ECRR EUROPEAN COMMITTEE ON RADIATION RISK COMITE EUROPEEN SUR LE RISQUE DE L'IRRADIATION AVENUE DE LA FAUCONNIERE 73 B1170 BRUXELLES, BELGIUM www.euradcom.org With the collaboration of: The Department of Environment, University of the Aegean International Conference 5th and 6th May 2009 Molyvos (Mithymna) Island of Lesvos, Greece Criticisms and Developments in the Assessment of Radiation Risk. 1ST Announcement and call for papers The conference will be held over two days on the beautiful Greek Island of Lesvos, famous as birthplace of the poet Sappho. The subject of the conference will be to critically examine the current radiation risk models epitomised by the recent reports of the International Commission of Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the US BEIR VII Committee. Contributions and recorded discussions will be peer-reviewed and collected into a volume of Proceedings which will be published. There will be an attendance limit of 50 scientists. Those 12 who are chosen by the organising committee to present original work will have their attendance and travel expenses paid. All those attending will be met at the airport at Mytilene and transported to the conference accommodation. Flights to Mytilene Airport, Lesvos are regular from Athens and may easily be booked from most international airports. The 2003 Report of the ECRR has now been translated into Russian, French, Spanish and Japanese. It has been reprinted three times and widely read; it is increasingly influencing radiation risk assessment by national government agencies and has been criticised by many official organisations including the French IRSN. It is widely conceded now that the current radiation risk models are strictly invalid when applied to internal chronic exposures, and perhaps for other situations, yet little has been done officially to address this situation. Meanwhile, increasing numbers of peer-reviewed papers and expert testimonies draw attention to failures of the model, e.g. in connection with Chernobyl or in connection with Uranium weapons. It is the purpose of this conference to attempt to address this problem, to update the ECRR2003 model using more recent data, and to highlight evidence of significant errors in the current ICRP model. It is expected that many eminent international scientists working in the areas of radiation epidemiology and radiation biology will attend. Currently we expect scientists and experts from Russia, Belarus, Japan, Germany, France, USA, Canada, UK, Sweden, Norway and India. This is an event that should not be missed by those engaged in or concerned about this issue. It is the third largest of the islands in Greece after Crete and Evia. Virtually unaffected by the mass tourism that has turned other islands into amusement parks, Lesvos is the perfect place to visit for people who want to experience the real Greece. When Orpheus incurred the wrath of the god Dionysus he was dismembered by the Maenads and his head and his lyre found their way to Lesbos. In classical times Theophrastus, the father of botany, succeeded Aristotle as the head of the Lyceum. Aristotle and Epicurus lived there for some time, and it is there that Aristotle began systematic zoological investigations. Olive grove near Molyvos. Church near Molyvos Molyvos or Mithymna, as it was called during the Middle Ages, is built of stone houses and shops which surround the castle and follow the coast to one of the most beautiful harbours in Greece. The medieval castle was built by the Byzantines and renovated by the Gattelusis, who were from Genoa and were ceded the island when Francesco Gattelusi married the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor John Paliologos. The original castle which this one replaced, was conquered by none other then Achilles during the Trojan War. There are still ancient ruins scattered around the town including impressive polygonal walls and a few giant holes where archaeologists have begun their slow work. The poets praised the excellent wine of Mithymna (Virgil, Georgics, II, 90; Ovid, Ars Amatoria, I, 57; Horace, Satire II, 8, 50; Odes, I, 17, 21). Methymna was also the birthplace of the legendary poet Arion. Medieval castle at Molyvos. Harbour at Molyvos. Mytilene Town.
