APPLICATION FOR TITLE III EQUIPMENT MINI-GRANT
Name Irene Bittrick__________________________Date January 17, 2005
Faculty Rank __________________Department Alcohol and Drug Studies
Courses you plan to enhance technologically: Community Prevention ADST 410,
Suicide Prevention ADST 496, Substance Abuse Prevention Methods ADST 496. In
Fact the Substance Abuse Prevention Methods Class curriculum has been
developed on PowerPoint. Instructors who teach the Psychology of Addiction
ADST 304, a Survey Alcohol/Drug Problems ADST 300 have also requested a
projector to enhance their teaching methods with PowerPoint.
Describe the equipment requested (include cost estimate): Projector for
displaying PowerPoint programs and slides.
EPSON 740C Advertised Price: $2,299.00 + cables, taxes, extended warranties,
$2,800.00 to $2,900.00.
Explain how the equipment will enhance student learning in the course, and
describe your assessment plans. (How will you know that students are learning
more effectively?).
PowerPoint slides illustrate the important points students need to remember.
Seeing important points of a topic visually displayed and hearing the content
at the same time enhances learning. Complex issues can be displayed slide by
slide in an organized and systematic way. PowerPoint presentations allow the
instructors to pause and invite students reaction to the materials one slide
at a time. This type of classroom teaching promotes interactive learning,
which is the most effective learning approach to day.
Compared with lecture style methodologies that can be assisted by overheads
the PowerPoint teaching method is far more effective. It holds students
attention, particularly in evening classes, when students may not be at their
most alert state of mind. In addition students can obtain copies of the
slides where they can make notes.
Students will also be able to use the PowerPoint equipment in order to
present their mid-term in-class presentations.
In order to determine that students are learning more effectively with the
PowerPoint approach, students will:
(a) be asked to specifically comment at their end of class evaluations as the
effectiveness of PowerPoint;
(b) given quizzes on the PowerPoint materials presented; this will let the
instructors know how well the complexities have been mastered.
Explain how you and your students will use the equipment.
The instructor(s) will use the equipment as a teaching guide in their
classes. Specifically, the ADST Substance Abuse Prevention Methods Class
Curriculum has been designed using PowerPoint needing a projector. Students
have the option to use the projector for their in-class mid-term
presentations.
This equipment will also allow the instructor(s) to guide students directly
to the Internet for up-to-date/current research on specific subjects
Other instructors who teach the ADST 304 Psychology of Addiction Class and
the ADST 301 Survey Alcohol/Drug Prevention Class have also requested a
projector for their classes.
As can be gleaned from this brief application, there is a great need for a
projector in this program office.
Describe how, in addition to using the equipment, you will be pursuing your
interest in incorporating technology in teaching (including Title III
Workshops, consultation with the Title III Instructional Designer, the Title
III Peer Mentor Program, and title III Brown Bags).
Technology has become an important and integral part our every day life and
the dissemination of knowledge. It is therefore important for instructors and
faculty to keep pace with technology and apply these tools in the classroom.
The instructor(s) who will be using the projector are dedicated to
incorporate technology into their classroom, such as using PowerPoint in
their lecture materials with the goal of enhancing interactive learning.
The instructors plan to use Blackboard as their next step to introduce
technology even further into the classroom.
