Monthly publication of Sabang Church of Christ Disciples Sabang, Dasmariñas, Cavite 4114, Tel. No. 046-416-0221 NOVEMBER 2005 VOLUME 3, NUMBER 11 P-A-G-K-U-P-K-O-P by Pastor Eman Revellame Sr. Tila mabilis ang pag-usad ng panahon. Muli maraming salamat. Sa Dios ang kapurihan! Si Pastor Eman Revellame Sr. ang Administrative Pastor ng UCCP Tignoan sa kasalukuyan. I Saw the Lord in Tignoan by Lina L. Reyes When tragedy struck Tignoan and some parts of Quezon our hearts broke. We were ashamed to admit it but when life’s circumstance hurt so much, our faith is often mixed with doubt. Lord, I sure don’t understand you. Why did you allow this to happen? Lord, You are beyond my understanding. But I still wonder, have you turned your back on us? Have you forgotten to be good? Our trip to Tignoan last October 4, 2004 was a revelation of God’s mercy and kindness – Jeremiah 29:1113. The people of Tignoan were happy and alive. Their faces showed no trace of yesterday’s terror. Recounting their ordeal, I was so amazed to see them painless and still grateful to the Lord that they survived. Yes, Lord. You are good in countless ways. Forgive me Lord, for my questions and doubts about you! After lunch, we went house visitation. Hopping from house to house, we saw the piglets (part of the money donated by UCCP Sabang) and confirmed “baboy na sila” weighing 60-70 kilos. There were fifteen piglets but one died. Walking side by side with Pastor Emman I felt so glad that I have known this man whom God has chosen to be the “jolly angel” of UCCP Tignoan. Every loss leaves an empty space that only God’s presence can fill. It was time to say good-bye. As we waved our hands, I looked around once more. And I said to myself, “the things they lost momentarily were replaced with a treasure only God can give – FAITH. Trustee of God’s Ministry “Stewardship is the use of God-given resources for the accomplishment of God-given goals.” (Ron Blue from Charles Swindoll’s Favorite Sermon Stories and Illustrations). Utilizing this quote we can say that stewardship is not, therefore, about the steward, which from the word itself would create such impression, but about God. It is from God that the resources a steward uses come and God’s goals a steward is directed upon. Another word for a steward, then, is a “trustee” who is a person especially called or set apart by the Owner to do a particular act of service. A trustee does not own the resources or ministry left on his/her hands. He/she was just called to manage it wisely for the pleasure and glory of the Source. The resources a trustee manages may be classified into three T’s – time, talent and treasure. On Stewardship Month such as we are observing this November, it is talent and treasure that are popularly discussed in sermons and Sunday school classes, culminating on thanksgiving offering. Stewardship theme is oftentimes focused on money and talents. In our church, for example, there is this yearly “Talents’ Nite” galore displaying the many gifts members possess and putting them together in a presentation. We also integrate the Everybody’s Birthday on the last Sunday of the month where we offer a certain amount of money representing our respective ages. Has it occurred to us to reflect on time as a resource God has also entrusted to us to manage and to ask the question of what indeed is the God-given goal that has to be accomplished in stewardship? Time weaves through talents and treasure. It is not just measured in terms of hours or seconds, days or weeks but in the quality of life well lived. Time is the thread that connects our acts of stewardship with God’s ministry entrusted on us as trustees or stewards. Jesus ministered with a sense of urgency as expressed in this verse, “I must work the works of Him that sent me while it is day. The night comes when no one can work.” (John 9:4) Note the reference to God who had sent him. He did not take ownership of the work but attributed it to God. And what is it that he must work on? To reconcile people to God - this is the ministry entrusted upon God’s stewards. The Apostle Paul wrote this clearly to the Corinthians saying, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Cor. 5:18) We have been estranged from God because of sin, of rebellion against God’s will. This rebellion is manifested on the deteriorating condition of our environment, on wars between peoples, on poverty, acts of terror and many others. To be a steward, therefore, is to participate in God’s reconciling acts with a sense of