyo para la edición en español, ya que la televisión de pago en América está muy
extendida. La entrevista en la CNN en inglés se emitirá hoy.
Paulo Coelho estará también en la CNN Internacional hoy a las 11 horas (Londres, UK) como
invitado al programa "Bussiness International". El escritor conversará con Becky Anderson
sobre su nuevo libro "El Zahir".
El pasado martes, el autor estuvo en la Oxford Union (http://www.oxford-union.org)
respondiendo a las preguntas de un grupo numeroso de estudiantes universitarios, acto que
fue un gran éxito. Ayer miércoles, estuvo en el Front Line Club, el club de corresponsales de
guerra de Londres, en un acto conducido por Emily Buchanan, la galardonada periodista y
presentadora de la BBC, para el lanzamiento oficial del libro. Los invitados incluyeron
periodistas influyentes miembros del Front Line Club y una selección de libreros.
Por supuesto, os mantendremos informados con toda la información interesante que vayamos

de los dos periódicos. Mi opinión es que el asunto no trascenderá más. Eso
espero. No veo cómo podría la señora esta ir más allá de lo que ya hizo. Si

Espero que todo vaya bien.
El lanzamiento de "El Zahir" ha sido fantástico en toda AL, en Colombia insuperable. Estamos
muy contentas y esperemos que el libro se mantenga número 1 durante mucho tiempo.
Te contacto porque supongo que sabrás que Gloria H., una psicóloga que publica una columna
en un diario regional de Colombia, ha acusado a Paulo de plagio a causa de una columna,
Cerrar un ciclo. Lo cierto es que Paulo recoge su texto, pero dice claramente que no es suyo,
que no sabe de quién es y que le gusta. Te incluyo la columna para que puedas verla.
A pesar de esto, esta mujer sigue dando que hablar, incluso ha concedido una entrevista a
Semana, donde dice que no va a ir a los tribunales (no tiene ninguna posibilidad), pero que
tiene derecho a decirlo. Pensamos que lo que quiere es precisamente promocionarse a ella y a
su columna. En un punto insinúa que El Alquimista es un plagio de Borges y que Paulo suele
plagiar.
Lo que tenemos ganas de hacer ahora es demandarla a ella por injurias, pero nos gustaría
saber tu opinión.

Pensamos que lo que quiere es precisamente promocionarse a ella y a su columna. En un
punto insinúa que El Alquimista es un plagio de Borges y que Paulo suele plagiar.
Además, la noticia se ha publicado fuera de Colombia: en Chile, México, e incluso en Noruega!!

Ahora, nos ha surgido una pequeña duda. Tenemos la impresión de que es posible que este
texto no sea de esta mujer, puede ser de Carlos Castaneda. Esto nos lo ha dicho algún lector,
pero yo no he podido chequearlo. Jesús Badenes le ha dicho a Mônica que tu probablemente
conozcas a algún entendido de la obra de este autor para poder hacer una averiguación.
Lamento darte tanto trabajo añadido al lanzamiento!

Gracias por tu mensaje. No te preocupes, porque este incidente no afecta
para nada nuestro trabajo relacionado con el lanzamiento y las ventas de El
zahir que, entre otras cosas, hemos podido constatar que sigue de primero
en librerías y grandes superficies. Eso es lo importante.
Con mucho gusto investigaré lo que pueda sobre lo que me comentas de
Castaneda, aunque me parecería un poco raro que la señora de Cali armara
este escándalo a sabiendas de que su texto no es de su autoría. En fin,
todo puede ocurrir.
Adjunto te envío una pequeña nota que salió ayer en un periódico de
Bucaramanga (Colombia). Lo interesante es que la señora reafirma (y explica
por qué) que no tiene intención de demandar y, además, aclara que lo de El
alquimista "son presunciones".

No puedo aguardar hasta el lunes para darles una gran noticia: apenas publicado, El Zahir ya
está primero en la lista de best-sellers de la revista "Ñ" del diario Clarín que se publica hoy, a
una semana de su lanzamiento !!!
La lista de best-sellers de hoy es la primera que se publica desde que apareció El Zahir. Es la
primera vez que un libro de Paulo llega al N° 1 en la semana de ser publicado, y es la primera
vez en casi un año que una novela desplaza de ese puesto a "El código Da Vinci" en este
mercado.
Ah, y las cuatro semanas de publicidad en vía pública, y las tres semanas de radio comienzan
el lunes próximo !!!

Los materiales son preciosos. Destacan mucho en el punto de venta y junto con el poster,
crean una mancha suave y elegante. Las fotos que he recibido está muy bien.

encantaría recibirla (puede ser por e-mail) para nuestros archivos. Ya veo que tienes datos
sobre ventas, ¿pero cómo se traducen en libros vendidos? ¿Cómo han acogido el libro la
prensa, los libreros, los lectores...? ¿Tienes ya alguna referencia? ¿Dónde sitúa a Paulo en
Argentina este lanzamiento?
En principio, Mônica va a estar la semana próxima. Sé que quería irse a Oslo, pero no sé las
fechas. Ya hablamos.

