Setting’s Effect on Mood
Haikus
Haiku: a form of Japanese poetry with 17 syllables in three
unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, often
describing nature or a season
Today you will write two haikus about the setting and
mood/atmosphere of “The Cask of Amontillado.” Look back at
the story and copy important descriptive words.
Choose two elements of the setting you want to describe in
your first two lines. Choose two of the elements that make the
setting appropriate for this story.
Your final line should describe the mood/atmosphere of the
story that is established by the setting
Arrange your words in Haiku form: the first line is 5-syllables;
the second line is 7-syllables; the third line is 5-syllables.
