A Wedding Invitation
Announcing the marriage of Peleus and Thetis! They are destined to become the
parents of Achilles, greatest of the Greek warriors who fought at Troy.
Salvēte, o di deaeque! Noster amicus Pēleus magna consilia habet;
Hello, oh gods and goddesses! Our friend Peleus has great plans;
nympham Thetidem in matrimonium ducet. (in matrimonium duco = marry)
he will lead the nymph Thetis into marriage. (he will marry the nymph Thetis)
Vos igitur ā mē, Iove, ad Thessaliam vocāmini.
All of you, therefore, are being called by me, Jove, to Thessaly.
Exspectāte bonos ludos et dulcēs epulās.
Expect good games and sweet banquets.
Debētis autem dē his periculis monēri:
All of you ought, however, to be warned about these dangers:
I. Quoniam Pēleus mortālis est,
Since Peleus is mortal,
animus eius terrēbitur // si nimis potentēs vidēbimur;
his spirit will be terrified if we appear too powerful;
II. Qui audet sine dono venire ā mē castigābitur.
He who dares to come without a gift will be punished by me.
Legite genera donorum //quae laudābuntur ab omnibus //qui ea vidēbunt.
Choose the types of gifts that will be praised by all who (will) see them.

Tu sola, o dea Discordia, non vocāris, nam ā nullo amāris.
You alone, oh goddess Discordia, you are not called (invited), for you are loved by
no one.
Si veniēs, omnis deus in Olympo irā movēbitur.
If you come, every god on Olympus will be moved by anger,rage.
Inter amicos discordia non dēbet tolerāri.
Among friends discord should not be tolerated.
Poenae dabuntur ab eo deo qui suum officium negleget. Valēte!
Punishment will be paid by that god who neglects his duty. Good-bye
That god who neglects his duty will be punished.
