How big a dog will this puppy become?
How active a dog will this puppy become?
Should I get a puppy or an adult dog?
Why was this breed of dog developed; what was it originally
bred to do?
Does this breed have special needs, such as professional
grooming?
What temperament and intelligence is typical of this breed?
What genetic and health problems may affect this breed?
How much does it typically cost to buy, feed, and raise a dog
of this breed?
Are there important differences between males and females
of this breed?
Have I spent time with puppies, adults, and older dogs of
this breed?
Can the breeder provide me with the appropriate paper
work to register the dog with the American Kennel Club?
The decision to bring a dog into your life is one you will live with
for years. Careful consideration before you make your decision will
help ensure the happiness of both you and your dog!

AKC Dog Clubs In Washington
There are nearly 5000 dog clubs in the United States that hold affiliated events under the umbrella of the AKC for competition by AKC registered
dogs. Some are national parent clubs, others local specialty clubs, and still others are devoted to a broad variety of events from agility to obedience and
tracking, from field trials to lure coursing and herding tests and trials. Many clubs meet monthly, others bi-monthly, and yet others more infrequently.
All were formed by a diverse group of dog lovers who share the common interest of raising, training, breeding and competing with purebred dogs.
These clubs not only further the sport of purebred dogs, but also many strive to promote and protect dogs in their communities, share in educational
programs, sponsor training classes and health clinics, and operate a rescue network, as well as responsible breeder locator service.

ALPHABETICAL LISTING OF BREEDS
Always ask before you pet a dog. The handlers (people showing dogs) spent a lot of
time and energy grooming their dogs for the show. Never go up and just pet a dog.
Ask first.
Wait until handlers have finished an event before asking questions. Before the show,
they are focusing on their dog and getting ready for their turn in the ring. Always
ask permission before petting a dog!
Turn off your cell phone. It is a distraction to the dogs and handlers.
Stay away from ring entrances. It is very difficult for handlers to get in and out of
the rings when people are in the way of the entrance.
Do not lean over the rings or talk to handlers when they are in the ring showing.
Do you have small children with you? Don’t let them run up to dogs or stick their
fingers and hands into crates or exercise pens. Also, it’s best to leave strollers in the
car. Strollers can place a child’s face at the same level as unfamiliar dogs’ faces. Plus,
a stroller can accidentally run over lots of dogs’ tails.
Be careful where you step so you don’t step on feet, noses or tails!
Keep food away from the ring. It is a distraction to the dogs.
Leave your own dog at home unless you are taking them
for a special reason, such as a CGC® test.
Enjoy the show!

First-aid Starter Kit
Keeping a first-aid kit close by can be handy in case your dog has an accident, gets
a cut or eats something that could make it sick. The suggested materials listed
below are intended to assist you with the basic first aid. If possible, always immediately contact a veterinarian when you suspect your dog is injured. He or she can
guide you through the initial steps of basic first aid, such as slowing bleeding or
inducing vomiting, until you can get to the veterinarian’s office.

AKC EVENTS AT THESE SHOWS
Conformation RINGS 1-12 – Dog shows, or “conformation” events, are the signature events of the AKC. Exhibits are judged against breed standards, which have been established for the AKC-recognized breeds by their parent clubs.
These written standards describe the ideal size, color, and temperament of each breed, as well as correct proportion, structure, and movement.
Obedience RINGS 21-22 – Obedience Trials test a dog’s ability to perform a prescribed set of exercises on
which it is scored. In each exercise, the dog must score more than 50% of the possible points and get a total score of at least
170 out of a possible 200. Each time the dog gets that magic 170 qualifying score, he’s earned a “leg” towards his title. Three
legs and the dog has become an Obedience Titled dog! There are 3 levels at which a dog can earn a title and each is more
difficult than the one before it.
Rally RING 23 – Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler compete through a course of designated stations.
Rally provides a link from the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) program to obedience or agility competition, both for dogs and
handlers. In addition, rally promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs at all levels of competition.
Agility RING 31– Agility is the ultimate game for you and your dog. It is also one of the most exciting canine sports
for spectators. In agility, a dog demonstrates its agile nature and versatility by following cues from the handler through a
timed obstacle course. The course has jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and other obstacles. Agility strengthens the bond between dogs and handlers, it is extremely fun, and it provides vigorous exercise for both!

In addition to their work keeping

Freestyle Dancers
Musical freestyle Canine Dancing is a relatively new sport that
combines dog obedience and dance
in a way that is totally unique and
exciting. It blends dog obedience
and dance presenting a visually exciting display of handler and canine
teamwork. The handler and dog
perform dance-oriented footwork in
time to the music.

