1. Building Momentum event at Tim Horton’s Field on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 3:30 – 9 p.m. Cindy Stout
reported on this fundraiser for the neighbourhood hubs which is a massive block party based out of the stadium.
Booths will be set up for different organizations. Free tickets to first 1000 for community BBQ, 3:30 – 6:30 pm. 10
free tickets to the adult party, 6:30 – 9 pm (licensed event). City of Hamilton website has more info. Crown Point
table to show off past, present, future of our neighbourhood hub. Need pictures of Crown Point in jpeg format,
email to Lyna Saad. Jody Medicoff, Brandon Power, and Bev Wagar volunteered to stand by Crown Point table.
2. McQuesten Urban Farm. Adam Watson reported on the Farm Project in McQuesten Neighbourhood’s Action
Plan. Pilot project with large size and scope. Hope to start a Farmers Market this summer with food coming out of
the Victory Garden. Children’s Gardening Camp—writing grants to get funding for these projects. Food education.
Greenhouse. Suggestion to rent out spaces in greenhouse. The plan is for one greenhouse to be a teaching
greenhouse, the other greenhouse to be a production greenhouse. The farm will have a windmill to power the
irrigation system. They plan to harvest rain water on the site.
3. 100in1 Day June 6, 2015. Workshop April 21st at the Perkins Centre, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.
4. Community Developer Corner (Lyna Saad)
a. Announcements: Conference on May 9 for parents, guardians of children with disabilities.

b. Hamilton Tool Library is handing out 25 complementary memberships to Crown Point. The tool library is
located on King and Stevens. Buy a yearly membership, take out tools. Kitchen, Garden, Construction &
Bike.
c.
NLI—Neighbourhood Leadership Institute needs someone from Crown Point on May 9, 12 – 12:15 pm
d. Bedbug Remediation, Needle pick-up training/supports available.
5. Administrative Update
a. Treasurer’s Report (Cindy Stout) Balance $5306.72
b. Small grant receipts received from Gage Park Pump Track event. Photography Show. Some small grant
recipients have not submitted receipts yet from their events.
c.
Ward 3 and 4 Sponsorship Funds Review Team of Matthew Green and Sam Merulla’s offer to Crown
Point Community Planning Team of $350 from each City Councillor. Nancy Reyes reported from the fund
disbursement team The money will be allocated to a petty cash—money and receipts. Can be used to
start up any new teams in Crown Point (ie. For a team that is not applying for a small grant), will be
discretionary (don’t need three quotes, etc.) Funds can be used for anything and can allow some teams
to grow. Receipts are kept and returned to councillors at end of year before new funds provided. Pilot
project for a year and then a review of how funds get used. Motion: Tammy Heidbuurt, 2nd: Brandon
Powers. Tony Lemma and Nancy Reyes will draft and submit a letter of request to the councillors.
d. Call for Crown Point Executive team member nominations: 3 positions to fill: co-chair, co-treasurer, cosecretary. Provide names of willing nominees to Lyna Saad by April 20, 2015 at midnight. The nominees
will be elected by vote at the May meeting. The vote for all nominees will be by paper ballot. Lyna
reported on 3 nominations received: Nancy Reyes, treasurer, Jayoti Edington, co-chair, Rosalind
Brenneman, secretary. Anyone who would like to submit a nomination must talk to Lyna or email her by
midnight tonight. Bio of nominees to be posted on Crown Point website & via email. The terms of
reference state that no proxy votes are accepted.
e. Alida van Dijk and Tony Lemma presented revisions made by the Terms of Reference review team which
met on. Discussion around changes made to vision, mission and values. The terms of reference will be
voted on to ratify at the May meeting without any changes at this time to the vision, mission and values. A
separate time will be set during a meeting to review Crown Point’s vision, mission and values.
f.
Sustainability Dialogue (volunteers, resources, finances) Tony, Cindy, Lyna, Tammy, Elizabeth, Bev,
Cynthia. This team has not met yet. Suggestion made to come to first meeting with background
information.
6. Small Grants
a. New small grant proposals. Fatima Mesquita presented idea about people doing things together, along
the lines of an Inside Out photography project in NY. Big posters. (Fatima Mesquita, Cynthia Lokker on
team to work on this idea.)
b. Small grants review team: Cindy Stout, Nancy Reyes, Kathryn Enders, Julie Gibson
c.
Small Grant Info Session (SPRC & HCF): Lyna reported on the changes made to small grants funding:
$2000 cap per year per hub on one time social events…like bbq or Easter egg hunt. Want to use the
grant money to seed new initiatives and new ideas that continue beyond a single event. Suggestion to tell

