 Bachelor's in Biology from University of California, Irvine, 1972.
Positions:
 Professor (70% research, 30% teaching), Department of Plant Pathology, Kansas State
University, 1990-present.
 Associate Professor (60% research, 40% teaching), Department of Plant Pathology,
Kansas State University, 1984-1990.
 Assistant Professor (50% research, 50% teaching), Department of Plant Pathology,
Kansas State University, 1978-1984.
 Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Plant Pathology, University of California,
Davis, 1974-1978.
 Graduate Teaching Assistant, Department of Biology, California State University, Long
Beach, 1973.
Current Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities include the undergraduate course Microbes, Plants, and the
Human Perspective and the graduate course Plant Pathogenic Fungi. Chairs important
departmental committees related to teaching including Graduate Student Recruitment and Selection
Committee and Graduate Student Club. Research emphasis is with soil-borne and foliar fungal
diseases of wheat. Participates in the development of wheat germplasm resistant to fungal
pathogens in Kansas. Studies the effects of various cultural practices (tillage, fertilizers, crop
rotations, etc.) on diseases caused by these pathogens. Determines the efficacy of disease-control
chemicals on wheat diseases. Studies the biology of wheat pathogens (life cycles, interactions with
other microorganisms, effect of environment) in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field.

Teaching Accomplishments:
 Developed and taught an undergraduate/graduate, three-credit-hour, lecture/laboratory
course entitled "Plant Disease Control" every fall semester from 1978-1993. The course
was part of the undergraduate Pest Science and Management Curriculum. See table
below for student evaluation scores.

Pathogens" in fall, 1982 and fall, 1985. The average of scores for student evaluations is
4.84 on a 1-5 scale.
 Developed and taught a one-hour undergraduate lecture course entitled "Seminar in
Crop Protection" in spring, 1987. This was the "capstone" course for the Pest Science
and Management Curriculum. No student evaluations were taken for this course.
 Chair, College Course and Curriculum Committee for two years (1988-1990).
 Coordinator for graduate-level seminar course, 1993.

helped plan, implement, and attended numerous workshops and seminars on improving
teaching effectiveness. (1980-82, and 1999-2008).
 Taught "Principles of Plant Pathology" each spring semester 1995-2009. This is a threehour, lecture/laboratory course and serves as the introductory plant pathology course
required by several undergraduate majors in the College of Agriculture. Average