Es cierto, informar sólo porcentajes da la sensación de incompleto.
En la Argentina, el sell-in (colocación) fue de 64.500 ejs. aproximadamente. El
sell-out del 21,09% significa 13.603 ejs. vendidos en nueve días. Es muuuuucho,
muchísimo, ni siquiera Dan Brown en su mejor momento obtenía esa cifra de
sell-out.
La acogida del libro:
1. Los libreros lo han destacado en todos los puntos de venta. Algunos
escaparates son realmente fabulosos (yo, nunca los había visto asi, y llevo
tiempo en esto de vender libros de Paulo). Creo que la tarea de haber reunido a
alrededor de 400 libreros entre Buenos Aires, Córdoba y Rosario para el
pre-lanzamiento potenció el entusiasmo y el good-will del canal.
2. Los lectores se han volcado de manera masiva, básicamente en el canal
librerías (en supermercados va mas lento, este canal no se ha recuperado del
todo). Lo interesante es que en las librerías pequeñas, que han recibido una
menor dotación inicial de ejemplares, el sell-out es del 30%. Creo que se ha
logrado el efecto buscado;: producir un gran rush inicial hacia la compra del
libro, trepar al Nº 1 de inmediato (¿te acuerdas que esta era una de las
premisas para la Argentina?). Lo bueno es que el índice de sell-out se había
dado sin la publicidad en radio ni en vía pública, que se inició el lunes 06.06.
3. La prensa estuvo publicando noticias anticipadas, pastillas y hasta trivia
sobre Paulo y El Zahir desde unos 30 días antes del lanzamiento. Destacó la
prohibición del libro en Irán, y hasta la publicación de la noticia del robo del
camión con ejemplares de El Zahir ocupó lugares destacados. Otro dato que
destacó fue el del lanzamiento simultáneo en toda América. Como tanto Clarín
como La Nación habían fallado con la entrevista y el adelanto, la estrategia de
recurrir a más medios para publicar el reportaje, la génesis y otros textos de
Paulo sobre la novela fue más eficaz: en el interior del país, todos los medios
importantes publicaron adelantos de la novela, el reportaje y otros materiales,
y la cobertura fue mucho mayor, y también más cercana (al habitante de Córdoba
le impactó más leer el adelanto en La Voz del Interior, su diario, que en
Caras).
4. Con este lanzamiento, Paulo vuelve a situarse por encima, lejos, muy lejos,
de cualquier otro escritor, extranjero e incluso argentino. En términos
comparativos: 2,8 veces por encima de Dan Brown, o 6,7 veces por encima de
Bucay, que adelantó la salida de su novedad previendo que si no lo hacía
quedaría ahogado por el aluvión Coelho (y Planeta). En relación a este autor,
cuando se publicó su nuevo libro apareció en las listas de más vendidos ficción.
Al poco tiempo reapareció clasificado en no-ficción: su editor lo pidió, para
tener algo de aire, je je.
5. Y con este lanzamiento, yo, personalmente, estoy aterrizando después de un
año detrás de este zahir. Creo que de ahora en más algo cambiará: mi umbral de
satisfacción será de 7,9 veces el que tenía hace seis meses atrás, y seguirá en
aumento. Seré un problema para mis colegas (no debe haber nada más pesado que un
argentino al que le salen bien las cosas), y ni qué decir para nuestros
competidores. El problema que yo tendré es que mi asistente y secretaria, Paula,
que debutó conmigo con mi viaje a Tarbes y colaboró en todo el proceso hasta
ahora, puede llegar a creer que siempre será así, adrenalina pura, y se aburrirá
cuando lancemos el próximo JJ Benítez. En fin.

Una entrevista de Paulo en la CNN en español se emitió ayer en el telediario de las 9 (horario
Europeo) y se repetirá varias veces en los espacios de noticias a lo largo del día. Es un
importante apoyo para la edición en español, ya que la televisión de pago en América está muy
extendida. La entrevista en la CNN en inglés se emitirá hoy.
Paulo Coelho estará también en la CNN Internacional hoy a las 11 horas (Londres, UK) como
invitado al programa "Bussiness International". El escritor conversará con Becky Anderson
sobre su nuevo libro "El Zahir".
El pasado martes, el autor estuvo en la Oxford Union (http://www.oxford-union.org)
respondiendo a las preguntas de un grupo numeroso de estudiantes universitarios, acto que
fue un gran éxito. Ayer miércoles, estuvo en el Front Line Club, el club de corresponsales de
guerra de Londres, en un acto conducido por Emily Buchanan, la galardonada periodista y
presentadora de la BBC, para el lanzamiento oficial del libro. Los invitados incluyeron
periodistas influyentes miembros del Front Line Club y una selección de libreros.
Por supuesto, os mantendremos informados con toda la información interesante que vayamos
recibiendo.
Por otro lado, hace dos días os enviamos un DVD por correo que contiene el anuncio de cine
que forma parte de la campaña de Harper Collins UK, además de un anuncio a todo color que
apareció en The Guardian y que saldrá este fin de semana en Times y The Telegraph.

