We visited the City of Smiles, Bacolod, as the Association of Benedictine Schools held a 3-day student leadership congress which was participated by St. Scholastica’s Academy San Fernando, Holy Family Academy, Angeles City, St. Agnes’ Academy, Legaspi, St Scholastica’s Academy Bacolod and St Scholastica’s College, West Grove. We came with three of our supportive schools administrators, our principal, Sister Alexis Lamarroza, OSB, Mrs. Jeniffer Medina and Mrs. Concepcion Domeyeg. Day 1 (August 17). We were on board with St. Scholastica’s Pampanga. Upon arrival, students from St. Scholastica’s Bacolod welcomed us with bright smiles and a simple token. There was also a feast for all the participants. After that wonderful feast, each school presented their cheers. Then, we rode a bus to Holy Family Academy High School. There we had our tree planting activity believing that a great leader must also be good steward of God’s creation. Our effort in this activity was rewarded with a “merienda” which included delicious Bacolod BY KHALLYL CATALAN, 6 – PRUDENT AND AMBER NOELLE P. This is an example that St. Benedict lived by. Imagine yourself at his age, when he left his family, his school, and his nurse to live in the mountains and pray. He could have lived the most convenient life considering that he came from a wealthy family. But then, he chose to live his life in service of the Lord. Would you carry on the same mission? This year we celebrated the Feast of St. Benedict and reflected on how he lived his life and how we can live our lives through his examples. We also remembered him as a Man of Prayer. Chapter 20 of his rules says: Visual Artists Bianca Patricia A. Carranto Arianna Shay Zafra Photo Contributors Phos Club GS Department Moderators Ms. Charlotte Christie L. De Leon Mrs. Ciela Blanca L. Del Rosario Of reverence at prayer If, when we wish to bring anything to the notice of men in high station, we do not presume to do so except with humility and reverence, how much more ought we with all humility and purity of devotion to offer our supplication to the Lord God of all things? And let us remember that we shall be heard not because of much speaking, but for our purity of heart and tears of compunction. Therefore prayer ought to be short and pure, unless perchance it be prolonged by the inspiration of Divine Grace. In community, however, let prayer always be short, and at the signal given by the superior let all rise together. During the Mass presided by Father Anthony, OSB of San Beda College, he told us about how we need to strengthen our faith in Jesus. He said, “Prayer can keep this strong!” After the Mass, two students gave an outstanding performance. They sang “Wind Beneath My Wings.” We went back to our classrooms to have our food sharing and we played a few games. It may seem to be impossible to live by his example; however, all is possible when we do it with prayer. Parents’ Corner Mr. Ruel Galit speaks before the parent of SSAM. Parents closely listening during the symposium. Parents’ Awareness How to Promote Media on Morality Media Education at Home BY AMBER NOELLE P. CABALLERO, 6 - CHARITABLE As part of the Christian Life Program of St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina, the CLE (Christian Life Education) Area in cooperation with Daughters of Mary Immaculate organized a symposium for parents entitled, “Seminar on Parents’ Morality Media,” last September 19 at the Sister Imburg Covered Court. Mr. Ruel Garlit, a CLE teacher at Assumption Antipolo was the key speaker. He talked about the negative emotions that print and broadcast media portray. One of the things that he emphasized was how pornography affects the family. He said that it promotes unfaithfulness. It even distorts values of people and their perception on human sexuality. Yes! Media offer everything – entertainment, culture, news, sports and education. But then, some of what they offer may not be what we want our children to know and learn. Children nowadays are amazing. They can mimic a line of a movie or TV character and sing an advertising jingle in a matter of seconds. Sadly, this can be alarming. This may mean that they may also experience all kinds of messages by simply putting a movie into the VCR, scanning a magazine, and clicking a website or watching TV. They will surely be able to experience the good and the bad effects of media. Media is powerful. Its impact can be seen right away as children see and hear messages like fighting in order to resolve conflict, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcoholic beverages to appear cool and attractive without explaining how unhealthy it is. Therefore, the school and home must work together in guiding the students to become critical viewers. BY SOPHIA ISABELLE L. YU, 5 - PEACEFUL According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), parents can help their children in making better use of media by doing the following: 1. Making a media plan. In advance, set media time and choices. It helps everyone choose and use media carefully. 