Research statement:
“I may begin by noting that for much of my teaching life (shared about evenly between education
and psychology) I have led a double life, teaching (without entire conviction) reluctant
undergraduates how to use t and F to reject restrictive hypotheses, and teaching (also without
entire conviction) not-so-reluctant graduates how to use goodness-of-fit indicators…to retain
restrictive hypotheses.” Roderick P. McDonald
Like Dr. McDonald, I find that most of my teaching focuses on hypothesis tests and confidence
intervals, but I am increasing taken by how rarely they are the right tool for research questions.
Often the questions as are: Which model best fits the data?, How well does the model fit the
data?, and Why is the data sometimes saying things that make no sense?
The vast majority of my publications involve working with scientists. This has recently included
working with 1) Dr. St.Hilaire and Rakesh Mandel on possible links between climate, the
distribution of endocrine disruptors, and prostate and estrogen response positive breast cancer, 2)
Dr. Brey and his graduate students and the physiology of radiation in humans, and 3) Dr. Glenn
and her graduate students on the use of lidar to estimate landscape characteristics in semi-arid
environments.

Book
"An approximate answer to the right problem is worth a good deal more than an exact answer to
an approximate problem." John Tukey
I am currently working on a book tentatively titled: Basic Data Analysis for Time Series with R:
Regression and Model Selection with AR(m) Filters. For better or worse, it will unlike any other
book I have seen on time series and will focus on the analysis of data, rather than using data to
demonstrate mathematical models.
