Mrs. Hollingsworth English 10 Honors Double Entry Journals Assignment As you learn to navigate the rich and deep texts we will encounter this academic year, you will learn to engage with your text via Double Entry Journals (henceforth to be referred to as DEJ). This will be a difficult and strenuous project as you begin it; however, the more you do it the better you will become. I have provided a template for you use below. The left side must contain quotations from the reading with page numbers noted. Page numbers are required so that you can have easy access to the passage during class discussions. Should you wish to refer to a particularly large selection, you may paraphrase it. The right side must comment on your chosen quotes. Your right side can respond to questions such as: What strikes you about this? What was your first thought when you read this? And then? And then? What does this passage/idea make you think of or remember? Do you want to challenge or qualify this author’s claim? In what ways do you agree with it? Disagree? What else have you read/heard/experienced that connects with this author’s ideas? Does something confuse you or lead to further questions? How do you feel about this? What is the author’s purpose for saying/having the characters do this? Is there something syntactically complex or interesting going on? Using the template below, you may type out your responses. You may use your DEJ for class discussion and for completing papers in regards to works we read. These notes will be invaluable during our discussion and should reflect thought and effort. At the completion of each work, I will collect your DEJ for a grade. I want to see thought, detail, processing of ideas, and critical thinking. Plot summary, simplistic ideas, simple, insincere, or space fillers will not earn you credit. Name: Date: Author and Reading Covered: Page Quotations Commentary/Analysis
