Easter Sunday, the patients in the mental health unit were able to alleviate some of those symptoms of stress by engaging in therapeutic recreation activities. The patients dyed Easter eggs which, of course, lead to making deviled eggs! These experiences allowed patients of varying ages and backgrounds the opportunity to reminisce and to engage in positive interactions with each other. Recollection allows a person to reflect and recapture special events in their lives. Therefore, at a time when patients are struggling to find the positives in life, therapeutic recreation opens the door. Connecting to others through shared experiences increases self-esteem and validates feelings, which allows for an overall increase of personal self-worth. Jocelyn Jones, CTRS Recreation Therapist Share Pizza With Pam This is your opportunity to meet over lunch with Pam Delagardelle to talk about what’s happening at UnityPoint Health in general and Allen in particular. Luncheons are open to all Allen associates. Each luncheon is small – only 12 people – so everyone will have a chance to talk. The setting is relaxed, the food will be great and we’ll pick up the tab. The definition from the Beryl Institute says it’s the sum of all interactions, shaped by an organizations culture that influences patients’ perceptions across the continuum of care. We want you to know we appreciate all your hard work and all your efforts because we know that YOU ARE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE. Celebrate your accomplishments and honor your team. You impact the patients experience every day. Thank you for all that you do. JoDee Knox The Patient Advocate Allen ICU Tower Celebrates 59 Years of Devotion Howard and Joy Saunders have been married a long, long time, but they still act like highschool sweethearts. They sit close to each other, they hold hands without even thinking about it and they share an easy, obvious affection that marks six decades of devotion. Howard has been an inpatient at Allen Hospital since April 11. Two weeks in the hospital can seem like two years, especially when you have a major wedding anniversary coming up. Now a 59th anniversary might not seem quite as major as, say, a 60th anniversary, but the only people who think that way haven’t lived long enough to know for sure. The truth is that every wedding anniversary matters. The more anniversaries you have, the more you realize how precious the remaining few will be. That idea wasn’t lost on the staff of ICU Tower. They all knew that Howard wouldn’t be discharged in time to dance with Joy on their anniversary April 24. But they also knew that the vow to love each other in sickness and in health still leaves room to love each other in the hospital, too. So that’s where the celebration was held. Amidst the balloons, the flowers, Joy’s corsage and the cake, there was barely enough room for the nurses, family and friends who all wanted to share the moment. Not that anybody minded much, of course. In sickness and in health is serious business, but faith, hope and love are powerful medicine – especially with a side order of cake. Howard and Joy gave us permission to share their story with you. So did their son Joe Saunders and his fiancée Angie Miller, also pictured here. Joe and Angie have their own wedding coming up in just a few days. We think they’ll be aiming for at least 60 years together. After all, that’s where Howard and Joy want to go, and they just may make it. It’s obvious they’re going to try. Last time we saw them, they were still holding hands, heading that direction. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month As April nears its end the Allen Child Protection Center (ACPC) continues to promote prevention of child abuse. During each appointment at the ACPC a child is offered a brand new toy to take home. All toys given to children seen at the ACPC are provided via donations from members of the community.
