Required Text: Linear Algebra with Applications, Seventh Edition, Prentice Hall,
Inc., 2006, by Steven J. Leon.
Objective: This is a course designed to give students an early experience of
the power and applicability of discrete models in the solution of problems in
mathematics, the sciences, computer science, and engineering. Discrete
Systems I focuses on linear algebra and its applications.
General Information: The corequisite for this course is Math 2221 (Calculus
II). A certain level of mathematical maturity will be required to be
successful in this course.
Calculator Information: It is currently the policy of the mathematics
department at Georgia Southwestern that a TI-83/TI-84 calculator is required
in mathematics courses numbered 2222 and below. This does not apply to this
class, but you will certainly find it helpful to have a calculator that has
matrix capabilities. If you have a calculator (TI-82, TI-85, TI-86, or
others) that has similar capabilities, it should serve you well for this
class, but I may not be able to help you figure out how to use it. Important
note: On exams you may NOT share a calculator with another student in the
class. If you want to use a calculator on an exam (and there will be times
that you will want one), you must bring one with you to the exam.
Grading/Attendance: There will be ten in-class quizzes, three in-class exams
and a comprehensive final exam. Each quiz will be worth 20 points. No make-up
quiz will be allowed. Two lowest scores of your quizzes will be dropped. Each
of the three in-class exams will be worth 80 points. The problems in the
quizzes and exams will be similar to the assigned homework problems. The
final exam will be worth 200 points. The grading scale (in percentage) for
each exam will be as follows:
A: 90 - 100, B: 80 - 89, C: 70 - 79, D: 60 - 69, F: 0 – 59
Thus the total number of possible points in this class is 600 and grades will
be based on the following scale:
A: 540 – 600
B: 480 – 534
C: 420 – 474
D: 360 – 414
F: 0 – 354
Grades that fall in the gaps are borderline grades and will be moved up to the next grade (so 535539 points will be A's; 534 points is not a borderline grade and will be a B). I will simply total
your points at the end of the semester to determine your final course grade. Each exam and quiz
grade may be scaled (curved) as I see fit.
The exam schedule is attached. I will allow a maximum of one make-up exam if
you miss an exam for a reason I find acceptable and if you notify me of the
reason for your absence in a timely manner. You MUST notify me at the
earliest possible opportunity of your reason for missing the exam. If I find
that your reason is acceptable, we will arrange a time for you to take a
make-up exam. You MUST be prepared to DOCUMENT (in writing) your reason for
missing the exam. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy. I will also let
you take an exam early if you cannot take it at the regular time for a reason
I find acceptable. Exams that are not taken with the class will cover the
same material but may look quite a bit different from those the class takes.
You may not use notes of any kind during the exams, and as noted above, you
may not share calculators on the exams. Any violation of the GSW Policy on
Academic Integrity will be treated very seriously. You may find details of

It is your responsibility to attend this class regularly and to attempt all
assigned homework problems. Each class period I may bring an attendance sheet
that I will pass around the room. This is simply for my records and will not
be used to determine your final grade. Though I will not give an attendance
grade, it has been my experience that students with poor attendance tend to
receive low grades. (It is not necessarily the case that those with good
attendance receive high grades.) Homework will not be collected or graded,
but I will spend some class time (and office hour time) going over questions
you have on the assigned problems. It is especially important that you make
serious attempts at solving the assigned problems before I answer questions
about them in class. There is little benefit to seeing me work the problems
unless you have tried them yourself first. As you may be the only one
working a particular problem, if you work extra (unassigned) problems, please
ask for help on those during office hours.
The fact that homework will not be collected should not be used as an excuse
to avoid doing it regularly. As a general guideline, you should spend a
MINIMUM of approximately two hours working on this material for each hour of
class time. This means that you should spend a __**__MINIMUM__**__ of SIX
hours per week outside of class working on this class. Students who make an
effort to keep up with the material are considerably more likely to perform
well on exams. There is a rather large amount of material that must be
covered in this class, so there will be days that I do not have sufficient
time to answer all questions. If you have questions that do not get answered
in class, PLEASE come to my office hours.
Policy on cell phones:
Your cell phones should be OFF (or at least SILENT) during class. You are not to use it (for any
purpose) during class. If your cell phone rings (or makes any sound) even once or if I see you
using it (this includes ANY use of the device), you will be required to leave the class for the day.
If this happens during an exam, I will take your exam and you will leave the class for the day.
You will not be given a make-up exam. I will grade what you have completed. In fact, during
exams, you may not LOOK at your cell phone. You will place it out of sight for the duration of
the exam. If I see that you are looking at your cell phone (or other similar device) during the
exam, I will take your exam and you will leave class for the day. As above, I will grade the
portion of your exam that you have completed.
Disabilities: Please let me know during the first week of this semester if you have disabilities of
which I should be informed.
Final Exam: The final exam will be Tuesday, December 4, 2007, from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm
Midterm Date: Friday, October 5, 2007
Last Day to Withdraw From Class Without Penalty: Friday, October 12, 2007
There is NO extra credit work.
Please feel free to ask questions in class and to come by my office when you
need extra help. My office hours are for you. Make use of them. If you want
to see me at other times, let me know.
NOTE: For privacy and security reasons, I cannot discuss grades over the
phone or through email. Please bring questions about grades to me in person.
At the end of the semester, I will submit your grades electronically, and
they will be available through R.A.I.N. soon after finals are completed.
