MUC: More quantity, more quality
Munich, July 2010
Dear Sir or Madam,
The latest figures speak for themselves: The crisis is over.
Munich Airport has again succeeded in posting air cargo results around the level of its
boom year 2008. MUC shipped a total of 126,900 tons in the first half of 2010 – 27% more than
in the same period of the previous year.
The increase in quantities is accompanied by a sharp leap in quality. International carriers have
decided in favour of Munich in 2010:
• Continental Airlines has been flying daily to Newark with a Boeing 767 since March 28.
That means there are now a total of three non-stop flights to Big Apple every day.
• Singapore Airlines has likewise been flying the Manchester-Munich-Singapore route since the
end of March with a Boeing 777 and will soon offer a daily service.
• Lufthansa has recently started flying three times a week to Miami with an Airbus 330.
• Last but not least, All Nippon Airways included Munich in its intercontinental flight network on
July 1. It flies daily with a Boeing 777 from Munich to Tokyo (NRT).

An opportunity and challenge – the e-freight initiative
Munich Airport plays a key role in constantly expanding the global
network of e-freight stations. The e-freight initiative is to be implemented at MUC by the end of this year.
But what does e-freight mean and where does it come from? IATA’s
e-freight initiative is the foundation for future innovations in the air
cargo industry. Its aim is to reduce three types of documentation for
the transport chain:
• Trade documents
• Transport documents
• Customs documents
Reducing the volume of paper documents by up to 64% – and by that CO2 emissions – will enable the
industry to improve its performance and cut costs.
All German stations will join that initiatives by the end of 2010. They include: CGN, DUS, FRA, HAM, LEJ,
MUC, NUE, STR and TXL.
The worldwide stations planned for e-freight include DXB, HKG, JFK, NRT, SIN and YVR so as to ensure
seamless global freight consignments by customers in the future.
IATA’s e-freight initiative is being further developed with the introduction of the “eAWB” (electronic air
waybill) scheduled from 2011 to 2015. It will completely replace the paper AWB. You can find more information about IATA e-freight at: www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/efreight/.