Les respondo algunas de sus preguntas.
1. Claro que les enviaré por courier en un mes más un dossier de prensa completo, espero con
originales y un CD con imágenes de la campaña para que vean lo linda que nos ha quedado.
2. Estamos en la lista de los más vendidos en tercer lugar mañana viernes en la Revista de
Libros de El Mercurio lo que es muy bueno considerando que estamos hace una semana en la
calle. Debiéramos subir al primero la próxima semana.
3. Pirateo no hemos detectado aún y en cuanto vea una copia, se los haré saber
inmediatamente.
4. Respecto a la apreciación de Paulo en Chile quiero hacerles el análisis desde 3 perspectivas
distintas.
Por el lado comercial, los libreros están frotándose las manos desde que les presentamos el
proyecto en el desayuno comercial porque saben que la suma la van a hacer este año con El
Zahir. Nos han facilitado más espacio que esperábamos en las vitrinas y las exhibiciones han
quedado de lujo porque, además de utilizar materiales especiales como autoadhesivos
(elementos no tradicionales en campañas de libros), les hicimos un gran favor al subcontratar
instalación para esos materiales gráficos (para asegurarnos su correcta colocación) evitándoles
el trabajo a ellos. Además nos hemos esforzado en matener informados a nuestros clientes por
email de la campaña (fotos, datos, curiosidades, noticias, etc...) Para que se hagan una idea,
hasta ayer una de las principales cadenas de librerías nos entregaba su propio ranking y El
Zahir va escapado como primer libro vendido casi en un 50% más que el que le sigue
inmediatamente.
5. Respecto a la lectoría, Paulo tiene un piso asegurado de lectores bien macanudo en nuestro
país, que se quisiera cualquier escritor incluso chileno y con el contenido de la novela, que a mi
juicio muy muy personal, es una de las mejores que he leído de él. Esperamos que micros,
metro, radios y otros canales de difusión sean el elemento multiplicador que lo convierta en un
libro que irá de boca en boca.
6. La tercera parte es la prensa. Y me detengo un poco porque es mi área y pasa algo muy
significativo con ellos. Los periodistas chilenos y los lectores también como debe pasarle en
todo el mundo, sienten a Paulo como alguien muy cercano. No es un escritor lejano como
Gabo. Sienten a Paulo como escritor local, latino, y por ende, casi exigen su presencia. Me ha
costado harto hacerles ver que no están contempladas ni giras ni más entrevistas. No
entienden esta distancia. Por eso que he sido tan majadera y hago mi mea culpa Patricia con
esto, con el tema de contactos de prensa o la visita de Paulo a Chile o videoconferencias o lo
que sea, porque echan de menos al Paulo cercano que vino a presentar un nuevo libro hace
algunos años en la Librería Feria del Libro de Providencia.
Ta vez, cuando los periodistas lean El Zahir van a entender por qué Paulo no vendrá a Chile.
Eso... Creo que están preparando un informe formal de la campaña en cada país, pero como
Patricia: me pediste una apreciación personal, te la doy sin problema.

En México, estamos sumamente emocionados por los resultados de El Zahir. Hemos logrado
colocar en el mercado más de 100,000 ejemplares. Si recuerdan, nunca antes habíamos salido
con un tiro así.
Nuestro mejor termómetro es Sanborns que tan solo en un fin de semana de exhibición ya
había alcanzado la cifra de 570 ejemplares vendidos.
¡¡La respuesta de todos nuestros clientes ha sido formidable!! Están muy contentos con la
edición del libro, con la campaña y con los materiales pues lucen en los puntos de venta.
El libro está exhibido en todas las librerías, las cadenas departamentales y los autoservicios del
país de forma preferente, estamos preparando unas fotos para que puedan ver las

Te escribo respecto a la entrevista de Paulo para Puerto Rico.
Ya que se trata de un pedido personal tuyo, Mônica habló con el autor quién está de acuerdo
con concederla. La tendríamos que organizar entre el 15 y el 22 de junio.
El único problema que veo para organizarla es que Carlos me decía que solo la podría hacerse
la llamada por la tarde (horario Puerto Rico), y esto no va a poder ser posible.
La hora ideal para el autor es hacia las 16:00 o 17:00 (hora Francia), unos 20 minutos máximo
de duración.
Si tu crees que es posible que nos adaptemos a esta propuesta, será un placer organizar la
entrevista.

