TEXTBOOK: “Contemporary College Algebra - A Graphing Approach”,
2nd edition, Thomas W. Hungerford. ISBN: 0-534-46656-7.
There is a Student Solutions Manual available but it’s not required. ISBN: 0-534-46660-5
Materials: textbook, notebook, a graphing calculator (preferably a TI-83).
We will be covering five chapters: Graphing and Technology, Equations and Inequalities, function and
Graphs, Polynomial and Rational Functions and Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. There will be 3 exams – one
approximately every 10 chapter sections - and a comprehensive final exam. Below is a list of homework
assignments. Mathematics is learned with practice and homework assignments should be used as practice
material to understand the concepts, topics and examples learned in class. Some homework problems may be
collected. Quizzes may be given. Test problems may come from unassigned problems in textbook exercises.
Course Objectives
Upon leaving this course, you will be able to:
i)
perform different operations involving algebraic expressions including exponential expressions,
ii)
graph linear and quadratic equations,
iii)
solve equations and inequalities algebraically and graphically,
iv)
graph polynomial, rational, algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions, and
v)
solve exponential and logarithmic equations and apply exponential and logarithmic models.
vi)
enter into the study of Calculus with the tools necessary to be successful!
Grading Policy (3 Exams and a Comprehensive Final Exam)
Average
A – 90-100
B – 80-89
C – 70-79

Testing Policy
Make-up exams are not given except in special circumstances requiring my permission. An email alert and a
note will be required for obtaining permission to take a make-up. A make up will be given on the next class
day ONLY.
Assignments – After we complete a section – it is recommended that you do the following assignments.
I will be available after class to answer any questions or you may email questions to dantonio@rowan.edu .
