UNIVERSITI UTARA MALAYSIA SCHOOL OF COMPUTING COURSE CODE COURSE LECTURER : STIJ5014 : DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS (A142) : DR. NORLIZA KATUK GROUP PROJECT (20%) Objectives: This project aims to expose students to distributed system development. Students are expected to apply design principles and theory of distributed systems. This project also aims to promote collaborative learning and project management principles. Tasks: 1) Students are required to work in group of TWO (2) OR THREE (3). Each group is required to develop a web/mobile information extraction/gathering system. - An information extraction system extracts and gathers information from multiple websites, then; it organizes, formats, and presents the information to users. It helps users to find information on particular things (such as flight tickets, accommodations, books, magazines, electronic devices, insurance products, conferences, news, whether, natural disasters, just to name a few) using a simple searching tool. 2) Your main task is to figure out the way to extract the information. 3) Each group is required to develop a system that extracts and gathers information from THREE (3) websites (at least). It must have a simple user interface that allows users to perform searching. Use your creativity to choose an interesting and proper domain for the project. 4) The system must be accessible via the Internet (please upload your system to a free web hosting provider). 5) You can choose your own preferred scripting language. Any web programming languages can be used. 6) The report of the project should be written in a conference paper format following the IEEE (refer to http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html). Evaluation: Evaluation of the project comprises the following components: 1) Proposal 20% (due on 22 March 2015) - Please write a page of proposal indicating the domain/area that you choose for the system, lists of websites that you are going to extract information from, and the programming language that you are going to use to develop the system. Download the format from the course website. 2) Presentation 20% - Please prepare a presentation describing about the system and conduct a demo. 3) System 30% - Please ensure that the system is available online. 4) Report (paper) 30% - Please write 4 to 6 pages of a conference paper that explains o the concepts of information extraction systems o the architecture of the system that you have developed o the screenshot of the system o the benefits of the systems o future recommendation to improve the system - Please submit your paper through TURNITIN (the score should be less than 20%). Submission of the Report & presentation: 7 June 2015 (the time and venue will be informed later) 1 INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 AND 2 (15% EACH, TOTAL OF 30%) Objectives: This assignment aims to develop student’s understanding and knowledge on the current trends pertaining distributed systems, and academic writing and public speaking skills. Tasks: 1) 2) 3) 4) Students are required to write a conference paper with maximum of THREE (3) pages on the given topics (please see Appendix A) Use IEEE format (please download the template from: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html) Your paper should contain the following headings: a. Introduction b. How the concepts works (e.g., component, architecture, process, types, etc.) c. Description of TWO (2) examples of the concepts/products/implementations d. Issues or challenges e. Conclusion f. References (at least TEN(10) conference or journal articles published within 2010-2015) Prior to the submission, students are required to submit their paper to TURNITIN (http://www.turnitin.com). The paper should meet less than 20% of similarity/originality score (the lecturer will assign the TURNITIN ID to the students). Evaluation of this assignment comprises the following components: a. Presentation (30%) – 10 minutes presentation Assignment 1 Assignment 2 Virtual presentation Classroom presentation - Please record your presentation using - Presentation is during the class hour smartphone/tablet/laptop - The duration of the video must less than TEN (10) minutes - Upload the video to the UUM Online Learning b. 5) Paper (70%) Submission of the paper should be made through TURNITIN. The lecturer will download the assignment from TURNITIN and provide feedback on the softcopy of the assignment. The submission date is as below : Assignment 1 Assignment 2 7 April 2015 31 May 2014 2 APPENDIX A ______________________________________________________________________________________ TOPICS FOR INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 AND 2 COURSE GROUP LECTURER No : DISTRIBUTED SYSTEM(STIJ5014) – A A142 :A : Dr. Norliza Binti Katuk (1960) Matric Name Topics Assignment 1 Assignment 2 1 816325 Adam bin Zulqarnain Cloud Computing Self-adaptive Systems (SAS) 2 814907 Adnan Hussein Ali Bin Yahya Software Defined Networks Big data infrastructure 3 817485 Alaa Fareed Abdulateef Desktop Virtualization Single Sign On (SSO) 4 815037 Aljawi, Adnan Ahmad A Mobile Code Representational State Transfer (REST) Web Service 5 815672 Asma Almkhtar Alhaj Salem Internet of Things Mobile Adhoc Network (MANET) 6 818344 Hanif Cloud Computing Self-adaptive Systems (SAS) 7 814910 Ibrahim Eskandar Ibrahim Fadhel Software Defined Networks Big data infrastructure 8 817590 KAYATRI A/P KRISHNAN Desktop Virtualization Single Sign On (SSO) 9 816283 Md Shahadath Sarker Mobile Code Representational State Transfer (REST) Web Service 10 817506 Mohd Hafeez bin Mohd Soid Internet of Things Mobile Adhoc Network (MANET) 11 814946 Munya Saleh Saeed Ba Matraf Cloud Computing Self-adaptive Systems (SAS) 12 815528 Naser.