2. Setting media time limits. Children should observe a screen time set by their parents. They must be trained to observe their time for watching TV and DVD, playing computer and video games, and browsing the internet. AAP recommends no more than 1 to 2 hours of exposure to media per day. 3. Setting family guidelines for media content. Guide children and teens in choosing shows, movies and video games that are appropriate for their ages and interests. Parents can check on the content ratings and parental advisories for all media in order to know which is only suitable. They must be clear and consistent with whatever rules they set. 4. Keeping TV sets, DVDs, video games and computers out of children’s bedroom. Putting them out of their rooms will help you monitor their access. 5. Making media a family activity. Parents should use media and discuss what they see, hear and read with their children. They can help them analyze, question and challenge the meaning that they convey. 6. Voicing your opinion. Let those who set guidelines and profit from media know how you feel about the messages that they express. You can e-mail, write a formal letter or call them what you like and what you do not like. Dr. Ivan Fitzwater once said, “The future of the world is in my classroom today.” With this, we see teaching as an important vocation, a mission, critical to the continuous growth not just of an individual but of the society itself. The moment a person chooses to become a teacher, he or she is deciding to change not only his or her life but also others’. It affects not only the present or the future but infinity. With the teacher smiling before the students from Monday to Friday, it seems not obvious that he or she is tired knowing that it takes preparation before a teacher teaches a particular lesson with the syllabus making, lesson planning and even test construction. More than these things, teachers also address personal issues of students. It is really something that goes beyond the classroom; thus, we can say that we can never put specific job descriptions for him or her. It is simply whatever one can offer to the betterment of others. Last October 2, 2015 “A Tribute to Teachers” was held at Marriott Grand Ballroom, Newport City Complex, Pasay City. This event was sponsored by Bato Balani Foundation and Diwa Learning Systems, Inc. Some teachers from St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina joined the activity. Dr. Brian Vincent L. Metro Manila Prepared for The ‘Big One’ from page 1 The focus of the talk was to teach students as well as the entire St. Scholastica community to become more responsive, and perhaps more resilient to disasters and natural calamities. According to Ms. Garcia, an estimated 7.2-7.8 magnitude earthquake may likely hit Metro Manila and may cause damage to up to 102,971 structures; deaths of up to 18,782; injuries as high as 76,863 and displacement of 6 BAITANG around 68,619 families. Based on historical data, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) predicts that the “Big One” will be caused by the movement of the West Valley Fault. Hence, there is a need for those in the area to be especially prepared and vigilant. In her talk, Ms. Garcia highlighted the importance of knowing what to do in case of an emergency. This includes, among others, the checking of possible hazards, identification of safe indoor and outdoor places to go, possession of disaster supplies on hand, and development of a communication plan. Ms. Garcia also mentioned that emergency preparedness is a concerted effort of several agencies. For instance, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has recently conducted (July 30, 2015) its own metro-wide earthquake drill in order to assess people’s level of preparedness in case the “Big One” strikes. Government officials, workers, students and communities took part in order to prepare for a feared 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Photo from Mrs. Lauren Galang and Chelsie Lapie. BBY MS. JC CARABALLOS, SCIENCE TEACHER Day by day, we experience the undesirable consequences of environmental degradation human beings have set on this planet. To combat these adverse effects, Earth Day Network proclaimed its theme for this year, “It’s Our Turn to Lead.” This calls all citizens of the world to take action on tough issues, such as those that affect our health, our communities and our environment that put our planet’s future at stake. Improving the earth’s environment is becoming a more important task in our everyday lives. Due to ignorance and frequent carelessness, this is quickly becoming critical. As a response to this plea, a Science Area-led initiative recently allowed the SSAM community to take part in this worldwide effort as it celebrated the Ecology Month. The Science Area headed by the coordinator, Mrs. Lauren Galang, prepared activities for the whole month of September. Students’ Experiencing the Gyroscope at the Philippine Centrum. Students in the primary level also participated in the class quiz bee prepared by their respective science teachers. On the other hand, students in the intermediate level took part in a team quiz bee and on-the-spot poster making contest. The teachers also joined the celebration by preparing bulletin boards that