Mythology
For the next 3-4 weeks we will be exploring mythology from around the world.
You will be completing each assignment individually and have check-in conferences with
me. This project will be graded completely on an individual basis.
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Writing then Comparing
a. Being as serious or as silly as you would like, describe how you think the
world was created. (Minimum 10 sentences)
Read the “Greek Version of the Creation of Earth”.
b. In 3-5 sentences, describe your reaction to their version.
2. Read “Gods and Goddesses of Mt. Olympus”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. Writing Prompt: If given the choice, which god or goddess would you
like to be? Why? (Minimum 5 sentences)
3. Using both the “Greek Version of the Creation of Earth” worksheet and the story
“Gods and Goddesses of Mt. Olympus” complete the Greek family tree.
4. Read “Origin of Seasons”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. At the end of the story, how would you feel about the “deal” if you were
Hades, Demeter, or Persephone? (Choose only 1) (Min. 5 sentences)
5. Read “Prometheus the Fire Bringer”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. If you saw a group in need, would you disobey authority like Prometheus
did in order to help them? Why or why not? (Min. 5 sentences)
6. Read “Arachne”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. If you were Minerva, would you have challenged the mortal woman? If
yes, what would your reaction have been if you lost the challenge? If no,
why wouldn’t you have made the challenge? (Min. 3 sentences)
d. If you had the power to metamorph, what animal would you like to
become? Why did you choose that animal? (Min. 5 sentences)
7. Read “The Reward of Baucis and Philemon”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. If you were Baucis and Philemon what would you have asked for from
Zeus? (Min. 3 sentences)
8. Read “Phaeton”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. Have you ever not taken advice and after the fact realized you should
have? How did that make you feel? Did you learn anything from that
experience? Remember you will be sharing, so do not write anything too
personal. (Min. 5 sentences)
9. Read “Icarus and Daedalus”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. Pretend you are Daedalus; persuade Icarus to listen to you. (Min. 5
sentences)
10. Read “Adventures of Hercules”.
a. Choose and define 2 vocabulary words (other than ones already given).
b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
c. Make up your own “impossible” labor and describe what would need to be
done. (Min. 5 sentences)
11. Read “Norse Gods and Goddesses”.
a. Compare this explanation to the one of the Greeks. (Min. 5 sentences)
12. Choose a Norse myth.
a. Each group member must choose a different myth from the Norse section.
b. In 5-10 sentences summarize the myth you read.
c. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
13. Choose a section in Myths and Folktales Around the World.
a. Choose one myth.
b. In 5-10 sentences summarize the myth you read.
c. In 1-2 sentences, describe the theme of this myth.
d. Describe how this myth differs from one in Greek mythology. (Min. 3
sentences)
14. Write your own myth.
a. Using the worksheet as your guide, choose what you would like to
explain.
b. Include 4 of the 7 characteristics of a myth in your story.
c. Be sure to have an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and
resolution in your story.
15. Complete the self-assessment worksheet at the end of the unit.
16. Choose three of the following options:
a. Create your own fashion magazine.
b. Watch Disney’s Hercules and create a Venn diagram of the similarities and
differences between the story you read and the movie.
c. Draw yourself as a Greek god/goddess. Write a paragraph about yourself as that
Greek god or goddess that includes your Greek name, a description of yourself
and your powers.
d. Create and draw your very own mythical monster. Write a paragraph about the
monster that includes its name, a description, and its powers.
e. Create a mythological cereal box.
f. Create a mythological advertisement.
g. Pretend you are a news reporter and create a headline story about a mythological
character.
h. Create your own song demonstrating your knowledge of at least 5 mythological
characters.
17. Extra Credit Opportunities
a. Write a myth.
b. Mythological worksheets of your choice.
c. Internet Activity
d. Read the poem “Phaeton” and complete the Study and Discussion
questions.
e. Read the poem “To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Triumph” and
complete the Study and Discussion Questions.
f. Answer any of the Study and Discussion questions for the required stories.
18. Putting it all Together
You are going to place all of your work into a portfolio/notebook. Place the
assignments in order. Please make sure your name is on each of your
assignments.
