AUCTIONS INCLUDING CONTEMPORARY GLASS.

04/10/14: Charity Auction in support of the International Summer Academy Bild-Werk Frauenau!

Since its inception over 25 years ago, the International Summer Academy Bild-Werk Frauenau has developed into a globally recognized centre of excellence. With its focus on glass it is unique in the

German summer school landscape. At the interface between a regional glassmaking tradition and

International Studio Glass movement Bild-Werk has become a central forum where the interrelated traditions of glass craftsmanship and the innovation potential of modern glass art is alive and evolving. In order to allow this to continue successfully there will be a charity auction on October 4 th.

2014. As nice as the success story of Bild-Werk Frauenau there are also the ever pressing budget problems, despite many volunteer work hours. Therefore, about one hundred internationally renowned artists, mostly teachers from the Academy, have spontaneously donated works of art for a charity auction in support of the school. These diverse artworks reflect the world of studio glass and its numerous connections reflected in the visual arts, and the connections of Frauenau from all over the world. From all continents and from 15 countries, the objects have been sent, and the organizers are happy that they travel - have survived - often from halfway around the world. The picturesque imagery and spontaneous expressiveness seen in the work of Erwin Eisch, one of the founding fathers of Bild-Werk, illustrate the versatile material of glass, which, combined with other media of expression in fine art is reflected in the diverse auction pieces. Whether regional or international all together they make Bild-Werk Frauenau and open up a wide range for our auction: paintings, prints, sculpture and of course glass - flat or sculptural, hot or cold, transparent and coloured, all ranging from the pictorial, to the poetic, from calm to furious and always brilliant.

Hot from the furnace and the flame: Many objects are very touching, like the piece of B. Jane Cowie, the Au stralian artists who for years has worked at the furnace in Singapore and who’s piece “Memory

Touchstone” has installed glass travel memories in an old suitcases. Or they show colour and joie de vivre as seen in the assemblage of furnace and lamp-worked glass of two Mexican brothers Einar and

Jamex de la Torre. The doyen of the American studio glass are represented by Stephen Dee

Edwards, successor to the legendary Studio Glass founder Harvey K. Littleton at the Albert University in Wisconsin, which will be blown this summer at the new studio of Bild-werk. Or Shane Fero, longtime President of the International Glass Art Society, with a lamp-blown bird piece. The long-term relationships with Bohemia are also represented, among others by the artist at the blo wpipe Jiří

Suhajek.

Warm glass: The exciting and versatile British studio glass scene dominated this year's Coburg Glass

Prize and this is also the case with our auction with artists Max Jacquard, Mark Angus, Sue

Woolhouse and Davina Kirkpatrick represented. As in Coburg they also demonstrate in Frauenau the current trend in the studio glass towards "warm glass", for delicate Pate de Verre and kiln cast sculptures as seen in the glass object chosen as the title piece of the auction, the of kiln cast glass with enamel inclusions work "Measure for Measure, 2013" by Marion Mack and Max Jacquard (winner of the British Glass Biennial 2008).

Cold glass: engraving and painting: Glass engraving in all of its picturesque variations shows in the

Graal technique vase e ngraved by Pavlina Čambalová, a shooting star of the young glass scene currently working for Lobmeyr, Vienna. Poetically, the Lithophanie of Jaroslava Votrubová shows in diaphanous light. The great play of light and form in ground glass shows, among other things, in the large glass plates of regional artists Fanz Xaver Höller and Eduard Deubzer. The region is further represented at an international level by the Ark builder Ronald Fischer, and by G. Jo. Hruschka,

Stefan Stangl, - these three from the studio “Männerhaut”, - and by engraver Christian Schmidt.

The internationality and the creative diversity of Bild-Werk is also found for example in the vases series from the legendary exhibition "50 Artists 50 Vases", a collaboration with the Eisch factory.

Written large in Bild-Werk Frauenau has always been the connections to other media of the visual arts. Wonderful auction pieces from the fields of painting and graphic arts, wood and ceramics all reflect the spirit of Bild-Werk, a fruitful enriching combination in all art directions, representing the full scope of the academy. A detailed auction catalog will be published in late August, both as a pdf download as well as in a printed version, and which will be sent upon request. The auction will be conducted by Dr. Joachim Haas, from the Art Society Schweinfurt, and held in the Academy building

Tom's Hall in Frauenau. Written bids and bidding by telephone are both possible. Details of the auction can be found in the near future under Website: www.bild-werk-frauenau.de

Closing Date For Applications 06/10/14: The Stephen Procter Fellowship 2015 is now open for proposals. The upcoming Fellowship will be awarded to an artist based in Australia. The Stephen

Procter Fellow 2015 will receive AU$5,000.00 towards travel, and a 4 to 6 week residency at The

Australian National University, in the School Of Art Glass Workshop.