El Martes de la semana próximo enviaremos por UPS un pequeño resumen, así
como un juego de materiales promocionales y las notas de prensa que habremos
recopilado hasta el Lunes.
Sobre Paulo qué puedo decirte...Cada lanzamiento me sorprende más.
La gente lo quiere mucho, le agradecen esas palabras de aliento que les
brinda en cada uno de sus libros. Cuando lean los correos de los lectores
podrán darse cuenta de la importancia que en la vida de cada uno de ellos
Paulo ha marcado. Va mucho más allá de las razones y se ubica en las
emociones.
En cuanto a los clientes, todos han hecho la gran apuesta del año con El
Zahir, los puntos de venta se ven hermosos con las exhibiciones que han
montado, con las pilas de libros que van bajando día a día. Están
satisfechos.
Sobre Centroamérica quisiera proponerles que retomemos el tema que había
quedado pendiente con la gira de Paulo, esas personas han sido bastante
apaleadas por las condiciones sociopolíticas y económicas de sus países y
están ávidas de tener una voz de fe y esperanza, Paulo puede dárselas.

Muchas gracias por tu correo. Siento la demora en la respuesta pero volví el
jueves pasado de RD con una gripe escandalosa y ayer, lunes, pude dar los
primeros pasos. Hoy tendré respuesta de Carlos y os agradezco de corazón
todo el interés pues nos ayudará enormemente.
El Zahir está el número uno, las ventas son estupendas y, al menos por lo
que he visto en RD, el Zahir domina con autoridad todos los puntos de venta,
la presencia es magnífica y los libreros comentan que están el línea, al
menos, con Once minutos. Tendremos, no obstante, información más precisa
pues Pilar está recabando datos para remitiros un informe de todo.
Eso es lo que os puedo comentar en esta mañana.

Hoy me reuní con la gente de Mediasat que esta en México y miramos este proyecto y que se
puede ofertar. Coincidimos un poco en que lo mejor es que el editor francés vea el proyecto
como suyo y para eso se les puede ofrecer un porcentaje del PVP.
La propuesta que ellos me hacen es que sea del orden del 2% y al igual que el autor tengan un
anticipo y luego liquidaciones de venta.
Esto permitirá que no lo vean como un proyecto de un tercero sino que como una extensión de
las ventas de ellos y faciliten las traducciones.
Te parece adecuado esta presentación para una editorial como Anne Carriere. ?
Si se hacen unos cálculos rápidos , son 10 títulos a 40.000 unidades por titulo y a un precio de
4 Euros estamos hablando que el 2% equivale a un ingreso de 32.000 Euros.
Es atractiva esta cantidad para un editor del tipo de Anne ?.
Te pido un poco tus comentarios para ver por donde seguimos avanzando.

Thanks for mail. I have handed over the manuscript to the Publisher of Gyan Bichitra several
months back and I enquired of him whether he has got the contract form and he told that he has
not received any mail from you. You may send the contract from in my address and I’ll
personally deliver it to him. Alternatively it may be sent by e.mail in my address and I’ll
download it and take to the Publisher. A few days back I met him to ask whether he is really
sincere in publishing the book and he has assured me that he will take it up in October2005 to
release it in Calcutta Book Fair which will be held in January 2006. I have also proposed to him
that I’ll bear the royalty to be paid to the original writer and that he may return\n the amount after
the publication of the book.

I am contacting you to plan the promotion of these launches. In general this can be applied to all
of the titles, and in my opinion it is important to take the following 2 groups into account:
- The Press
- The point of sale
I will provide you with as much material as possible that you could offer to the press in order to
prepare the launch.
In the case of The Zahir and Eleven Minutes, it is more completer than The Fifth Mountain, as
the launches are more sophisticated.
I will also be sending the press releases to you that we have written and some photos of Paulo,
if you want. As soon as you know the dates of the launch of The Zahir, I would be grateful if you
could let me know so that we can organize the marketing plan with plenty of time to spare.
It is really important to organize a good presentation to the press and to the book sellers, that
includes information about the author - (a biography, information about international sales, and
an advance extract of the book, a letter from the publisher, etc.)
As far as the point of sale is concerned, to obtain a good placement or position in the book
shops is essential, in order to gain the booksellers attention and that they become a subscriber
and that they recommend the books to their clients. To develop strategies for the bookseller is
important:
- Presentations of the new books to the booksellers, explaining the campaigns, the international
sales etc.
- Send the book as a present with a letter from the publisher.
To obtain space can be done in several different ways: with displays, some large, some small,
dedicated to the complete collection or just to the latest title. with posters announcing the
publication of the book, bookmarks, post cards as souvenirs for the readers. bags with the cover
of the book or the author's photo can be turned into ads that can be seen out
on the streets.
Some publishers make little notebooks with the book on the cover, calendars, key rings and
pens.
Finally, if we have a large budget, there is the possibility of planning ad campaigns, press ads,
radio, hanging ads on the streets (which has been done in Korea) publicity campaigns on
public transport - on buses etc or in stations and
on billboards... I have photos that I can send you for reference.
I will send you materials of "The Fifth Mountain" and "The Devil and Miss Prym", and I hope
that we can work on the marketing campaign in July and that before I go on holiday we can
finalize the details of the launch of

