William Stukeley CE Primary School Policy for Science Introduction This policy outlines the teaching, organisation and management of the Science taught and learnt at William Stukeley Primary School. The school’s policy for Science is based on the National Curriculum. The policy has been drawn up as a result of staff discussion and has the full agreement of the Governing Body. The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of all the teaching staff. Science is integral to all aspects of life and as such we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards Science. Science in our school is concerned with children finding out about the world in which they live in. It involves children developing knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world around them. Aims and General Principles Our aim is to help children develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and should enable them to develop and use the skills associated with scientific methods of investigation. To this end we aim to: Make Science an integral part of the curriculum. Enhance learning and teaching across all faculties using Science. Provide opportunities for pupils to become autonomous, effective and discerning users of science. Provide opportunities and support to develop staff skills and competence. Develop, maintain and stimulate pupils’ curiosity, interest and enjoyment in Science Allow pupils to develop transferable skills and informed opinions about their Science skills and be able to support them with reasoned argument. Encourage all teachers to see how Science and the curriculum link together. Support all staff in their need to develop confidence and strategies in using Science within their teaching. To recognise that INSET and support for staff are vital if pupils are to progress in Science capability. William Stukeley CE Primry School Policy for Science 1 Equal Opportunities and Inclusion We are committed to providing a teaching environment conducive to learning. Each child is valued, respected and challenged regardless of race, gender, religion, social background, culture or disability. Each child will have equal opportunity to participate in all activities. Please refer to the following policies: Special Educational Needs Gifted and Talented Race Equality Scheme The statutory requirements for Science require the children to have experience of the following areas – Sc1 – Scientific Enquiry Sc2 – Life Processes and Living Things Sc3 – Materials and their properties Sc4 – Physical Processes The general requirements of systematic enquiry, science in everyday life, nature of scientific ideas, communicating, health and safety will also be taught. Within each of these areas are a number of aspects. These aspects and when they are to be undertaken are indicated in the school’s curriculum framework. All aspects for Sc1, planning experimental work, obtaining evidence and considering evidence will be encouraged whenever possible. The aspects for Sc1 should be involved in every investigation. Wherever applicable children will use ICT to support their science work and wherever possible the science work will develop the curricular themes of Health Education, the environment and the children’s personal and social development. Health and Safety requirements In their planning of activities, teachers will anticipate likely safety issues. They will also explain the reasons for safety measures and discuss any implications with the children. Children should always be encouraged to consider safety issues for themselves, others, the environment and the resources they use when undertaking activities. William Stukeley CE Primry School Policy for Science 2 Assessment Foundation Stage will be assessed against pupil profiles. KS1 and KS2 Teacher will assess pupils against Lincs Grids at the end of each unit. Teachers will develop their use of APP with groups of children. KS2 pupils will be assessed at the end of KS2 by teacher assessment and past papers.Assessment will be based on observation, discussion and product where appropriate. Links with other subjects It is important to find time in other subject areas for pupils to develop and apply their Science skills. For example: measuring and data handling in numeracy and report writing in literacy. Resources Provision for appropriate teaching and learning materials, where equipment may be borrowed and returned, is made through a central, communal store. These resources are kept under review and teacher requirements are met as quickly as circumstances allow. The Science resources include both commercially produced schemes of work and Science equipment including everyday objects of mathematical relevance to the topics being undertaken. Role of Subject Leader • Ensure that all teachers are familiar with the policy and help them to plan lessons if necessary • Lead by example in the way that Science is taught in your own classroom • Prepare, organise and lead INSET when necessary with the support of the Head Teacher • Work co-operatively with the SENCo • Monitor the learning within the school for Science and record your findings in writing for the class teachers’ information • Inform the Leadership Team about overall strengths and weaknesses of the subject • Write an action plan each year that will feature in the School Improvement Plan when necessary • Inform Governors of the progress that has been made each year William Stukeley CE Primry School Policy for Science 3 • Inform the Leadership Team of any resources that would significantly enhance the subject each year during February in preparation for the development of the School Budget • Discuss regularly with the Head Teacher the progress towards implementing this policy orchanging it • Maintain links to Specialist Schools Link team to maximise use of resources and share cost of training Role of Head Teacher Lead, manage and monitor the implementation of this policy Monitor the quality of learning through work scrutiny and lesson observations conducted by the subject leader and themselves With the Science governor, keep the governing body informed about the progress of the Strategy Ensure that mathematics remains a high profile in the school’s development work Deploy support staff to maximise the support for this policy Approved by Chair of SDC Committee: __________________________________ Approved by Chair of Governors __________________________________ Date: __________________________________ Date for review: March 2013 William Stukeley CE Primry School Policy for Science 4