About The Stephen Procter Fellowship: The Stephen Procter Fellowship was established in 2001 in memory of Stephen Procter, Head of the Glass Workshop at The Australian National University 1993 –

2000. The aim of the Fellowship is to assist Australian and international artists working in glass to work/study abroad. Travel and the experience of other cultures were very important to Stephen and this Fellowship is intended to be a significant and exciting link between glass communities around the world. Each year the Fellowship provides AU$5,00000 towards travel and a residency (4 to 8 weeks) within the glass workshop at A.N.U. to an artist working with glass. The fellowship aims to support

artists with working or educational opportunities significant to their artistic practice. In 2015 this money will be made available for an artist based in Australia to travel overseas and undertake a residency in the Glass Workshop at the Australian National University in Canberra upon their return. The fellowship needs to start in 2015, and ideally be completed the same year. See the application instructions for further details, Website: http://soa.anu.edu.au/glass/stephen-procterfellowship/outline-2015

Deadline 01/12/14: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., a leading publisher of art reference, decorative art, and design books, is calling for images for ‘Art Glass Today 2’. We are looking for beautiful, professional quality photography of the art glass you have created in any style or works by artists you represent, as well as interesting, engaging information about you or your artists for potential inclusion in this new publication. All materials submitted will be reviewed. Those artists chosen will receive a letter of acceptance listing their pieces that will be featured in the book.

Schiffer Publishing takes pride in these books. For the artists involved, it is like a juried show in permanent, published form that will be available for years to come and available globally. The book’s listing of artist contact information and gallery locations are an e xcellent way to expand an artist’s or gallery’s patron base.

Unlike most juried shows, submission and inclusion in this book are absolutely FREE! An artist’s only cost for participation is a little time, creative writing, and professional-level photography . A gallery’s involvement would be to encourage their artists to participate. Contributing artists are credited on the page with the photo caption information, the introductory information about themselves, as well as in the listings providing their contact information and gallery and museum locations where their work is on exhibit.

In order to help keep the publishing house’s overhead low and avoid charging a submission fee as some publishers do, Schiffer Publishing does not provide complimentary copies of the book to contributing artists. However, every participant is offered an initial 40% discount should they wish to purchase copies of this book or any of our 5200 titles.

Our website has a complete listing of our titles in print. Interested in participating? Contact me for more information and a submission form. We are extending our submission deadline for all materials to December 1, 2014 in accommodate more submissions. If you have already submitted materials, please, do not resend your submission and thank you for your patience. Sincerely, Carey Massimini.

Class sessions run 27 August – 4 September and 9 – 16 September. Making art works in relation to place is the focus of the North Lands Creative Glass Conference and Master Classes 2014; acknowledging how artists and their work connect to their surroundings, landscape, architecture, history and social context. We see more interactive public art, more artists responding to and working with communities. Artists are making works that respond to weather, nature or urban environments, to political discourse and social situations. It seems that some artists and public demand less autonomous disconnected sculpture favouring instead a more connected vision. We ask questions about what it means to experience remoteness, how this and being in a place away from home affect an artist’s work. What influences the particularities of a landscape can have and what it means to

collaborate with artists in close proximity, to work intensively with no distractions and to embrace or reject the surroundings. What can happen when we go beyond our familiar studio environment and step outside into a bigger picture? What does it mean to be a glass specialist in this place, at this time? More details for the Classes and Conference programme will be announced shortly.

Annual Symposium. 4 th.

– 6 th.

September 2014. Capital Hotel, Edinburgh. Capital Hotel is close to airport, trains and bus routes within easy access to city centre. 2014 will be a big year for Scotland with the independence vote and the Commonwealth Games taking place. In addition it is the year of “Homecoming” where families and friends reunite in their “home” country, (natural or adopted) to share that special bond and hospitality that Scotland is so well known for. The B.S.S.G. Symposium is planned to reflect this and opens its doors to all with a passion for glass. Primarily for scientific glassblowers the event will also include something for everyone, from artistic flame workers to those looking for the latest in glass working equipment. Practical demonstrations will be included in the programme. The B.S.S.G. extend a warm welcome to all and look forward to see you soon. Further details contact: Ian Pearson, B.S.S.G.

