This course will provide the basic foundation for more advanced courses in psychology at all levels. Text: Bernstein, Psychology, 7th edition, 2002. OBLIGATION OF THE STUDENT: Each student is required to attend class on a regular basis and be current on assigned readings and lectures. Moreover, each student is required to participate in all educational activities whether in or out of the classroom setting. Any student who anticipates numerous absences should not enroll in the class. Excessive absences by a student require the student drop the course to avoid receiving a poor grade. See College Catalog “Student Responsibilities”. GRADING PROCEDURE: There will be a total of 520 points available to the student. The 520 points consist of 5 tests worth 100 points each. The lowest exam score for the semester will be dropped. The remaining 20 points will come from Participation/Attendance. The student’s scores will be added together and divided into the highest score in the class to yield a percentage score. EXTRA CREDIT: It is my policy to offer extra credit to those who attend class on a consistent basis. This opportunity will be extended to students who have not missed more then 1 class. We will meet twice a week for 4 hours per class…. missing more then one class will cause you to miss a lot of information. Extra credit will consist of a paper of no less than two pages double-spaced and worth a possible 15 points. The instructor must approve the extra credit topic and the paper would be due by the Tuesday before the final exam. Plagiarism and cheating will be dealt with severely. LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED REGARDLESS OF REASON!!! All test dates are listed on the following page “Syllabus”. In addition, I have listed the chapters we will be working on for each class session. Students are expected to have read the material prior to attending class. Tests will be a mixture of lecture and reading material. The average scores will yield the following grade: 90 80 70 60 0 - 100% 89 79 69 59 = = = = = A B C D F CLASS INFORMATION SHEET SYLLABUS DATE 6/10 6/12 6/17 6/19 6/24 6/26 7/1 7/3 7/8 7/10 7/15 7/17 TOPIC Introduction and Administrative Details Introduction to Psychology Research in Psychology Research in Psychology Biological Aspects of Psychology Exam #1—Chapters 1-3 Sensation Perception Perception Learning Exam #2—Chapters 4-6 Memory Cognition and Language Cognition and Language Consciousness Exam #3—Chapters 7-9 Mental Abilities Motivation and Emotion EXTRA CREDIT TOPIC DUE Motivation and Emotion Human Development Exam #4—Chapters 10-12 Personality Psychological Disorders Psychological Disorders Treatment of Psychological Disorders Exam #5---Chapters 14-16 Health, Stress and Coping Social Psychology EXTRA CREDIT DUE Exam #6—Chapters 13, 17, and 18 Readings 1, 2 2, 3 4, 5 5, 6 7, 8 8, 9 10,11 11, 12 14, 15 15, 16 13, 17, 18