Seattle Police
Department Canine UNIT
For the past 40 years, highly
trained Seattle Police canines have
been patrolling the streets of your
city on a nightly basis.
Our Generalist Patrol Dogs have
located thousands of criminals that
would have otherwise gotten away.
Our Narcotics Detection Dog
teams have helped take millions of
dollars worth of drugs of the streets
and have seized millions of dollars
in illegally obtained property.
Since being provided by the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms, our Explosives Detection
Dog has instilled peace of mind and
helped make the region safer.
Four of our most recent canines
were purchased by the Seattle
Police Foundation and one by the
Milkbone Corporation.
When our dogs reach retirement
age they live out the rest of their
lives with their officer-handlers.
As K9 senior citizens, most require
veterinary care for injuries or wearand-tear received while serving your
community.
Since the Seattle Police Department no longer pays for that care,
members of the Canine Unit formed
a non-profit corporation to collect

The team is made up of Mixed
Breeds, Purebreds and Shelter
Rescues ranging in age from nine
months to twelve years old, all working together in close order drill to
demonstrate the benefits of training
for ALL dogs and to encourage
others to train their dogs and join
in the FUN of being a responsible
dog owner.

The F.I.D.O. Drill Team chose to
use a Semi-Military marching style
as a show of respect to their canine
cousins working across the US and
around the world in partnership
with Police and Military units to
keep them safe. The Team’s Wagging
Tails are their way of saying Thank
You!

K9 nose work
demonstration team
See a demonstration of the newest and fastest growing dog sport
for the very first time at the Seattle
Kennel Club Dog Show. This exciting
and inclusive detection-style activity
is appropriate for dogs of any age,
breed, size, or physical ability and
handlers of all ages and abilities.
K9 Nose Work has been featured
in the August 2009 issue of The
Whole Dog Journal, the June
2010 issue of Bark Magazine, the
November/December 2010 issue of
The APDT Chronicle – the Seattle
Kennel Club website http://www.
seattlekennelclub.org/i-get-it-and-itall-makes-scents/ The Seattle Times
http://o.seattletimes.nwsource.com/
html/localnews/2012881334_nosework13m.html - as well as having
been presented at national professional dog training conferences.
The sport of K9 Nose Work was
first developed in 2008 by a retired
police K9 trainer and two of his
cohorts. Some of the many benefits
include deepening the owner/dog
relationship while expending the
dogs’ excess energy, and putting
their minds to work in a sport that
can be taught and practiced indoors
with minimal needs for equipment (recycled cardboard boxes)
and space. Dogs leave class happy
and tired while their owners leave
amazed at what the dogs can do.
K9 Nose Work provides an
energetic and focused outlet for any
dog. The sport also brings special
benefits for dogs with issues such as
lack of confidence or focus, overly
reactive around other dogs and/or
people, dogs convalescing from
medical issues, generalized social or
situational anxiety preventing them
from joining a typical group training
class, hearing or sight impairments,
and retired conformation, competition, service, or working dogs in
need of a ‘job’ to keep them busy
and happy. K9 Nose Work has been
shown to improve dogs’ performance in other dog sports.
In September 2009 Miriam Rose
first brought K9 Nose work to Washington State. As Washington’s first
Certified Nose Work Instructor (and
a professional K9 detection trainer/
handler), she offers weekly classes
at numerous conveniently located
regional training centers in Western
Washington. Four levels of classes
keep owners and dogs progressing
at each team’s individual pace.
Exciting Northwest and national
competitions have already been
held and more are in the planning
stages. Come and join the fun with
your dog!
“Bringing the sport of K9 Nose
Work to the Pacific Northwest, one
happy dog at a time.”

Demonstration of the
AKC’s Canine Good Citizen
(CGC) Program
Started in 1989, the CGC Program is designed to reward dogs
who have good manners at home
and in the community. The Canine
Good Citizen Program is a two-part
program that stresses responsible
pet ownership for owners and basic
good manners for dogs. It is open to
all dogs, regardless of heritage. All
dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test
may receive a certificate from the
American Kennel Club.
AKC Certified CGC Evaluator
Julene Cooper, Family Dog staff and
students will demonstrate the basic
obedience exercises and good manners that dogs (and their handlers)
need to earn the title of Canine
Good Citizen, discuss techniques
for training dogs to pass the test
and show how these skills apply to
everyday life.
Family Dog Training Center is
one of several facilities in the area
offering classes and workshops that
help owners prepare to take the
test. Family Dog also offers CGC
testing on a regular basis. These
tests are open to everyone.
Solving Dog Behavior
Problems
Kathy Lang, President of Family
Dog Training Center, will share
her 34 years of experience training
dogs and educating owners as she
discusses solutions to common
dog behavior problems. Kathy will
address problems such as chewing,
barking, digging, stealing, nipping,
mouthing, jumping up, separation
anxiety, housebreaking, running
away, pulling on the leash, not coming when called and more.
According to Lang, “Unresolved
behavior problems are one of the
leading reasons owners give for
turning their dogs in to animal shelters or rescue organizations. This
workshop is designed to help pet
owners understand why their dogs
do what they do and give a long list
of options for resolving their dogs’
misbehavior.”