 03/10/14: ‘Blackfoot Pathways: Sculpture In The Wild International Sculpture Symposium’.

September 15 th.

- October 3 rd.

2014. Lincoln , Montana. US.

Artists: Steven Siegel (US), Jorn Ronnau (DK), Alan Counihan (IRL), Jaakko Pernu (SF) & Kevin

O'Dwyer (IRL). Lincoln (MT), a community nestled in the Blackfoot Valley of Montana, has been the center of rich, often times conflicting, social, cultural and environmental values. Mining, logging and ranching has been the key economic factors that have sustained the community throughout its history. As the logging and mining industries have subsided over the past 25 years the community finds itself at a crossroads in both economic and cultural development. Reflecting on its history and looking towards the future, the community has chosen contemporary art practice to act as both a creative and economic catalyst. The proposed sculpture symposium will bring internationally respected symposium artists Steven Siegel, Jorn Ronnau, Jaakko Pernu, Alan Counihan, Brandon

Ballengee and Kevin O’Dwyer on site to engage with it’s landscape, exploring it’s historical, environmental and industrial history, through contemporary art practice. This engagement will:

Place artists and art at the center of planning, execution and activity.

Provide community engagement through hands-on participation and education thus encouraging creative expression.

Create a community identity and a “sense of place”.

Promote Lincoln as an “art destination” providing cultural and economic development.

Provide long term opportunities for economic and cultural agencies to invest in the community.

Provide the framework for the development of a vibrant artist community thus improving the quality of life in rural Montana.

Encourage social, cultural and economic vibrancy in the Blackfoot Valley. Additional information and updates at Website: www.facebook.com/pages/Sculpture-in-the-Wild/443462522429266

The 6 th.

International Symposium of Engraved Gl ass will be held in Kamenický Šenov, Czech

Republic from September 15 to September 21, 2014. Tradition of triennal symposiums was interrupted in 2011 due to uncertain situation of Glass School that has been essential partner of the symposiums since 1996. Thanks to consolidation of situation at the School and support of town

Kamenický Šenov the 6 th.

year of the symposium will be again a meeting of glass engravers, artists, students, experts and enthusiasts. The Association of the Symposium of Engraved Glass decided to continue in organising the Symposium as a triennal event with connection to other international glass events. The organising committee also decided to frame the symposium primarily as a workshop concentrated on engraving work and presentations of smaller community of engravers. More space for social events and informal meeting of participants, guests, visitors and experts will take a place during weekend September 20 – 21. 21 engravers will participate in the Symposium this year. 7 from

Czech Republic, 7 from abroad and 7 students from Czech and foreign schools. Working part of the

Symposium will be realised at Glass School workshops. Invited engravers are admitted to bring also one finished work that will be exhibited together with work executed during the Symposium. Exhibition will be opened on Saturday 20. Works donated to the Museum will become part of permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Along with the exhibition of new works the Museum will present works of previous Symposiums from Museum´s collection in a special exhibition opened on the same day. From September 22 to September 24 the Symposium will be followed by optional workshop

13/ 10/14. ‘Glassac14’ is the most recent in a series of international conferences on glass science in art and conservation. It is to be held at the University of Durham from 10 th.

to 13 th.

September 2014, with the final day being a visit to York Minster and its famous mediaeval glazing.

The core of the conference is a three day programme of oral presentations (40 of them!) including contributions from five eminent Keynote Speakers. Full details may be found on the conference

Website: www.glassac14.sgt.org

. The major objective of this conference is to promote interaction and discussion between people from all specialisms within the arena of glass interest. When artists meet scientists, conservators meet contemporary glass artists, and business executives meet art historians you can rely on fascinating and creative discussions taking place! The rich variety of topics on offer is designed to encourage such fertile interactions. To this end we have devised the "ePoster" concept, replacing the traditional cardboard panels with much more accessible electronic equivalents - full details are on the web page at Website: www.glassac14.sgt.org/ePosters.htm

> . We'd like to invite you most warmly to come as a delegate to this conference and participate to the full. Early bookings enjoy discounted fees!"

“States Of Illumination” - Light & The Illumination Of Ideas. Press Release.

The 17 th.

Ausglass Biennial Conference will be held from February 12 th.

to 15 th.

, 2015 in Adelaide,

South Australia. It will include lectures, discussions, exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations.