I am writing to you about the new addresses for Sophia. Mфnica has pointed
out to me that it is not in fact that simple.
The change in address means a change in the country, with different rules
and different laws. If we have a problem with the main market - which is
Russia, we will have a contract which has been signed in the Ukraine.
We are not sure about how we would be able to proceed in the case of a law
suit for example.
I understand that the agency address can change as we are paid from the UK.
Could you let us know why exactly the address has been changed ?

have all legal reasons for this, and the formal relationships between UK and
Russian Synopsis are clear, and let us do it.
I asked Yuriy to give the address which will make the whole contract legal.

your doubts, and will check with him today.

Enclosed please find the report from Sophia. It will show you the sales of O ZAHIR and
ELEVEN MINUTES from the week, when Sophia started to sell the books to the booksellers
(not to the readers!). The problem of this report is that they do not know how many copies were
really sold to the readers. It only shows the quantity of copies sold to the booksellers.
For ELEVEN MINUTES the figures are more close to reality, as the booksellers do not order the
stock, but only actual number of the copies. But for O ZAHIR they all tried to make a stock to
have a book in their warehouses.
Please let me know if you will need any comments from Yuriy to these figures.

Sorry. Here is the attachment. Please note that the problem with this report
is the same with the Russian one. It shows the number of copies sold from
Sophia to the booksellers, and the figures of the real sales to the readers
the publisher will receive much later.
It takes now so long to receive information from Sophia partly because there
is nobody in Moscow office, who is in charge of the whole thing. After Oleg
left, Uriy started to control everything themselves. He is in touch with me,
but still in the other city, and it makes the things slow.
Besides, Sophia do not make such reports for themselves, and it came out
that they do not have any other figures beside their sales to the
booksellers. These figures are important, but do not give an exact picture
of what is going on.
In case you find it useful, they can provide me with such information every
week.

The dossier was sent by the marketing manager from Sophia, who prepared the
whole thing. I told her, that you received the report safely.
I am glad you could see the campaign in general. It was really good, in
Moscow and St Petersburg, and in provinces. In provinces many booksellers
made their own small promotion campaigns to support their own sales, which
were also useful and good for the book.
As for Ukraine - I know exactly (as I heard from many people, and have seen
in internet) that the press coverage was very good. Enclosed you will find a
report from Ukrainian PR manager Irina Koval, who worked with media. I also
plan to visit Kiev maybe in a couple of weeks, to see how things are going
on and to see Irina. In the end of June "Veronica..." should be published in
Ukrainian and in July - "The devil and Miss Prym", and this is another
chance to get attention of Ukrainian media.
I'll see Uriy next week on Tuesday to discuss the questions you're asking
and other problems. He controls everything himself now, but he also travels
a lot (as he also have an office in St Petersburg), and things are going on
slow. But it's getting much better now, and hope we'll solve all the
problems with communication soon - he's getting much more familiar with the
whole thing.
I asked Helen check that the foreign versions of "THE ALCHEMIST" will be
deteted from Sophia's websites. But it does not mean these texts will not
appear somewhere else in Internet - our people do not use to clear author's
rights for such kind of publications, and you could find the texts of
Paulo's books on many websites. That does not mean that Sophia should behave
like this, of course.
I have a good news for you: "The Genesis..." (in it's latest version) was
published in a newspaper "Rossia". This is a weekly newspaper, and they've
publish the article on the 2nd-8th of June. You can take a look at the
publication on their website (www.rgz.ru), and we'll send you the original.
I asked Sophia marketing manager to get in touch with Radio Russia, and to
find out how things are going on with their readings and promotion of their
audio version . The readings are taking place - I heard them a couple of
times (just to be sure, that it's happening) and can say, that it's a
pleasure to listen to the actor. The novel seems different when you listen
to it, completely new.
I'll come back to you with more information regarding the audio project as
soon as possible. Did you have a chance to think about Ukrainian offer for

the sales of Eleven Minutes during the same period.