people about small grants application in The Point. Encourage more partnerships. Small grants from
SPRC cannot fund political advocacy work—can be used for education, but not for taking a stance.
7. Neighbourhood Action Grant Updates:
a. Andrew Hibma reported on New Hope Community Bikes—used grant funds to expand cargo bike rental
program. New Hope Community Bikes is the pioneer of cargo bikes in the city. They hope to buy more
cargo bikes and havereceived an additional $4500 from another source. Money has been allocated for
youth employment. NHCB is working with Bikes for Mikes. They hope to develop staff of high school
students to ride the bus with younger students to and from school. For the 100in1 Day on June 6 in the
evening there is a mass ride—a slow family ride cycling with police escort.
b. No report at this meeting from other Neighbourhood Action Grants: Compass Point Community Meal and
Pollinator Gardens on the Pipeline Trail.
8. Updates from Crown Point Neighbourhood Action Plan Teams (List of currently functioning action teams: B.
Pipeline, Clean Air, Coalition Against Pollution C. Theatre Group, Crown Point Youth Soccer, D. Kenilworth, E.
Branding/Logo, The Point)
a. A Review Team was formed to update Crown Point Neighbourhood Action Plan. Lyna & Jocelyn are
offering a guideline sheet and support as needed, would like to observe the review process in a hub as a
pilot project. Review Team members are Cynthia, Fatima, Kathryn, Jayoti, Tammy, Magdalena.
b. Action Item from Goal C: Theatre group update. Jody Medicoff reported that the group is meeting this
week for finalizing of sketches. It took from Feb 5 until last Thursday night for the topic of the death of
Jesse Clark (14 year old boy killed in Crown Point last year) to be raised in the group. The theatre group
is called Vocal Reality and functions with the goal to “create inner circle of bravery and enlarge it. A lot of
youth and children out there feel like they’re alone.” On June 20th there is an Art Extravaganza at Boys
and Girls Club. Donating art, selling of art as fundraiser. Donating baked goods for bake sale. There will
be a blank canvas for people to do fingerpainting. Plans for a community bbq in July / August. Date to be
announced.

i. The Point Newspaper & Communication Update (Nelly): Everyone is invited to the 1st Anniversary
celebration on Sunday April 26th, 5 – 8 p.m. at Hamilton Regional Indian Centre, 34 Ottawa St N.
ii. Crown Point branding / logo: Get your logo submissions in to contactthepoint@gmail.com by May
1st.
d. Crown Point Kenilworth Team –100in1 Day (Tony Lemma); Art (Susan Noakes) On Tuesday April 21st
there is a workshop for events that are happening on Kenilworth. To become involved or for any
questions please email tony.c.lemma@gmail.com or lsaad@sprc.hamilton.on.ca.
e. Action Items from Goal B
i. Jane’s Walks: May 2 & 3, 2015-- Volunteers are needed to support Jane’s Walk leaders, take
pictures, do head counts. Partnering with Doors Open Hamilton. Almost 30 Jane’s Walks this
year; see janeswalk.org for list of walks.
ii. Pipeline Trail team (Elizabeth Seidl) – Two Master Plan community consultations on Thursday
May 14th & June 25th, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Perkins Centre. Jane’s Walk: Bike ride on the trail to
Steam Museum on Sunday May 3rd, 1 p.m. meet behind Dairy Queen.

