Grade 9 Art Exam Review – June 2014 FORMAT OF EXAM: (1.5 hours) Knowledge – 20 marks, Thinking – 20 marks, Communication – 20 marks, Application – 40 marks TYPE OF QUESTION (S): Section 1 15 minutes Short Answer Thinking – 10 marks 10 minutes Written Response Communication – 20 marks 20 minutes Visual Definitions Application – 20 marks 15 minutes There will be 4 short drawing tasks that will require that you create a drawing 3 Elements / Principles of Design – these will be specified in the question. There will be 2 short drawing tasks that will require you to create a drawing that includes concepts learned in Art History lessons (Egyptian, Greek, & Roman only). Section 6 Application – 20 marks You will be asked a generic Art History question. You must write a short introduction with a thesis (2-3 sentences) The rest of your answer must be in the form of 3 body paragraphs and must incorporate 3 art pieces (from the options provided) that we have studied and provide reasons to support your answer. NOTE: Title only is sufficient to identify what art pieces you are discussing. Section 5 Apply Your Art Knowledge You will be asked 4 Art History questions that require short (2-3 sentence) responses. The questions will touch on specific works that we have studied. Your answers may also involve you opinion. Section 4 15 minutes There will be 4 slides of art pieces that we have not have studied in class. For the first 2 slides, you will be asked to use your observational skills to identify whether the piece is Egyptian, Greek, or Roman. You will have to provide 2 reasons to support your answer. For the second 2, you will be asked to identify the Art Approach (Imitiational, Emotional, or Formal) and provide one reason to support your choice. For all 4 slides, you will be asked to identify either an Element (e.g. line, shape, texture, etc…) OR a Principle of Design (Balance, Unity, Contrast, etc….) and explain where and/or how it is used. Section 3 Knowledge – 10 marks Thinking – 10 marks TIME: There will be 10 slides shown from your slide list. You may be asked for any 2 of the following: the Artist, the Title, the Medium, or the Period. You will also be asked to provide 1 detail of information about each piece. (NOTE: NO DATES!) IMPORTANT: No word banks will be provided. Section 2 Slide Identification CATEGORY & MARKS: Multiple Choice Knowledge – 10 marks 10 minutes There will be 20 multiple choice questions, all to be answered within the exam package as well as on a scantron card. Each question is worth a ½ mark. Topics covered in these questions will range from studio terms & techniques used this year to general art history knowledge (ie. artists, terms, techniques, concepts studied) Remaining time – check over your work! This art can look realistic or it can look abstract, but it is emotionalism if the viewer feels the artist’s emotion. 3) Formalism – When art is made to have an interesting design by emphasizing the use of the elements and principles, such as shape or line. Usually this type of artwork is abstract (much less realistic).