How are you? Here is your friend from the good old times writing to congratulate you on the
success of 'The Zahir'. Looking at the sales results for two months, I would say that it's been a
very good start. Long may it continue! For many more weeks. And you have every right to be
proud, for it would be impossible without you. Not because you are indispensable - none of us
are, we all come and go - but because for quite a few years now you've been the driving force
behind Paulo's success. Every big writer should have someone like you by their side, yet not
every big writer is so lucky. I've learned a lot from both of you, and this experience now helps
me in my own work.
Talking of which, you might have heard that I've just started a new publishing house called
'Otkryti Mir ('Open World) Publishers' aka OM Publishers. I didn't start from scratch, for I took
with me a few projects from Sophia, including the Bloomsbury book 'New Beginnings' - a
compilation of opening chapters from new novels by major contemporary writers. If you
remember, it was a charity project, with all proceeds going to tsunami relief fund.
We are now ready to publish this book. However, as far as I remember, there was a question of
whether the first chapter from 'The Zahir' could be included in the Russian edition of 'New
Beginnings'. So I just wanted to check if the situation has changed since then, seeing that
Paulo's book has already come out and is selling well.
I wouldn't think that if 'New Beginnings' featured a chapter from 'The Zahir', it would interfere
with the sales of Paulo's book. On the contrary, it should encourage readers of 'New
Beginnings' to go and buy the book they've already started reading and got hooked on.
Please let me know what you think for I would like to send 'New Beginnings'
to print quite soon.
Apart from that, I hope you are well and happy, and find enough time for little Gabriel. Kids grow
so quick! I'm talking from experience cos yesterday my daughter, who is seventeen, passed her
college exams. Come September, she will be a student of a PR and advertising college. So last
night we had a big party, and are now trying to think of her as a grown-up (although she'll
always be our baby!).

About your notes for our poster ,Im sorry but the 2 biggest bookshops

to use in their bookshops windows, this was the reason why we didnt changed

As far as the poster is concerned, we will leave this up to you. We think
that as Paulo is well-known, it is a good idea to work towards consolidating
and creating a "brand". A poster with a picture of the author is more
powerful. However, if you and the booksellers don't agree... I think that
you should do what you think is best.
I wanted to make the following 2 comments.
We have recently made the contracts for Veronika and The Pilgrimage. I would be grateful if
you
could get back to me about the date that you are planning to publish both
these titles, and I also wanted to remind you that we have to authorize the
covers and the back cover text.
The other point I wanted to go over is the representation of Veronika in the
theatre. According to the information that we have the, the play is being

I'm sorry for not replying you on time - I've been working so hard to prepare the launch of O
Zahir that had almost no time to sit down and write a message.
Although we have changed the launch date, our marketing plan will be the same.
As I have informed you the daily 24 Hours will publish the general interview and the Genesis of
O Zahir, besides the 1st channel of Georgian radio dedicated a program to the launch of the
Book which was broadcasted last week.
We plan to present the book in the cafe Paulo tomorrow evening.
All the journalists are invited and I hope that this will be one of the best presentations we ever
had.
On one of the TV channels there will be a quiz about Paulo's works, three times a next week.
Different questions every time.
Unfortunately we will not be able to broadcast the interview at the moment, but I'll try to organize
it later, nor make the internet campaign (in Georgia it is meaningless), but we will include the
information about the book on our site.
I have contacted the literary magazine suggesting to make a small gift booklet about O Zahir for
their readers, but unfortunately could not persuade them.
Instead they suggested that they will publish one of Paulo's novels in the magazine and give us
a possibility to publish the ads in the biggest weekly newspaper with the circulation 80 000
copies. In fact it is the same cross-promotional campaign.

- Date of publication: VERY IMPORTANT! 15th July does not seem like an appropriate date for
us. July is a holiday month, no publishing house launches during the holidays. Our suggestion is
that the launch should be at the end of August or at the beginning of September.
I would be grateful if you could tell me the initial print run as well as the retail price.
Slogan: fantastic! We are agree with your suggestions for the cover. Please, go ahead!
Choosing a slogan is important and it should be added to all promotional materials, like posters
or ads.
Pre publication info: ads in bookstores; fantastic! Remember that we need approve all materials
before printing.
Could you confirm which newspaper or magazine will be publishing the first chapter? Will it be
published as an editorial piece or as a teaser? It is important that the media mentions the

Interview:
As already mentioned, the general interview has been recorded as a professional video. The
quality is wonderful as it has been recorded by a professional TV cameraman, and it has
scenes of Paulo at his computer, at home by the fire place and practising archery. It is 17' 49"
long.
In the recording, Paulo is giving the answers in Portuguese and all you will have to do is insert
the translation of the questions in Latvian and add the Latvian subtitles. We think it will be great
for people to listen to Paulo in his mother-tongue, Portuguese. As Paulo didn't read out the
answers but answered spontaneously, the answers are slightly different from the ones he gave
in the written interview, but they are almost the same.
Our idea is that you can use it in different ways:
- Planeta in Spain is editing a special DVD with images from Kazakhstan, and an outline of the
book with Paulo's interview. The whole video takes around 7 minutes and it will be sent as a
special teaser package to booksellers including the book and a leaflet with the history sales of
Coelho's books in Spain. The DVD will also be sent to a selection of journalists. They are
evaluating to give it to readers who buy the book on the publication date in one major book shop
in Madrid (special promotion agreement with this shop).
- Bompiani in Italy has produced a video using this interview and they broadcast it at the sales
representative conference.
- It can be broadcast on TV.
- Place part of it in the special The Zahir mini-site.
Once you have seen the interview, if you are interested in broadcasting it on TV, please let us
know and we will give you the contact details of the producer of the recording, so that you can
order him a copy of the interview in the system required by the TV channel. This video has been
shown on TV in Russian and Bulgaria.

