"I love puppy mills ~ Satan"
This, I have to admit, was my favorite sign at the recent puppy
mill auction I helped to protest at recently. The auction was at
an auction house in Thorp, Wisconsin. Like any public auction,
you have to buy a number for bidding and then get a program.
The program had a listing of the puppies so you can follow
along and find what breed you want to bid on. It reminded me
of being at Assumption’s Royal Event auction and waiting to
bid on Brewer tickets. Each one of the puppies had a number
and was brought forward to the podium one at a time, much
like the Brewer tickets at the Royal Event. The auctioneer
would announce the number, the breed, and that it had been
"checked out." The auctioneer would then tell of any defects
in the puppy. The bidding would then commence. The bidding
went from $60 to $1,000 dollars on different breeds in the
short time that I watched. Pregnant moms, of course, went for
higher numbers, as more moneymaking puppies would be born
soon. On the outside of the auction property, along a county
highway, many cold but strong-willed protesters marched along
the road with signs like "Ban puppy mills," "End the abuse,”
and the one I mentioned above. Watching man’s best friend
being treated like Brewers tickets (or a chair, or painting) was
hard. What was harder, however, was knowing where puppies
like the ones at this auction can come from. These puppies are
actually the "lucky" ones who might make it to good homes.
Their parents, the breeding dogs, are not so lucky.
It was evening on Wednesday, March 5th that we found
out from one of the Wood County Humane Officers (who
both do an excellent job) that we would be going to retrieve
approximately 85 surrendered small breed dogs the next
morning. My staff and I scrambled to get the shelter ready
for this huge intake. We called and emailed Humane Society
contacts throughout the state that evening and contacted all
of our local veterinarians Thursday morning. We rented vehicles
to be able to transport the dogs. Fox Valley and Sheboygan
Humane Societies both said they were coming to our shelter
to take some of the dogs, and Clark and Portage County
Humane Societies would be joining us at the site to assist in
removing the dogs. Several SWCHS staff members and I left
around 10:00 Thursday morning. It was worse than I could
have imagined. The room the dogs were in was too small with
at least two "breeding" dogs in each small cage (several of the
cages had litters in them). We had to wear breathing masks, as
the smell quickly would overtake you. The room was unkempt,
dangerously wired and totally unsanitary. As we were trying to
remove the dogs from their cages, they would reflexively run to
the back of the cage, shivering in fear of being touched. Many
of the dogs had health issues, including blindness, mange,
burns, and severe grooming problems (matted hair, long nails).
After we documented each dog with notes and pictures, we

Selecting a pet?
When thinking of bringing a pet into one's life, consider the
lifestyle and needs of the family or individual, as well as meeting
the needs of that future canine or feline companion. Before
acting on impulse to acquire a pet, take time to consider the
commitment. Do not acquire a pet of any kind if your decision
is based on frivolous needs or spontaneous urges. A dog, cat,
or any other pet is a living, sensitive creature. Each one is an
individual, requiring lifelong attention and care. Their needs
do not cease when you are tired or preoccupied, when you
leave for vacation, or when the weather is bad. Pets require a
continued daily investment of your attention and energy. The
cost of pet food and supplies should also be planned for.
When you have decided that your life has room for a pet, the
next step is to select the appropriate pet for you. The house pet,
the yard guard, the feline friend, the hunting buddy, the show
dog, the lap pet, the child's pal ... all are companions, unique
and special to their "masters."
Large dogs make wonderful pets if they are given ample
opportunity for exercise, play and social interaction with their
owners. Cats thrive on attention and social contact with
humans, even if they, at times, can be content to play alone.
Please take the time and effort to make a careful selection,
as your pet will become a member of your family and provide
happiness and companionship over many years, and in turn,
should receive the care and attention they require.
Adopting an older dog or cat is an often overlooked option.
Giving these golden oldies a home may be very rewarding for
both master and pet. These mellow companions are usually
house trained, know obedience commands, and require
less strenuous exercise. However, realize there may be some
considerations with respect to a senior pet, similar to what some
senior citizens may be experiencing. For example, large dogs
with arthritic symptoms don't do well in homes with long flights
of stairs, and they may not be able to accompany you on long
or physically demanding hikes. Older animals should be given
more frequent potty breaks. Hearing and sight senses may be
less than normal, they may be frightened or startled by busy
households with toddlers. Keep in mind that these golden oldies
are in need of a home and companionship as much as any
puppy or kitten, and they will happily return that love and joy
and companionship that you give them.

