MEDICAL THERAPEUTICS

Lesson Plan Title: Code of Ethics

Standards Addressed: Standard 6.0 The student will evaluate accepted ethical practices with respect to cultural, social, and ethnic differences within the health care environment

6.2 Interpret a Code of Ethics.

Specific Objectives:

Define ethics, code of ethics

List at least 6 basic rules of ethics for health care personnel

Required Materials: Textbook, computers, Power point presentation notes, worksheet 4:1

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Should animals be used in medical research even if it results in the death of the animal? Should human beings be cloned? These are health care dilemmas. There are no easy answers, however, health care workers have some guidelines- an ethical code. We are going to read and talk about ethics and how health care workers have a code of ethics.

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1. Notes- PPP define ethics and the basic principles of ethics

2. Now turn to page 79 in textbook and find the basic principles of ethics.

Read and write the principles and then, beside each one, answer the question “Why is this principle an important principle as a health care worker?” Review answers.

3. When you become a health care worker, you will need to learn the code of ethics for that occupation. Get a computer and google code of ethics for your choice of occupation, example “code of ethics for physical therapy”.

Read the code of ethics. Now, answer the following questions from worksheet 4:1 about how these principles differ from the principles in the book.

4. Have volunteers present to the class the code of ethics for their occupation. How do these ethics differ or are they the same basically?

Class discussion.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Make sure the students can define ethics and list at least 6 rules of ethics for health care personnel. Explain to students that health care workers do not have all the answers, but they do have a code to follow to help guide them.
