Lesson 1a: Logging On/Off, File Servers, Locations for AutoCAD drawings, finding
course material
1. Objectives: at the end of this lesson the user should know how to:
log on/off an ECC computer running a Microsoft Windows,
use the ECC server and file system,
where to store AutoCAD drawing files and
where to find course material.
2. Logging on / off ECC computers.
In this course you will use AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Both packages are available on ECC computers but not on general UT computer
clusters elsewhere on campus.
To log onto and ECC computer you must used your * engineering computer ID
This is different than your university computer ID which is referred to as your
* utad id
Important points:
1. This semester you will be asked to enter computer IDs in three
separate systems:
* Engineering College Computing – works in 3 engineering buildings
* UTAD – UT Authentication Domain (was Active Directory),works
all over campus except in engineering
* Web Assisted – DL – same id as UTAD
2. Read the * motd (message of the day on the desktop) for any important
news
3. Always * log off before leaving
otherwise another person can read all your mail, delete your work
and use all your print quota.

3. Servers and Files
2. Double clicking on My Computer
shows the available storage devices
in the My Computer window
3. Users can only store
data on C: temporarily in
User and Temp folders.
All data is purged from C:
at log off
But data on C: is
unaffected by network
slow downs
4. Flash drives are
excellent for saving work
5. Save all drawings in a
mime1100 folder created
on your user network
drive
1. If screen is covered with open
windows, placing cursor in the
bottom area of the screen and right
clicking brings up window which
allows Show the Desktop to be
selected and all open windows are
then minimized
4. Where to find course material
Use a browser to access * utoledo.edu/dl

and the Schedule content page
is shown.
2. Select information
desired
5. Summary
The student should now know the answers to the following questions.

What are the 3 computer accounts and their differences?
* ECC – works only in engineering labs
* UTAD – works across campus
* Web assisted / DL same account id and password as UTAD

What is the motd and why is it important? * message of the day, gives important
news

Why should you always log off before leaving? * So another user does not delete my
files, read my mail or use my print quota

What is the differences in disks on an ECC computer?
* C: used for temporary storage of user files in User and Temp folders and are fastest
and unaffected by network traffic
* Flash drive used for backup or second copy of drawings and other user files
* Network (U:) used for permanent user file storage