immediacy. The material things we enjoy in this life as well as the skills and abilities we possess enabling us to earn a living are to be managed towards reconciling people back to the Creator, the Owner of everything in this world. This November we shall focus our Sunday school lessons, sermons and weekday exhortations on the theme, “The Church: Trustee of God’s Ministry” as broken down on the following lectionary with Schedule of Preachers: Theme: Iglesya: Pinagkatiwalaan ng Ministeryo ni Jesus November 6 – Communion Sunday “Pinagkatiwalaang Mangalaga ng Sangnilikha” OT: Job 26:5-14 NT: Roma 1:18-25 Preacher: Pastor Leng Lubang November 13 – Church Workers Sunday “Pinagkatiwalaang Kumalinga ng mga Manggagawa” OT: 2 Kings 4:8-17 NT: 1 Cor. 9:1-14 Preacher: Elder Juliet Dayrit November 20 – Theological Education Sunday “Pinagkatiwalaang Pahalagahan ang Bawat Oras” OT: Ecclesiastes 12:1-7 NT: Colossians 4:2-6 Preacher: Pastor Leng Lubang November 27 – Stewardship/Thanksgiving Sunday “Pinagkatiwalaang Maghandog ng Buong Sarili sa Diwa ng Pasasalamat” OT: Habbakuk 3:10-19 NT: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-24 Preacher: Pastor Leng Lubang May we appreciate in a deeper way and be challenged to take on the responsibility of being a trustee of God’s ministry of reconciliation. Get to Know Becky, an International Intern Hello UCCP Sabang! My name is Rebecca (Becky) Mateer, and I am your new international intern. I am grateful for this opportunity to introduce myself to the congregation; I hope it helps you learn a little bit about me. I have been sent to the Philippines by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to serve for one year in partnership with UCCP. The Lutheran Church’s program is for young adults to gain international experience to help foster stronger leadership in the church. As a volunteer exposurist, my job is to learn as much as I can about Filipino life. My home congregations in Houston and San Antonio, Texas sponsor my volunteer year, and I regularly write newsletters back to them reporting on my experiences. UCCP is graciously hosting me, and I have been assigned to live here in Cavite and work with your congregation. I have been in the Philippines since August living in Manila and traveling around Southern Tagalog for orientation. After two months of traveling and intense experiences, I am excited to settle down into a community. Besides a few reflection retreats in January and May, I will be living and working here at UCCP Sabang until August 2006. I am a twenty-four year old American. I was born in Ohio, but I moved to Texas when I was eight years old. I went to high school in Houston, Texas, but I have been living in San Antonio for the past five years. I went to Trinity University and earned my Bachelor’s of Arts in History and my Masters of Arts in Teaching. Í am certified to teach high school History and Special Education. During the summers, I work at a summer camp in Pennsylvania leading children in kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, and canoeing. I love being in the outdoors, reading, and traveling. I am a middle child. I have a sister, Kate, who is twenty-five and engaged to be married to Sage. She is an English teacher in Austin, Texas, and she studies Shakespeare. My brother, Daniel, is eighteen years old. He is a freshman at the University of Texas in Austin. He studies Business and Psychology. He also plays guitar for a band. My mother is a Children’s Librarian and my father workers for American Racer Tires. It is difficult to come into a new community where I do not know anyone, so thank you for making my first Sunday at Sabang so welcoming. I am still trying to figure out what to do and say. Thank you for your patience with me; it will take me a while to learn everyone’s names and how to speak Tagalog. I am eager to get to know the congregation, so please feel free to come up and talk with me because I feel a little shy and overwhelmed. My primary job here is to build relationships; I always have time to visit with you. I look forward to getting to know you and Sabang. Thank you for hosting me. Dave Samson at Kap. Rene Cantada. 1970. 