iii. Crown Point Garden Club (Pollinator Project): Planting on June 6, 2015 (100in1Day Event).
iv. Clean Air Action team: Kate Andrus was not present to report.
v. The Tree Project update: Anne Vallentin. Saturday April 25th – massive tree planting day in Crown
Point. Volunteers needed. Wed, April 22nd (Earth Day) tree planting training at A.M. Cunningham
School at 6:30 p.m. Arborist will be doing a demonstration of how to plant a tree. On Saturday, 35
trees will be distributed around neighbourhood in backyards. Great partnerships. Two teams of
volunteers: morning and afternoon. More info on CP website, under Projects, Trees Please.
9. Neighbourhood Campus Network Committee: Cynthia Lokker reported that there has been no meeting since the
last Crown Point meeting. Jayoti Edignton will be on this committee and will be attending the meeting this
Wednesday and Cynthia will be back-up.
10. Rebecca Doll updated about the Gage Park BBQ celebrating the Pan Am with Sherman & Crown Point Hubs,
Sunday June 28th, 2015 1-4 p.m. Funding of $2000 received from Pan-Am. Will start with a bike ride on Cannon.
Kenilworth start and Wentworth start and meet at Gage. Music/karaoke, soccer skills. Volunteer team: Anne
Vallentin, Rosalind Brenneman, Jesse Williamson, Mila Minic, Jesse Stuart, JR Marshall, Chris Parkinson.
11. CASTLE Project update (Rebecca Doll): Involved with Jane’s Walks, Walking group starting up at the Perkins
Centre, table at Pipeline Trail event. Rebecca described a project to find ways to get vision and dental coverage
back into OHIP. Research team set up to help with this project: Fatima Mesquita, Magdalena Wierzbicka , Lisa
Selman.
12. Crown Point Youth Soccer (Tim Brand): Soccer league for 4 – 7 year olds in Crown Point at Gage Park. Last year
10 teams and 135 kids. Registration has started, with 534 hits on CPYS Facebook page on first day of posting.
Put hold on receiving registrations because they have already received 110 registrations. CPYS is hoping to have
12 teams this year. $40 per kid for season June – August. Looking for team sponsors and volunteers to help
coach.
13. Announcements (Please note that we encourage you to post your own announcements on the Crown Point Hub

a. Tamarack Institute Conference—3 day conference in June at the Perkins Centre. Want to involve the
neighbourhoods, learn about neighbourhood action teams’ strategies
b. Nancy Reyes—The Louder than a Bomb Youth Poetry Event May 1st – 9th, 2015, spoken word, need
volunteers to be at workshops and laborers to set up a stage that is very heavy. Key performers: hoping
that Shad, new host of CBC’s q will be judge. (Jesse Williamson volunteers)
c.
Chris Parkinson– Sunday April 26th 11 a.m. is escarpment clean-up. Meet at bottom of Wentworth stairs,
bbq at Devil’s Punchbowl to follow.
d. Chris Parkinson/Rosalind Brenneman. Sunday May 17th, long weekend fireworks display at Gage Park
baseball diamonds. Bring your own sparklers and non-perishable food donation. Rain date is Monday.
e. Bev Wagar-May 17th Plant swap and sale. Swap between 12 – 1 p.m. at 114 Kensington Ave N, Bev’s
driveway.

Jesse Williamson—recruiting soccer coaches; partnered with FIFA Grassroots Soccer. Hold up to 500
kids. The weeks after the Pan-Am Games on Tim Horton’s Field. Free coaches training in Grassroots
Soccer model. Downplay of competition. Players-centred model—create lifelong love for physical activity.
Teach soccer skills through play. Looking to support and help, not take over. 18 & older. Need 10 more
coaches. 16 & over. Vulnerable sector screening will be paid for. Re-post this info on Facebook page.