thank you for your feed-back. I would not fully agree with your comments
concerning the July as the vacation month - the situation is slightly
different here in Latvia where people go on vacations in various times as we
do not have very warm weather all through summer. In fact, the most
problematic period for general booksellers is the second part of August and
beginning of Septemeber, when most of customers' spendings go to educational
publishers and distributors of other school products. But I will discuss
this matter once more not only with my marketing people but also with some
of biggest booksellers, and will come back to you next week when also

Actually we would like the cover to be more pink than orange as such cover
will be better visible in the bookshops. I hope you will agree to that.

We agree to change the poster and include the photo of the author. It is a
great idea. You are right to see the face of the author is really important
to the readers. We liked the Flammarion design of the poster and I believe

I am happy to inform you that The Zahir is No.2 on bestsellers list published today in Jutarnji list.
We'll see whether the book will make No. 1 next week.
We are waiting to see today the TV show "Half an Hour on culture". We hope it will be No.2
there as well.
We are satisfied with the way the books are displayed at the bookstores and we are sure their
position will be even best after the today's top list in Bestseller issue of "Jutarnji list". The
booksellers here were all waiting for the book to be published. They all have big posters and our
sale representatives informed me that most of the booksellers have put the posters in their

I just had a meeting with Evenimentul Zilei who plan to have a column of famous authors every
day of the week.
They are considering at first a six months contract for weekly columns of each author and would
like to start as of the 20th of June. I told them that a column costs between 50 and 100 USD, to
allow room for negotiation.
I offered them of course Coelho.
The extent of the column they are looking at is of 2000/2500 signs, but should the column
be longer it could be published in 2 or 3 parts.

Evenimentuil zilei will publish a presentation article re. the publication
of Paulo's columns and they need the following informaiton urgently as the
article is planned for Sunday, a sort of history of Paulo's column writing:
1. since when is Paulo publishing the columns in O Globo
2. if there is every day, or every week a column by Paulo
3. general information of O Globo - is it h biggest daily inbrazia,
circulation woudl be great
4. if tehre is anything else important and sensational relatred to O Globo
and Paulo publishing his columns there, reactions to his on-going column

you please provide a text, as of whom is present in the photos, if there is
a sort of "story" of the photos. When was he in Afgansistan?

cover of O Zahir, information about his success in Romania and
internationally.

hope that you will receive it in a few days and I would be grateful if you could let me know when

Regarding the book, we hope this launch will make Paulo even stronger in Macedonia and
increase the sales. With each launch we need to consolidate and increase the readership.

Regarding the publication date, September is fine for us, and we will co-ordinate the launch with
the Serbian edition, even though their exact launch date has not been fixed.
For this launch, we believe it is necessary to secure a strong campaign to raise awareness for
the book at the moment of publication. Most of the campaigns presented to us so far work in
this direction of getting total coverage of the market at the moment of publication.
When the book enters the bestsellers lists, it is very important to spread this news to highlight
the achieved success among booksellers and readers.
I would like to share some ideas with you, which complement the ideas that I have already sent
to you :