1975. D’Newsbits 2nd Mission Team visits UCCP Tignoan. A team of six people, five of whom were women went to visit UCCP Tignoan on October 4, 2005 to fellowship with church members and see with their own eyes the progress of the “AbotBiyaya” Mission partnership project. Testimonies of the fellowship-visit are to be read in this same issue of DNews. The six who constitute this second visit were Pastor Leng, CWA President Joann Samonte, Outreach Teacher and Elder Juliet Dayrit, Sunday school Teacher Lina Reyes and representative of the US Fund Raising Team Volet Jardiniano. UCM member Allan Samonte served as the “pilot” having offered their van as transport service. The next mission team will be from the young people and UCM groups sometime January next year. Project Nehemiah Updates: Church roof almost complete. After more than two months of slow but careful work by a small crew of welders supervised voluntarily by Trustee Raymond Fauni, the roof steel frame of the church building has been completed. Now the covering sheets are to be installed and in a few weeks the whole structure will be covered, thereby, protecting it from weather elements. As of this date, the total fund raised for Project Nehemiah including the seed money is P4,310,075.10. A total pledge of P446,000.00 was generated for the Raise the Roof, P141,043 of which was already given. The remaining work which will require millions still of pesos includes the ramp, plastering of walls, flooring of the ground level, installation of windows and doors, comfort rooms, office partitioning and retaining wall along the creek. SCCD chosen as ECUIMM placement The UCCP Sabang Church of Christ Disciples was chosen to be one of the placements in this year’s batch of ECUIMM (Ecumenical Intern in Mutual Mission). ECUIMM is a program of the UCCP National Office in partnership with some Protestant churches in US, Canada and Europe. Participated in by eight interns this year, SCCD was assigned a young woman, Rebecca Mateer, from Texas, USA belonging to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). An article about her is written in this issue of DNews. Amid heavy downpour and inclement weather condition, the 22nd Founding Anniversary of the Disciples Learning Academy was celebrated meaningfully with Ms. Lina Reyes, the chairperson of the DLA School Board as guest speaker on October 28, 2005. Her message centered on the theme, “The Heart of Education is the Education of the Heart” challenging parents and school personnel to work hand in hand in bringing out the best in every pupil’s heart to become a godly, educated person of society. Integrated with the program was the United Nations Day wherein some member countries were represented in a ramp parade by various class muses. Winners of the different contests were also awarded during the program. Awardees were Christine Joy Mallari, Dilean Frani, Rica May Candoy, Emily Mae Mangubat, Ma. Niña Bajade, and Karen Joy Millana for Flag Making Contest and for Poster Making contest, the sole winner was Avinson Matro. Teacher Michelle Policarpio coordinated the entire program First Scout Investiture held. The first ever Scout Investiture in the DLA was held on October 28, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. involving 41 girl scouts and 25 boy scouts. Investing scout officer from the Dasmarinas Public School First District was Scout Master Melvin Reyes. Parents, sponsors and other guests witnessed this historical event and from them, a total of P2,360.00 was received as gift for the DLA scouting organization. An Overnight Backyard Camping followed the investiture but due to heavy rains, the scouts made do with classrooms as sleeping area and not tents. Scout Master Melvin Reyes with another Scout Master Nilo Sumagui provided the leadership training to the Boy Scouts. Leading this scout organization in the DLA are Teachers Johnirey Sapon and Janet Malcon. DLA faculty line-up changes. The resignation and maternity leave of two faculty members led to some necessary changes in the faculty line-up of the DLA. Teacher Mabel Bago handling Gr. I class went on maternity leave on September 5, 2005 necessitating the hiring of a substitute teacher. For the first month, Teacher Roderick Cacho, a Bachelor of Elementary Education graduate of Philippine Normal University filled in for her. Teacher Cynthia Nicolas took over the second month due to some work problems with Teacher Roderick. Teacher Cynthia is a BSE graduate from Philippine Christian University with LET (Licensure Examination for Teachers) and has long years of teaching experience in pre-school and elementary levels. In mid-October, Teacher Monique Meran was called to the Public School, thereby, resigning as Science and Math teacher for Gr. V-VI. She was replaced by Teacher Lorie Ann Rosal who already worked as part time faculty in the DLA last year.
