Research highlights
Alternative lighting-technologies can reduce salmon early maturation. Lightintensity appears to be the critical factor of any lighting-technologies. Maturation
minimal when nocturnal plasma melatonin reduced to 1.2-fold of day-time. Optimal
artificial-illumination using 0.28 Wh m−3 generating 0.012 W m−2 in a cage. Costbenefit of light regime can be optimised when using the right technology.

Research highlights
Fish distribution (Danio rerio) in rectangular and circular tanks is compared. Fish
distribution is more heterogeneous in rectangular tank with multiple waterfalls. Fish
tend to occupy the first part of rectangular tank, where turbulence is higher. In
circular tank (tangential inlet) fish occupation increases from centre to wall.

► A 71.43 kDa heat shock protein was cloned from clam Meretrix meretrix. ► The
heat shock protein obtained is a member of hsc70 subfamily and was designated as
MmeHsc71. ► Quantitative immunofluorescence and RT-PCR examination were
used to detect the expression changes of MmeHsc71 in response to vibrio-challenge.
► The elevated mRNA and protein levels of MmeHsc71 after vibrio-challenge
suggested the immune-related function of MmeHsc71 in M. meretrix.

Research highlights
► Regulatory T cell marker gene Foxp3 of Atlantic salmon is cloned and
characterised. ► Foxp3 is highly expressed in thymus. ► Foxp3 mRNA expression
is modulated in leukocytes by mitogens and β-glucan. ► Foxp3 mRNA expression is
increased in the head kidney after Aeromonas salmonicida infection. ► Transfection
of CHSE-214 cells with salmon Foxp3 fused with a C-termial RFP tag, resulted in the
expression of the transgene in and close to the nuclei upon stimulation.

Research Article

articles
PDF (597 K) | Related articles | Related reference work
Research Highlights
►We study the suitability of calcein as in situ growth marker in burrowing bivalves.
►We test how calcein concentration affects marking success and bivalve
performance. ►Marking success increases with higher calcein concentrations and
decreases with age. ►No detrimental effects are detected when using calcein
concentrations ≤ 200 mg l−1. Our in situ marking method seems suitable for growth
studies on burrowing bivalves.

Research Highlights
► Predatory fish use sand edges adjacent to seagrass more than the seagrass
interior. ► Prey species use the interior of seagrass patches more than seagrass
edges. ► Predation can be lower at seagrass patch interior. ► Seagrass habitat
edges can have higher rates of predation than patch interior. ► Few predators were
observed at night.

Research Highlights
► How will hyperthermal juvenile fishes respond to sea temperature increases? ►
Juvenile marine fishes acclimated near vertebrate's upper thermal limit (40–41 °C).
► CTMaximum values ≥ 43.8 °C. ► Mullet and terapon inhabit shallow nursery
habitats (mangroves and seagrasses). ► Fishes from these environments may
respond more robustly to increased temperatures.

Research highlights
► Thermal limits were higher in 3 °C rather than 0 °C incubated Nacella concinna. ►

Research highlights
► Studies on virus-mediated cell lysates show no siderophores are present. ► A
catecholate siderophore was isolated from Vibrio alginolyticus. ► Voltammetry
suggests the siderophore was consistent with typical L1 Fe-binding ligands. ►
Materials in cell lysates were consistent with L2 Fe-binding ligands. ► Fe in lysates
was more rapidly assimilated than Fe bound to the siderophore.

► Temperature and diet affected δ13C and δ15N turnover and discrimination. ►
Evidence for growth being the main contributor to isotope turnover. ► No significant

Research Highlights
► A quantitative and rapid detection method for rotavirus in water samples was
developed using immunomagnetic separation combined with quantitative RT-PCR
(IMS-RT-qPCR). ► Compared to extracting RNA using commercial kits, the IMS
increased the detection sensitivity by about one order of magnitude from clean water.
Aquaculture Journals
Page: 69 of 87
► The IMS-RT-qPCR was also successfully applied to purify and detect rotavirus
seeded in 103-fold concentrated wastewater influents. ► The results of present study
indicated that IMS-RT-qPCR is a rapid, sensitive and reliable tool for detecting
rotaviruses in complex water environments.
