Insects Going Buggy in the Library Grade 2 ~Lesson #5 Objectives (including library skills to be covered): SWBAT match illustrations of insects to general descriptions of color, size, shape, etc. Lesson 1. Teacher-librarian will remind students that although many people consider all kinds of small “critters,” including spiders and worms, to be insects, insects are animals with six legs and three body parts. 2. Distribute the “Scavenger Hunt” worksheet and pencils. Read the list of descriptors together and answer any questions students may have about the list. 3. Option A (if computer/internet access is available for whole class): Ahead of time, copy the folder of insect-photo websites into Shared Folders for access from all student computers. Assist students in logging on to the computers and opening Shared Folders. Demonstrate how students can click on any of the links and explore the insect photos available there. Demonstrate the methods for going back to the original website and going to another bookmarked site. Assist students as they complete the “scavenger hunt,” writing an insect’s name for each category. (Note: They do not need to complete the list in order!) 4. Option B (if whole-class internet access is not available): Place collections of insect books on tables or desks for students to browse the photos and other illustrations. Assist students as they complete the “scavenger hunt,” writing an insect’s name for each category. (Note: They do not need to complete the list in order!) If You Want To Go Further (Enhancements) 5. Encourage students to indicate on their papers which illustrations/photos are their favorite(s), then share those with the whole class. Materials and Resources Materials “Insect photos scavenger hunt” worksheet for each student Pencils Computers with internet access for each student or pair of students (option A) Multiple books per group with photos or color illustrations of all kinds of insects (option B) Web Resources List of 34 websites appended to this lesson; zipped folder of same links attached (ready to be copied to Shared Folders) Insects Going Buggy in the Library Grade 2 ~Lesson #5 Implementation Notes: Students can easily work as pairs, taking turns writing and controlling the mouse or books.
