PERFORMANCE
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Reduce Basic Inventory interval. Basic inventory in general does
not put an extended strain on a computer system. On a test system it
would take the processor utilization from 7 –10 percent to 100 percent
for a period of about two seconds. Memory usage would also
fluctuate by a couple hundred KB for that period of time. The default
(recommended) setting for basic inventory is once per 24 hours.
Extend this out if once every 24 hours is not necessary.
2. Reduce Frequency of Inventory. Inventory, and in particular
Software Inventory, will put the biggest strain on the client over a 5 –
10 minute interval depending upon the software inventory
configuration and amount of data to scan. A full scan can be
scheduled to run monthly, and hardware, software, and user delta
scans can be configured to run more frequently depending on your
needs.
Auditplus uses 20–60 percent CPU Utilization. The average is
approximately 32 percent and lasts minutes depending upon the size
of drive and the amount of data on the drive (it was found to be 5
minutes 20 seconds during testing). AeXMachInv.exe runs for
another two to three minutes.
3. Schedule frequency for off hours. There are two schedule settings
that will determine how the task will run.
Run as soon as possible after the scheduled ti me.
Only run at a scheduled time.
If the task is configured to “Run as soon as possible after the
scheduled time” and if the computer happened to be turned off
during the scheduled time, the task will fire as soon as it can after
startup.
You can configure the task so that it runs only at the scheduled
time. The only problem with this setting is if the user is accustomed
to turning off the computer at the end of the workday, the task may
never get the opportunity to run.
Note: Inventory (User) must be configured to run when a user in
logged on.

4. Reduce redundancies in inventory tasks. Below are the program
definitions for each of the Inventory tasks:

Notice that each task runs aexmachinv.exe and aexcustinv.exe. There is
also an overlap of aexsnplus.exe between the hardware, software, and
full inventory processes. These .ini files can be modified to reduce these
redundancies thus reducing unnecessary load on the clients.
5. Minimize the number of status events. The NS can be configured
to allow the Altiris Agent to send various types of status events as
shown in the screenshot below:
These events are used for reporting purposes. Minimize the number
of status events being generated and sent based upon the your
reporting needs.
6. Minimize the number of applications being monitored by Application
Metering.

By default, Application Metering is configured to track “All
Applications” and all “MS Office Suite” applications. This monitoring,
particularly if start and stop events are enabled, can cause
megabytes of data to be generated and sent from the client
computers to the server. It is recommended only to monitor those
applications you are particularly interested in or disable the sending
of the start and stop events if all applications need monitoring and
rely on the App Metering Inventory Summary data.
7. Use package mode in your software inventory scan. Software
inventory can be configured to run in package mode or file mode.
Package mode reports on the first instance of a particular application
and ignores all other files referencing that application. In most cases
you are only interested in knowing what “applications” are installed —
not what each and every file is for an application.

File mode is enabled by using the /files switch on the
AeXAuditPls.exe command line or by configuring each of the special
groups properties individually as shown in the screen shot below.
8. Limit the types of applications you are scanning for. By default
Software Inventory is configured to scan only for executables. It can
be configured to scan for .dll files, .ocxs, and so on. The more types
of files scanned for, the greater the load and duration of the software
scan.

9. Use blockouts to prevent communication of agents during
business hours. Blocks will not prevent tasks from running on the
client, however. They will only prevent the communication of the
Altiris Agent and the NS. Scheduled processes should still run. NSEs
will be queued up until communication is again established.
10. Run Solutions in zero foot print mode. A few of the solutions,
including Inventory Solution, can be installed and run on the client
computers without having the Altiris Agent installed.

the Inventory Solution 5.5 processes versus the Inventory Solution
6.1 product.