Choosing a slogan is important and it should be added to all materials, like billboards and press
ads.
Publicity and press work:
Paulo is not considering granting many interviews for the launch of O Zahir. It is for this reason
that Paulo has assembled and is providing some material to cover the needs of the press. The
idea is not to concentrate all these materials in one media, but to get spaces in the different
media, aiming at different target readers.I will provide you with the following materials.
Interview:
The author has made a general interview about this title to be distributed in all countries, similar
to the one for Eleven Minutes, and you may arrange its publication in a newspaper, a bookstore
catalogue or in another media.
This interview has also been recorded as a video. The quality is wonderful as it has been
recorded by a professional TV cameraman, and it has inserts of images of Paulo at his
computer, at home by the fire place and practising archery. It is 17' 49" long.
In the recording, Paulo is giving the answers in Portuguese and all you will have to do is insert
the translation of the questions in Macedonian and add the Macedonian subtitles. We think it
will be great for people to listen to Paulo in his mother-tongue, Portuguese. As Paulo didn't read
out the answers but answered spontaneously, the answers are slightly different from the ones
he gave in the written interview, but they are almost the same.
Our idea is that you can use it in different ways:
- Planeta in Spain is editing a special DVD with images from Kazakhstan, and an outline of the
book with Paulo's interview. The whole video takes around 7 minutes and it will be sent as a
special teaser package to booksellers including the book and a leaflet with the history sales of
Coelho's books in Spain. The DVD will also be sent to a selection of journalists. They are
evaluating to give it to readers who buy the book on the publication date in one major book shop
in Madrid (special promotion agreement with this shop).
- Bompiani in Italy has produced a video using this interview and they broadcast it at the sales
representative conference.
- It can be broadcast on TV.
- Place part of it in the special The Zahir mini-site.
I am sending you a copy of the video by post.
Once you have seen the interview, if you are interested in broadcasting it on TV, please let us
know and we will give you the contact details of the producer of the recording, so that you can
order him a copy of the interview in the system required by the TV channel. This video has been
shown on TV in Russian and Bulgaria.
Genesis of O Zahir:
Paulo has written a two-page article for the Brazilian magazine "Isto É" describing his feelings
about the publication of O Zahir 4 days before the launch of the book. I really like the article; the
repercussions this piece had in Brazil were enormous. I am forwarding it to you for publication in
the next e-mails.
The first chapter of O Zahir as a booklet or as an editorial piece: The booklet or the first chapter
should be published some days before the launch to capture the readers' attention. Would it be
possible negotiate an announcement on the cover of the magazine?
The teaser has to be negotiated or an exchange with some media; we don't want Tri to spend
money on this, we would prefer you to invest it on radio commercials or adverts instead.
For your reference, in France, 3 weeks before the publication, the first chapter and interview will
be serialized and diffused in partnership with the most widely read French weekly magazine,
FEMINA, which has a circulation
of 4,2 million nationwide and a readership of over 9 million people.
The article from Sunday Times:
This was written by Christina Lamb, a war correspondent, published in the Sunday Times some
weeks ago which made front cover on the News Review. It would be great to be able get this
article published in Macedonia as it would be fantastic support for the O Zahir launch. I strongly
recommend reading it. In the next e-mail, you will find the article and the weblink
with the article. The rights obviously, belong to The Sunday Times. We have heard that it is
being circulated via the news agencies.
Online:
It would be important that you plan a promotional campaign and adverts for Internet. A mini-site
dedicated to the book, for instance, and the insertion of banners in the main sites of Macedonia.

appreciate it if you could have a look at them.

Apart from the website and banners, we think it would be great to buy an alert to subscribers of
news/cultural newsletters of one of the major platforms. For instance, Terra online which is
aimed at the Spanish-speaking community has a list of more than 500,000 subscribers in Spain.
We have heard this kind of promotion is very effective because it reaches the
audience that is interested in books and the percentage of people reading
the newsletter is really high.
An individual campaign with the book chains and booksellers:
Occupying space at the point of sales is essential: you can produce special materials such as a
display, posters, bookmarks, bags, postcards. Do souvenirs for readers work in Macedonia?
You could also plan to do an individual advertising campaign with the book chains or prominent
bookstores, as well as outdoor and indoor decoration and catalogues.
I will now send you in various mails with materials that have been created by other publishers
which have worked extremely well at the POS. I will send these with explanations which you
may find interesting.
Advertising campaign:
My proposal is that you consider advertisements in magazines/newspapers and especially radio
ads. I will send one colour ad from Harper Collins UK, which has already appeared in The
Guardian and will be in this weekend's Times and Telegraph
Radio:
The radio promotion is very good. I don't know how radio works in Macedonia, but in any case,
I would like to share some ideas with you.
In France and Spain radio is extraordinary for book promotion. The publishing houses in both
countries have devised a very strong radio campaign. Let me give you more details about the
Spanish one. On the same day of the launch they will have 18 mentions in different formats:
commercial breaks (spots), sponsorship, and live mentions. They will reach agreements with
different radio stations, so that there are direct mentions made by the presenters of the most
popular programmes. They of course pay to the stations for it as for the spots, however, since
the stations don't agree to this kind of promotion more than a few times a year, it creates an
additional impact. Since the format is spontaneous, it is usually always
longer than the spot. It will be the first time that live mentions promotion is carried out for Paulo's
books. However, even without having checked the results, I believe maybe this is a good idea to
share with you.
In Poland the book was read on the radio, and there was also a Paulo Coelho evening
organized.
Finally, there is another idea I would like you to consider that may work for O Zahir. You could
send a copy of the book to some personalities besides the media before publication in order to
get quotes. Can you please let me know your thoughts?
I will also send you photographs for the press, of the author for the promotion, as well as some
materials for the book itself.
I will send you the Portuguese and the English version of the book, which I am not sure if you
have had the opportunity to read yet but I look forward to hearing your opinion.

considered your proposals for the promotion of the book and we assure you that in cooperation
with our associates A1 television and Vreme newspaper it will be properly introduced. In the
meantime we will work out our strategy and provide you with the detailed marketing plan.

of the book so could you please send us as soon as possible the English hardcopy version. We
