AREA COORDINATOR/RESIDENCE LIFE POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Residence Life Office requires the Graduate Assistant Area Coordinator (AC) to live on
campus. In addition to the AC opportunity, this position allows for an additional assistantship in the
Office of Residence Life.
BAKER UNIVERSITY
The Baker University main campus, College of Arts and Sciences is home to approximately 900 fulltime students. Founded in 1858, Baker continues to have a rich tradition as a private, liberal arts

AREA COORDINATOR (60% of time)
The Area Coordinator assignment is a 10 month live-in position with responsibility for overall
administration and operation of residential facilities housing approximately 400 students.
Responsibilities
 Supervise, train, and evaluate undergraduate Residence Life staff
 Facilitate SN280 RA Development class
 Facilitate programming based on the residence life programming model
 Oversee administrative processes (i.e., opening/closing procedures, room changes, facilities
management, programming budgets and occupancy reports)
 Serve as student conduct adjudicator in residence hall disciplinary matters
 Assist with various campus programs/committees
 Participate in an on-call administrative duty schedule
 Promote ethical and moral development in the context of community based living
 Advise students in conflict resolution and personal issues
 Participate in the decision making processes in Residence Life operations
 Handle crisis situations and make referrals to impact student safety, satisfaction and
retention
 Serve as a member of the Community Council, acting as a liaison between Residence Life,
Maintenance, and Campus Safety to communicate facility and campus concerns
 Serve as facilities manager
 Attend Residence Life Staff Meetings, Retreats, and Training
RESIDENCE LIFE (40% of time)
The Residence Life collateral assignment is a 10 month position with responsibilities in the
administrative functions of the Office of Residence Life
Responsibilities
 Work with Student Affairs Coordinator on aspects of the Residence Life process (including
assignments, apartment applications, housing lottery, room changes, and etc.)
 Manage the conduct for three living areas (Gessner or Irwin Hall, New Living Center, and
Horn/Markham Apartment Complex)
 Work 15 hours per week in the Office of Residence Life/Office of Student Affairs
 Serve on the Baker Outreach Network, a student retention committee
 Attend Student Affairs Staff meetings, retreat, and/or orientation
 Serve on Student Affairs Staff and handle other assigned duties
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree with prior undergraduate Residence Life or other experience that demonstrates
leadership and active involvement in student life. It is also required that the Graduate Assistant be
enrolled at University of Kansas in the Higher Education Administration master’s degree program.
COMPENSATION
Salary of $13,750 total (divided over 10 months and paid monthly), $4,000 of tuition reimbursement
($2,000 per semester in October and March with completed paperwork), and benefits that include:
furnished apartment, Sodexo meal plan, cable TV, phone hookup, Internet, laundry, and computer
(in Office of Student Affairs). There is leave support for professional development.
