DeWayne R Derryberry, Ph. D Mathematics Department, Idaho State University The 2013 COMAP mathematics modeling team from Idaho State University that earned a meritorious designation. From left to right: Garrett Castle, Douglas Walker, Dr. Derryberry (coach), and Damon Herrera. Tuesday, March 15, 2011 Employment “I believe sanity and realism can be restored to the teaching of Mathematical Statistics most easily and directly by entrusting such teaching largely to men and women who have had personal experience of research in the Natural Sciences”. Sir R. A. Fisher Associate Professor, Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID Fall 2012 – present Assistant Professor, Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID Fall 2006 – Spring 2012 Assistant Professor, University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA Fall 2000 – Spring 2006 Visiting Assistant Professor, College of Business, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR Fall 1998 – Summer 2000 Resume – DeWayne Derryberry 1 Research statement: “I may begin by noting that for much of my teaching life (shared about evenly between education and psychology) I have led a double life, teaching (without entire conviction) reluctant undergraduates how to use t and F to reject restrictive hypotheses, and teaching (also without entire conviction) not-so-reluctant graduates how to use goodness-of-fit indicators…to retain restrictive hypotheses.” Roderick P. McDonald Like Dr. McDonald, I find that most of my teaching focuses on hypothesis tests and confidence intervals, but I am increasing taken by how rarely they are the right tool for research questions. Often the questions as are: Which model best fits the data?, How well does the model fit the data?, and Why is the data sometimes saying things that make no sense? The vast majority of my publications involve working with scientists. This has recently included working with 1) Dr. St.Hilaire and Rakesh Mandel on possible links between climate, the distribution of endocrine disruptors, and prostate and estrogen response positive breast cancer, 2) Dr. Brey and his graduate students and the physiology of radiation in humans, and 3) Dr. Glenn and her graduate students on the use of lidar to estimate landscape characteristics in semi-arid environments. Education "Numerical quantities focus on expected values, graphical summaries on unexpected values." John Tukey Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics (Dec. 1998) College of Science, Oregon State University Dissertation topic: Parametric Extensions of the Cox Regression Model Further graduate study: Arizona State University (1990 –93): Mathematics, Microeconomics, Statistics, Management Science, Operations Management Master of Science in Management Science (1990) College of Business, Arizona State University. Focus: Optimization, Decision Analysis, Applied Probability Applied Project: Constrained Quadratic Programming Using an Interior Point Method Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (1988) College of Liberal Arts, Arizona State University Focus: Numerical Methods, Differential Equations Courses taught: All manner of introductory and intermediate applied statistics, regression, optimization, mathematical modeling, time series, calculus, probability, and mathematical statistics. Resume – DeWayne Derryberry 2 Book "An approximate answer to the right problem is worth a good deal more than an exact answer to an approximate problem." John Tukey I am currently working on a book tentatively titled: Basic Data Analysis for Time Series with R: Regression and Model Selection with AR(m) Filters. For better or worse, it will unlike any other book I have seen on time series and will focus on the analysis of data, rather than using data to demonstrate mathematical models.
