Obama, Romney Resume Campaign after Colorado Shooting
KRISTEN WELKER, reporting:
After pausing to pay tribute to the victims of the Aurora, Colorado shootings, President Obama and Mitt
Romney cautiously got back on the campaign trail Monday.
President Obama kicked off a previously scheduled west coast swing with a speech at the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Convention, in Reno Nevada, addressing veteran voters, a key demographic. The President
toted as what he sees his military accomplishments, such as ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and
killing Osama Bin Laden. He also announced a few new programs, including a website that will list
veterans’ military awards, to cut down on those who lie about receiving honors.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Four years ago I made you a promise. I pledged to take the fight to our
enemies, and renew our leadership in the world. As president, that’s what I’ve done.
WELKER: In 2008 Mr. Obama lost the veterans vote by ten points to Republican John McCain. This year
veterans could be key in battleground states such as Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia.
And while both campaigns have temporarily suspended their negative TV ads in Colorado, there’s no
doubt that things are getting back to normal. President Obama criticized Republicans, accusing them of
playing politics over military spending cuts. Meanwhile, Romney spoke to business leaders in California
and criticized the President for not meeting with his jobs council in six months.
Former Governor MITT ROMNEY: In the last six months, he’s done 109 fundraisers. He’s found time for
that. I’d suggest between the fundraisers, get together with the jobs council and learn from people who are
working hard to create jobs.
WELKER: Mitt Romney will address the VFW here in Reno on Tuesday before heading overseas to
Britain, Poland and Israel. President Obama will spend the next two days raising money on the west coast
before heading to New Orleans to address the Urban League. Traveling with the President in Reno,
Nevada this is Kristen Welker, NBC News.