Presenters from both Australia and across the world will offer an array of aesthetic, technical and personal reflections upon contemporary glass.

Adelaide, the state capital has long been a centre of contemporary glass in Australia. Artists and craftspeople are attracted to the glass studies courses at the University Of South Australia and The

JamFactory Contemporary Craft & Design Centre, located adjacently in the city centre. Adelaide is a city of more than one million residents nestled between white sand beaches and the Mt. Lofty

Ranges. It has an international airport serviced by many airlines. The conference venue is a short distance from the Art Gallery Of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, Tandanya Aboriginal

Visual Arts Centre, leading restaurants and public transport hubs. The Adelaide area is highly regarded for local wines and its proximity to the wineries of the Southern Vales and the Barossa

Valley. It is also the direct gateway to the Flinders Ranges National Park, Uluru [Ayers Rock], Alice

Springs and the outback. With such a diverse landscape & culturally enriched population we look forward to welcoming Artists, Makers & Craft Practitioners from the global glass community to share our passion of glass by bridging the gap through creativity. Verity Jasmin Burley, Ausglass President.

As in previous years, glass-makers, collectors, students and indeed anyone with an interest in the creation of studio glass is invited to join Just Glass to hear some of the country’s most innovative glass artists share their skills and experiences of breaking boundaries by combining glass with a range of other materials. Anna Dickinson will talk about how she incorporates metal with glass, exploring the use of cast and blown pieces, while Shirley Eccles will reveal her approach to using found objects in wood, metal or stone with glass. Making works that explore the power of myth, Emma Woffenden will discuss how she uses a variety of materials combined with glass to create challenging sculptures and installations. Dan Klein Memorial Fund: North Lands Creative Glass expands with new workshop and accommodation. North Lands Creative Glass, o ne of the world’s most prestigious centres for the study and development of glass as an art form is expanding both physically and creatively with financial support from the Dan Klein Memorial Fund, Wm Grant & Sons Charitable Trust and

Highlands & Islands Partnership Programme. The new workshop and purpose built residential accommodation at North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster will not only widen the scope of the techniques taught at the Alastair Pilkington Studio but also develop North Lands’ range of activities.

Our current programme is described in the Website: www.northlandsglass.com

. The new workshop, designed by Michael Roper, Chartered Architect, from East Lothian and local architect, Karlyn

Sutherland, is bright and spacious with natural light providing clean working space for artists to draw, develop ideas, photograph work and hold seminars, while the new lodge will increase the accommodation currently provided in the School House which together with the adjacent grounds were leased from the Highland Council. Now that they have been purchased with the generous support of Creative Scotland, North Lands can enjoy the long term security needed to improve and develop the building and land. The capital project stems from a development project funded through

Highland LEADER 2007-2013, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, aimed at building economic, environmental and creative sustainability for the organisation.

The £60,000 donated to the fund set up in memory of Dan Klein, who along with Robert Maclennan, the then MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, instigated the establishment of North Lands

Creative Glass in 1995 contributed to the cost of the new workshop which was officially opened on 4

April by Alan J. Poole, Dan’s Partner. Lord Maclennan recorded his appreciation and that of the Board of North Lands for all Dan had done for North Lands in establishing it as one of Europe’s principal centres of excellence in glass making attracting both internationally acclaimed artists as master class leaders and students from all parts of the world. In recognition of Dan’s great contribution to North

Lands he renamed the School House which accommodates class leaders and artists in residence

“Dan Klein House”. 2016 marks the 20 th.

anniversary of North Lands’ first Master Class led by Bertil

Vallien, when North Lands plans to mount a retrospective exhibition of works from its significant

Collection of Contemporary Glass, donated by masters and artists in residence over the past twenty years, in collaboration with Dovecot Studio in Edinburgh. It is also hoped to tour the exhibition to other venues in the UK and abroad.

The Board of North Lands is deeply grateful to all Dan’s friends, associates and colleagues within the great glass community, who contributed so generously to his Memorial Fund and feels sure that Dan would have been happy to see the splendid new work shop and to know that School House now bears his name. The Board of North Lands is also grateful to the Friends of North Lands for contributing to the cost of equipping the residence and for their continuing financial support for master class students who require additional funding to enable them to attend the classes. Further information is available on the NLCG website on how to become a Friend for anyone who would like to contribute to the North Lands’ Students’ Fund. Grace MacBeath. North Lands Creative Glass.
