St. Catharine College is an independent, coeducational college and is committed to the free

of Independent Kentucky Colleges. The Associate Degree Nursing Program has
conditional approval from the Kentucky Board of Nursing and is accredited with warning
status by the Accreditation Commission For Education in Nursing (ACEN).
What is an Associate Degree in
Nursing (ADN)?
Nursing programs that require approximately two years of full time study in the nursing
major. At SCC a student completes 72 college credit hours to earn an Associate Degree in
Nursing. See the St. Catharine College Nursing Handbook for the complete description of
the ADN program.
How long will it take to complete The nursing major may be completed in two years. However, there are pre-requisite
courses that must be completed prior to entering the nursing major.

How do I become a registered
nurse (RN)?
Graduates of an approved program take the licensing examination for registered nurses.
Upon passing this NCLEX-RN examination and meeting other state requirements,
graduates are eligible to apply for licensure by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and
comparable agencies in other states for use of the title registered nurse (RN).
What courses do I need before
entering the nursing major?
Academic courses are indicated on the nursing curriculum plan of study provided on the
reverse side. Credit hours are reflected in parenthesis.
Where do I complete my clinical
nursing experiences?
In order to provide a well balanced clinical experience, health care agencies across central
Kentucky are used for nursing experiences. Agencies include Baptist Hospital East,
Ephraim McDowell Medical Center, Flaget Memorial, Hardin Memorial Hospital, Norton
Health Care, Frazier Rehabilitation Center, and Springview Hospital.
How often are classes admitted?
A nursing class is admitted each fall. The application deadline for fall admission is posted
on the SCC website. Selection criteria include GPA of pre-requisite courses and
Admission HESI Exam scores.

What do I need to do to be
successful in the program?
Nursing is a demanding program of study. The majority of nursing courses include
classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences and range from 12-18 hours per week of
time. Approximately three hours of study per credit hour is recommended each week.
The ability to prioritize, organize one’s time and have good study habits are critical
outcomes.
Is there a PN bridge program?
No. Practical Nurses are eligible for advanced placement into the second semester of the
ADN Program.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE AND CRITERIA
STEP 1:
Submit to the SCC Admission’s Department:
1. Completed St Catharine College admission form.
2. An official high school transcript or official GED scores.
3. Official transcripts from each college/university previously attended.
4. Complete all other admission requirements as requested by St. Catharine College.
5. For individuals who seek to transfer credit the Registrar at SCC will determine if transfer courses meet course
descriptions.
6. Individuals are encouraged to meet with a pre-nursing advisor to develop a pre-nursing academic plan.
STEP 2:
1. Completion of the following courses:
 HSC 110 Medical Terminology
 BIO 204 Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab
 BIO 205 Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab
 ENG 101 English Composition I
 ENG 102 English Composition II
 MAT 105 College Mathematics (or higher)
 PSY 100
General Psychology
 PSY 150
Developmental Psychology
2. The student must have at least a C or better in all pre-requisite courses.
3. The student must have a minimal cumulative GPA of 2.75. The cumulative GPA is calculated only on pre-requisite
course grades required by the Department of Nursing for admission.
4. Students may not repeat more than two prerequisite courses to be considered for admission. Of those, students may
repeat only one of the two Anatomy & Physiology courses (BIO 204 or 205) to be considered for admission.
5. All pre-requisite courses must be completed by the end of May for fall admission.
6. If a student is transferring from another nursing program, the student must be eligible for readmission to that
program to be considered for transfer into the SCC nursing program. The point of admission into the SCC program
will be determined on an individual basis.
7. In addition, students must complete a Nursing Assistant course and pass the examination by the Kentucky Board of
Nursing. Results to be submitted to the Nursing Department 4 weeks prior to the start of fall semester.
STEP 3:
HESI Requirement
1. Attend a mandatory Preadmission Conference. Preadmission Conferences will be held in October, January, and
February. Dates and times TBA.
2. After attending a preadmission conference, schedule to take the Admission HESI examination. The Admission HESI
exam will be given in November, January, and February. Dates and times TBA. Admission HESI scores are evaluated
as part of the selection process. A fee is due when the exam is scheduled. The exam may be scheduled by contacting
the Department of Nursing.
3. A student must achieve a minimal score of 77 % on the Assessment Cumulative Score on the HESI Exam. Students
may repeat the HESI admission exam with the best score submitted for admission consideration.

STEP 4:
Application Process
1. Complete an ADN Program application and return it to the Nursing Office. Applications can be found at sccky.edu
or in the Nursing Office. Applications with completed HESI exams are due by date posted on SCC website for fall
admission. Students must have completed successfully all pre-requisite courses by the end of the spring semester to be
considered for the fall enrollment.
2. Admission will be granted to students based on the Assessment Cumulative Score on the HESI Exam and the
student’s pre-requisite course GPA. The students with the highest Assessment Cumulative Scores on the HESI
examination and highest GPA will be granted admission to the program.
3. Students must submit a background check and drug screen (Contact Nursing Department for specific directions).
Positive results may preclude admission to the nursing program.
4. The Kentucky Board of Nursing shall have the authority to deny access to completing the RN licensure examination
to anyone who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor. Therefore, students will need to clarify their status
with the Nursing Program Director before being considered for admission.
5. The number of students admitted each admission cycle will be based upon faculty and clinical site availability.
6. Students will be notified of acceptance by date posted on website. Upon acceptance to the nursing program, students
will be assisted to register for semester one nursing courses.
STEP 5:
Program Requirements
1. Attend program mandatory acceptance meeting on date posted on website.
2. Submit the following requirements 4 weeks prior to program orientation:
 Physical Examination form, including documentation of immunization, and 2 step TB skin test.
 Provide verification of current Healthcare Provider CPR certification through the American Heart Association.
 Provide verification of SRNA certification.
3. Attend the mandatory orientation to the nursing program held just prior to the start of fall semester.
