Module 1 Activities The following activities are to be sent to your tutor for assessment. 1. Identify a general definition of psychology. 2. Describe the difference between a hypothesis and a theory: Illustrate what you mean with an example. 3. Define sports psychology. 4. Describe the difference between a laboratory experiment and a correlation – use examples to illustrate you point. 5. Design your own experiment: include the IV and DV and the hypothesis. 6. What does ‘p’ stand for? 7. What does the term statistical significance mean? Explain this using your own example. 8. Identify and describe the dependent variable (DV) using your own example – do not give an example from the research included in this resource. 9. Explain the difference between the correlational method and the experimental method. 10. Explain what is meant by the experimental and control groups giving an example of each. 11. Describe and explain the meaning of the word condition as used in an experiment. 12. Design your own longitudinal study. Do not include the example provided here. 13. Design your own cross-sectional study. Do not include the example provided here. 14. Draw a negative correlation, include the variables that you are measuring. Plot the markers onto a scatter-graph. Ensure they are marked accurately. 15. Explain what is meant by the word variable when used in a correlation. 16. Describe in your own words sport psychology. Also give examples of the kind of things that sport psychologists do. a) What are ethics? b) Give an example of the main things that the bps require in psychological research. (Write the answer in your own words.) 17. Design an experiment that might reveal something interesting about your chosen sport. 1) Include your theory. 2) And your hypothesis that you wish to test. 3) You should include the IV, (including the experimental condition and control condition). 4) As well as the DV. Write down below in your own words a 1) negative and a 2) positive correlation in sport or psychology. Use your own examples. 19. Write down in your own words what a ‘representative sample’ means. Provide an example to illustrate your point. 20. Design a variation of the Schwartz and Barsky (1977) Indirect observation in sport study. Write down your answer on a separate sheet. a) Design a questionnaire to test various psychological qualities that could be affected by home advantage. Please do not give the questionnaire to other people to complete but b) Try to ensure that the questionnaire is ethical in relation to the bps guidelines. 21. Describe a cross-sectional research study that you could conduct in sport psychology. You should use a different sport from that described in this resource and you should write your answer in your own words. 22. Describe (in your own words) a research study included in this module. Your answer should include a) the name(s) involved in the research and the date of the research, b) a description in your own words of what the research involved the method and procedure of the research, c) the results/findings of the research, d) theoretical or other implications of the results. 23. Describe two methodological problems that have been highlighted concerning research carried out in sports psychology. Explain why these things were considered problems or issues.