Saturday, May 10, 2008
9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
With the help of the four other Humane Societies, we brought
the dogs into our lobby area. Animal Medical and Surgical
veterinarians, who donated their time and resources to help,
checked each of the dogs and notes were taken (all of our local
veterinarians graciously offered to help). We called in Sandy
Calverley of Rapids Little Dog Rescue, who works with many
of the breeds we received to assist us in accessing these dogs.
After all the documenting was done, each of our assisting
humane societies took some of the dogs to their facilities to
adopt from them. We kept approximately 25 dogs (including
one extremely pregnant Boston Terrier) at our shelter.
Once the Daily Tribune started reporting on the story that
afternoon, the experience became even more memorable.
Adam Wise put it on the newswire that afternoon, and other
media (television and radio) soon followed in reporting on the
story. The response was overwhelming. Bags of food started
showing up early Friday morning. Local pet groomers came in
(including Eddies and Creative Paws) and offered to help. Emails
filled my mailbox from all over Wisconsin and the Midwest. I
had an employee stay on the phone, as it did not stop ringing
beginning early Friday morning. After all the pets were ready,
looking and smelling so much better than the day before, we
opened our doors. It was our equivalent of opening up on the
day after Thanksgiving. Our parking lot was completely full, as
were the streets around the shelter. We had many donations
come in of food, goods, and money from families, individuals,
groups, and businesses. Our shelter was full of visitors all
throughout the weekend. Not only did all of our puppy mill
dogs get spoken for, but several shelter pets (both dog and cats)
got adopted over the weekend, as well. It makes me so happy
to think of where these dogs are now (vs. then); it is part of
what makes this job so rewarding.

I want to state how proud I am of all my employees who
worked long hours to take care of these dogs and get them
ready to be adopted. I am also proud of our board of directors,
many who donated time and resources while the dogs were
here. We had many people volunteer over the weekend; I thank
them all. We had several very qualified adoption applications on
each of the dogs; the hard part became in picking one for each
of them! I cannot begin to tell our community how thankful we
are for the tremendous outpouring of support given to SWCHS
during this time. You know the old saying "The grass is always
greener on the other side?" Well, this community is the "other
side;" this community is where "the grass is greener."
SWCHS is your shelter, and we welcome your support and
suggestions. We will continue to strive to improve and are proud
to help to put an end to puppy mills.
Sincerely,
Phil Hartley

HOPE is our special story. She is a one
year old cattle dog mix with a heart
of gold. She has a personality like a
young pup and ready to give all her
attention to you. From puppy mill
to puppy castle this fighter of life is
a true story of determination and
happy endings.
DUKE is our handsome man. He
is a two year old husky/lab mix. He
loves to walk and win the hearts
of anyone who meets him. A real
casanova. He is gentle and kind,
and what a way to be! He is ready
for a good home, but he does
need to be the only one. It's that
casanova attitude.
KEDA is our wonder girl. She is a six
month old akita and shephard mix.
She loves long walks and children.
She wants to be in an active home
and is waiting for the perfect family
to be the perfect pet. She has
beautiful eyes and has learned to
get her way when she looks at you.
That's why she is our wonder girl.
JAZZ Jazz is our big foot. He is a
domestic shorthair around three
years old and is majestic. Loves to
be held and rubbed behind the ears.
The best thing is he is polytoed - six
toes on the front feet. He is a large,
overstuffed teddy bear and knows it.
He loves to be in your lap and
loves other cats. He is a
gentle giant.

