• Read your UCD email – at least once/week
o For campus and BASC announcements
o First year required advising
o Class updates
• Attend class
o Read the syllabus
o Actively participate
o Devote appropriate time to each class (Carnegie Rule from Dean’s
meeting)

Planning for Fall schedule
Things to consider:
• Advanced Placement (AP) credits
o Check AP chart in Orientation handbook, page 38
• Community College Units
• Complete lower division (0-99) courses before upper
division (100-199)
• Balance schedule with 1 - 2 sciences (maximum) & 1-3
non-sciences courses = 13-15 units
• Waitlisted?
o Can only waitlist during Pass 2 registration
o Make sure you attend the 1st day of class/discussion/lab
o Keep checking Sisweb to see if you’ve been added to the class.
Planning for Fall schedule
Accelerated BIS 2A course for Fall 2014
• For students with a strong foundation in: metabolism,
heredity and cell structure. Admission into the
accelerated course is by examination.
• Taking the placement exam is optional:
9am in 123 Sci Lec on Day 2 of Orientation.
• This is a pilot course and may not be offered again next fall
• If you are undecided  take the exam
• If you rank highly with the exam, you will be notified by
early August (not when you first register for classes).
• Honors students and Regent Scholars are exempt from the
exam
Full-time vs.
Minimum Progress (MP)
• Full-time = 12 units per quarter
• MP = 39 per year (average 13 per quarter)
• Workload (Wld) classes (example: WLD 41C, WLD
57E)
o Count towards MP, full-time status and financial
aid
o DO NOT count towards graduation unit
requirement
o Do not appear in registration billing hours, but are
calculated in the unit total for the quarter
Preparatory Core Curriculum
• Preparatory Core Curriculum requirements are
the same for all Bachelor of Science degrees
o MATH (MAT)
o 17A, 17B, 17C (or 21AB*)
o General CHEMISTRY (CHE)
o 2A, 2B, 2C
o BIOLOGY (BIS)
o 2A, 2B, 2C
o Organic CHEMISTRY (CHE) *
o 8AB or 118ABC or 128ABC+129AB
o PHYSICS (PHY)
o 7A, 7B, 7C (or 9ABCD*)
*Series choices dependent on your major requirements and career objectives
Math Series Differences
• CBS majors require MAT 17ABC or MAT 21AB
o (21C is recommended by some majors)
• MAT 17ABC: students are given applications of calculus in
problems related to health and biological sciences.
o Encouraged if you are serious about continuing in a science or
health career
• MAT 21AB(C): students derive equations and do proofs
o MAT 21ABC is a series for biological and physical science majors
o Students wishing to continue into higher level mathematic
courses; Chemical Physics, Physics, Engineering majors
• Medical/health schools accept either series.
Math Placement
• Your placement scores indicate which math
course you are ready to take
o See ONLINE handout – CHEM & MATH & BIS Registration
• We generally do not recommend skipping MAT
17A/21A with an equivalent AP/IB score.
o Why?
o It is better to get a solid foundation and a high grade on
the transcript than jump forward
o AP classes are NOT the same as UCD math classes
o Many professional schools require a year of calculus on
your COLLEGE transcript and do not apply AP credit
toward that year
Chemistry Placement
• CHE 2A requires you to pass BOTH the Chemistry
placement exam AND the Math placement exam (to
at least Math 12)
o Students who do not achieve required scores on one or both of these
exams must prepare to retake the exams in order to start CHE and
MAT freshmen year
o See math and chemistry department websites for dates
• Workload Chemistry (WLD 41C)
o Take if you did not place into CHE 2A or do not feel prepared for it.
o ONLY offered in Fall quarter
o IF YOU NEED THIS CLASS, PLEASE REGISTER FOR IT IF SPACE IS
AVAILABLE. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THE CLASS AGAIN
UNTIL FALL 2015.
You will not be “behind” or jeopardize graduation in four years if you do not
start CHE 2A in fall quarter. But we do encourage all of our students to get
started in CHE (that includes 41C) and MAT in the first year.

(MAT is replaced by BIS 2A this qtr

(only take three major courses if
achieved "B" level grades in
previous major courses)
We recommend all students achieve
CHE 2A and MAT 17A/21A placement
level before taking BIS 2A.
We do not recommend BIS 2A, CHE
and MAT in one quarter.
If you are planning to retake the
placement exams at the beginning of
fall (or any quarter), you must
register for and attend alternative
courses on the chance you do not
pass to the correct level. You will be
dropped from CHE and MAT if scores
are insufficient.
If CHE 2B is completed in spring
quarter, you must register for CHE 2C
in fall quarter or earlier; the next
time CHE 2C is offered is in spring
quarter of your sophomore year –
this will hinder you from starting your
organic chemistry series within a
reasonable timeframe.