aimed to awaken students’ appreciation and concern for the environment. The month-long celebration was culminated by an Interactive Exhibit held at the Sister Imburg Covered Court. With the idea that students should be life-long learners, their teachers should also continue their quest for professional development because teaching is a ‘no-joke’ profession. Meet the current Reading and Language 5 teacher and English Coordinator of the Intermediate Level, MRS. JONIDA J. SANTOS. She recently finished her Masters of Arts in Teaching Major in English Studies and Instruction at Roosevelt College Foundation Graduate School of Education. She took further studies because she believes that it is necessary for teachers to have professional growth for the benefit of their students. For her, the biggest challenge in graduate school was thesis writing. Taking a master’s course helps her in learning trends in education and in achieving accuracy in teaching the English language. She considers it an accomplishment to be able to apply these learnings in her roles as an English coordinator and an English teacher. On plans on taking a doctoral degree, she said that she will pursue it if ever the odds will be in her favor. In addition, she encourages her students to take up further studies in the future for them to become globally competitive and highly qualified in whatever field they will pursue. Interviewed by Alyana Marie D. Fabella, 5 – Courageous Of course, we cannot give what we do not have. This means that if teachers aspire to give more to their students, the more they should feed themselves with knowledge and skills which they will impart. They must seek for continuous learning, which can be possible not only through attending seminars, workshops and trainings, but also through seeking further studies to be at par with the trends of education. As the kinds of learners vary and change, teachers should be flexible. They should adapt and adjust to the demands of the society. St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina grants assistance to teachers who wish to pursue further studies in order to grow in their profession and ministry of teaching, thus enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency in the performance of their work. MRS. LUZVIMINDA CAÑETE has recently joined MS. TRIZA MANNAG the ranks of Scholastican teachers with Master’s Degree. In an interview, she shared that she always bears in mind the school’s motto, ‘Ora Et Labora’ or prayer and work in everything that she does. She completed her Master’s Degree in Education Major in Teaching in the Early Grades at Roosevelt College Foundation, Graduate School of Education. Her chosen degree is very useful not only in planning the curriculum but also in assessing the academic performance of the pupils particularly in the primary level. When asked about the most challenging experience she had while studying, she recalled her thesis writing days and said that tallying the results was difficult because it should be accurately done. Her plans to pursue a doctoral degree may have to wait and she jokingly said, “Sa tamang panahon.” She adds, a teacher should never stop learning and she quoted what Henry Ford once said, “Anyone who stops learning is old whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” Interviewed by Khallyl Amelia D. Catalan, 6 – Prudent Additions to the SSAM Family Teaching is a challenging job which involves many unique frustrations. But then, its rewards are immeasurable. Seeing students gain new insights, become more interested in a subject and learn about themselves, give teachers an incredible joy. Individuals who have a sense of service are attracted to teaching because they want to make a clear and tangible difference in the lives of others. This year, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina Grade School Department welcomes four new Benedictine educators: is a life mentor who likes observing, listening to problems and helping people. She recently finished Masters of Arts in Education Major in Guidance and Counseling. According to Ms Mannag, graduate school has helped her in performing her duties at work. She understands better the concerns of her students. So far, she considers seeing students ‘being able to cope with their pressures and problems,’ her biggest achievement. Aside from work, she makes sure that she also has time for family life and studies. Balance is what she considers a continuous battle. Time management, she adds is the key in keeping her do work well, meeting the demands of her studies and make time for her family. She intends to stay with SSAM for years to come and would love to be remembered by her students as a person who always smiles and makes them smile. Interviewed by Alexa Evangelina S. Fernandes,6 – Charitable Imulat Mo ang MUNTIng Mata: Isang Pagbisita sa mga Inmates Ms. Nathalie Josef B. Garcia “Continue to live life that is guided by the teachings of St. Scholastica and St. Benedict.” This 24-year-old life mentor is a graduate of BS Psychology from St. Joseph’s College Quezon City. She is currently assigned with K-Masinop, 1-Gentle, 1-Helpful, 1-Obedient, 1-Polite, and all