Highlights
Below is the speech that Phil Hartley delivered
upon receiving the Shining Star Award.
Shining Star awarded to SWCHS
I am proud to announce that the South Wood
County Humane Society recently won the Shining
Star Progress Award from the Heart of Wisconsin
Business and Economic Alliance. The Shining Star
award goes to a service organization or public institution
that provides dedication to community service and
leadership, and develops programs and services to adapt
to the communities needs. In accepting the award, I
had to give a speech (to many people who were in their
underwear). I would like to share some of the speech
with you:
“I am accepting this award on behalf of 13 employees.
It is definitely not the easiest jobs that they do. It is filled
with a lot of emotion, empathy, sometimes sadness, but
mostly a lot of hope and happiness. I am proud to work
with them.
I am accepting this award on behalf of a wonderful
board of directors. They have done a great job leading
and overseeing a lot of changes to our shelter in the
last year. The board is full of energy and goodwill and
will continue to guide the shelter through many more
positive changes.
I am accepting this award on behalf of our volunteers
and donators. I have been overwhelmed at the amount
of giving. This is not only of goods and money, but also
in the time, compassion, expertise, and just plain elbow
grease. As a nonprofit, we are always in fundraising
mode, and we are blessed to have many people willing
to step up and help.
I am accepting this award on behalf of the pets. Over
700 went from our facility into new loving homes in
the past year. In my almost 12 months on this job I have
seen cats, dogs, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, squirrels,
ferrets, rats, bats, ducks, geese, chickens, roosters, owls,
hawks, parakeets, cockatiels, goats, pigs, lizards of all
types, snakes (up to 20ft), iguanas, a lemur and a wolf
all go from our shelter to a new home. It has been a
truly amazing experience.
We have made so many changes in the last year. Thanks
to grants from the Community Foundation of Greater
South Wood County and others, we were able to greatly
enhance our technology. We have revamped our lobby,
made changes to our cat center, our adoption and
cleaning processes, and almost all of our forms and
4
paperwork in the last year. However, there are only so
many improvements we can make on our 30 year old,
too small, outdated building, which is why we have
begun the long process of looking for a new site for
the future.
I want to thank our local media. They have helped us to
show the positive things that happen at your shelter. I
want to thank all of the veterinarians in our area as well.
This community is lucky to have such great animal care.
I am proud of the
increased role
the South Wood
County Humane
Society is playing
in this wonderful
community. We just
recently sponsored
the Souper
Snow Sculpture
Spectacular. We have
our Walk, Run, and

the Christmas Bazaar

also have been a part
of many community
events. We have
given many talks at area schools, senior centers, and
our YMCA. I thank the Heart of Wisconsin Business and
Economic Alliance for their hard work in providing this
area with quality events and growth opportunities to be
a part of.
In closing, remember that this is your community
Humane Society. It is a place that I want you to be proud
of. Many people have the stigma that the humane
society is where animals come to be hidden away, to
die, to be put down. This is so far from the truth. Your
humane society is where pets come to live and be cared
for until they can find their new home. I hope in the
next year, many of you will provide the home that these
beautiful pets are waiting for.”

Souper Snow Sculpture

Humane Society
It was cold, but many warm hearts came out on
Saturday, January 19 to support the shelter and the
sculpters. Thank you to all who participated!
Greetings Staff at SWCHS,
As promised, we are sending some pictures and an
update on Mike, the Australian cattle dog we adopted
on January 19th.
Mike seems to have adjusted just fine to us, Addie (our
other Australian cattle dog), and our house. He is very
mellow and easy going, yet ready to play whenever the
opportunity arises. He's eating fine (for the first couple
of days he didn't eat much), and has found all of the
different soft surfaces in the house to sleep on! He loves to
shake, as you said; and he has quickly joined our howling
chorus (all humans and dogs included) whenever the
neighborhood sirens go off. (We live a block from a fire
station!) He, Addie and I have a joyous time together on
our daily walks and at the dog park on the weekends.
Ms. Addie actually has needed more adjusting than
Mike. She is fine with him around, but has moments of
"grumbling" (she really grumbles) when she perceives that
Mike is getting more attention. We try hard to make sure
that everything is equal!
Darrin and I feel very blessed and fortunate to have
discovered such a wonderful dog in Mike. We love him,
and feel we are so lucky with dogs because Addie is
wonderful, as well.
Thanks to the staff at SWCHS for all you do for all animals,
and for taking such good care of Mike for so long. You are
giving a wonderful thing to animals and people alike!
Best,
Eve Komosa and Darrin Kimbler

C Spay/Neuter Sponsorship
Name __________________________________
Every year millions of puppies and kittens are born; a number far greater than
the number of people willing to adopt them. Spaying and neutering your pet
is a step toward helping to control pet over-population in our area. In both
cats and dogs spaying/neutering can reduce the risks of certain disorders and
cancer. Neutering often resolves undesirable behaviors such as aggression,
spraying and roaming.
How can you help? For only $55 you can sponsor a pet’s surgery. A sign
will be placed on a pet’s kennel indicating to a potential adopter that they
will receive a voucher toward that pet’s spay or neuter.
What a great way to help!