grade four sections. This new face of Student Development Center loves swimming, reading, and designing dresses. She finds Scholasticans as kind and active people. Interviewed by Bianca Patricia A. Carranto, 6 – Prudent Ms. Arlyne Mae Emmanuelle A. Tiglao “Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to express your feelings.” Handling K-Masikap, 2-Humble, 2-Kind, 2-Thrifty, 2-Joyful, and the entire grade 3 level this year is a 23 year-old life mentor who is a graduate of BS Psychology from St. Joseph’s College Quezon City. Ms. Tiglao adores singing and has love for making handicrafts. When asked about how she felt about Scholasticans, she replied that they are polite and responsible young women. Interviewed by Bianca Patricia A. Carranto, 6 – Prudent Ms. Camille Destiny Cruz Ms. Cruz sees Math as the ability to turn a person’s mind upside-down. According to her, it could also make a person think out of the box. Finishing Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics at Roosevelt College Foundation, she pursued teaching after her graduation this year. She is aware that her chosen profession requires a lot of responsibility and patience. She is still eager to continue it because she knows that it is only through this that she will be able to impart knowledge and change the lives of many Filipino children. She believes that being a teacher at SSAM gives her not just the right training but also a different experience about how values should be taught. In the future, she plans to continue further studies in order to be the best Math teacher everyone would love to have. Interviewed by Arianna Shay Zafra, 4 – Sociable Ms. Beatriz Secondes Ms. Secondes is making a comeback to her alma mater, SSAM, where she studied from preparatory to high school. Her parents saw her potential in playing a bamboo flute when she was still in grade 3. She eventually learned playing other instruments like the recorder, guitar and metal flute. Because of her passion in music, she decided to take up Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Flute Emphasis at University of Santo Tomas. During her stay in the conservatory, she became a part of the UST Wind Orchestra and the UST Woodwind Ensemble. These gave her opportunities to perform at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Meralco Theater and Concert at the Park in Luneta. For her being a teacher at SSAM is an accomplishment because she is able to teach her fellow Scholasticans. She feels happy every time she sees them enjoying her class. Apart from teaching, she also wants to be a professional musician and concert flutist. A Call to Families Protect Your Home From Falling Apart. 7 WHERE THE GOOD NEWS SHINES around the metro Travelogue You can try these 7 places that the grade school students visited during their fieldtrip this year: Looking for fun? He cannot do anything when people stare at it. He has been homeschooled because of the many reconstructive surgeries he had required. After these are done, his parents decided that he goes back to school in fall beginning with fifth grade. kanyang kamatayan. The idea of being with people terrifies him. He wonders if he could fit in at school. Despite this, brave Auggie attends school and experiences what he expected. Many people laugh at him. Julian, a boy, leads the bully attacks. While this is the case, he makes two close friends, Summer and Jack. He successfully culminated the school year by making it to the Honor Roll. In addition, he also gets an award for courage at school, something that he does not understand. He says, “If they want to give me a medal for being me, I’ll take it.” The story ends with Auggie seeing himself just like any other ordinary kids, and people see him the same way, too. This book is engaging pulling the readers into their story as they find themselves affected by the journey of Auggie. Personally, it reminds me on the issue of bullying that happens in school. The main character is a reminder that no matter how people distract you with their unjust criticisms, one can stand up and show that he/she matters in this world. This is a must-read not only for pagsasakripisyo para sa kalayaan ng ating bayan. Sa likod naman ng magandang pagkakaganap ng mga aktor ay ang dalawang henyong manunulat, sina Henry Hunt Francia, and E.A. Rocha. Iniwan ng pelikulang ito ang isang malaking katanungan na sa tingin ko’y hangang sa ngayon ay ‘di parin nasasagot ng nakararami, “Bayan o sarili?” those who are being bullied but for those who do it. Let’s accept our differences! Regarding the Bathrooms BY ATASHA NICOLE P. DATU, 4- SOCIABLE (BOOK LOVERS CLUB) “Regarding the Bathrooms” is the fourth book of the “Regarding” Series. The story happened during the summer months, when all of the sixth grade students attended summer class and work as volunteers in the community. The principal of the school, Wally Russ was pressured because of the forthcoming convention of principals and administrators. But then, before this, he wanted to renovate the disgusting bathrooms in the basement. He enlisted these students attending the summer class to help him and hired Florence Waters, a famous decorator, who unfortunately happened to be on vacation. Meanwhile, on June 2, there were two prisoners who were on the loose with a human mole hiding them. They were found guilty of fraud, greed, weasle-like conduct and slimy business practices for their role in capping of Geyser underneath Geyser Creek School. Unexpectedly, some students discovered unusual-looking ancient coins which they sent to Interpol, an investigation unit. Hugh Dunit, the head of the unit, informed them that what they uncovered were rare artifacts that might be connected with the activities of the crooks. The students were so brilliant because while working hard for their summer internships, they still had time and energy to act like detectives hoping to capture the prisoners. While doing these, they also accomplished the task entrusted by the principal to them. Before the story ended, the convicts were caught and sent back to prison. This book will not only take one to the new heights of bathroom humor but to its depths. It covers subjects like toilets, flushes, constipation and bowel movements in a both subtle and not-so-subtle ways. If you don’t mind these, then, borrow a copy of this from the school library! Best Friends Forever BY ZANDEA VILLOSO, 5 – COURAGEOUS I barely knew anybody on the first day of school Besides you, but when I step inside. I think you don’t even remember the things I did with you. For you, I am just a stranger, For me, you are a friend. For you, I am no one. For me, you are someone. I trust in you. Do you trust me, too? I believe in you. Do you believe in me, too? Before, your frowns became smiles. Your byes became hi. I hope you still remember the fun times we had. You are a friend and you’ll always. You are the light. You light up my world. No matter what happens, I’ll be there. If you are sad, Just remember these, And you’ll be glad. 10 P The Little Blue Star Pop Culture y o in NI LOREEN GABRIELLE C. QUEJADA, 4 - SOCIABLE The Aldub Fever Sinong may sabi na ang mga Koreano lamang ang may K-Pop? Expedition” sponsored by the National Geographic Channel Progress Pre-school Gold last July 8 at the Mind Museum. Rheann Daphne Marasigan and Raissa Palacol of 2 – Humble represented the school to the said competition. Both enjoyed the experience since they had a video and photo shoot at Fox International Channel’s office last July 4 prior to the big event. On the same day, they also had a briefing on what is going to happen during the competition. This also gave them an opportunity to bond with other contestants. In July 8, full support was given by the SSAM community as Mrs. Jennifer Medina and Mrs. Luzviminda Cañete came to the venue. The competition itself was packed with activities that the kids while learning really enjoyed. Daphne and Raissa competed in a BODY, BRAIN and PEOPLE SMART challenge, were three stations, each targeting the different aspects of intelligence. The first station tested their interpersonal skills as they were challenged to build a mini playground. In the second station, they were asked to answer series of questions which put the brain smarts into test. Lastly, the mini-obstacle course set up in the third station targeted the kinesthetic skills of the kids. Both of them did a really great job in all three stations winning special prize for the school while Daphne herself was given the Brain Smart award. The entire SSAM community is truly proud. Arnis: A Move to Self-Defense BY ALYANA MARIE D. FABELLA, 5-COURAGEOUS On July 30, 2015, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina had Arnis Clinic for a self-defense tutorial sponsored by Magic Flakes. An Arnis coach, Daniel Paras, taught the basic movements of this sport while volunteers from Sports Club were tagged along to demonstrate how this is done. In order to know more about Arnis, the coach gave few fun facts and a Question and Answer followed. What is Arnis? Arnis is a Filipino martial art, famous even to the Spanish. But when the Americans came, the Filipinos were in awe with their culture, and most inborn cultures were banished. Arnis disappeared in the urban areas and was preserved in the provinces by the traditional maestros or grandmasters. As foreign martial arts began to gain popularity, so did Arnis. Many people suddenly became interested in the art. However, practicing of the art had its problems as there were many different techniques, depending on the location. In 1975, the National Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL) was formed by Gen. Fabian C. Ver. This was the first national organization for Arnis in our country. However, it vanished after the change in the government caused by the Philippine Revolution of 1986. For now, popular groups have been busy advertising the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) and sports, in many parts of the Coach Daniel Paras demonstrating the basics of Arnis to the Scholasticans. world. Some have successfully progressed into martial arts schools, police academies, military schools, educational institutions, government agencies, and even in the entertainment world. Celine Vitamins, a known brand of vitamins for kids, also came and gave free sample of their products.
