Panther Pride on P-a-r-a-d-e—Adult Spell Team Members
Proving that the Panthers' competitive spirit is not reserved for students alone, several staff members
voyaged to the Ameristar in East Chicago on Tuesday night for the 27th Annual Executive Spelling Bee.
Teams ranging from the Lake County Public Library employees to Purdue University Calumet School
of Nursing took the stage with our own Mrs. Vicki Schmidt, Mrs. Betty Franz, and myself, Mrs. Sally
Santellano. Mrs. Jane Scupham served as the team coach. We made it into the 14th round (2 teams
were knocked out early on with "bolide" and "mugwump") with some awesome spelling on our part:
courtier, prognosticated, lambasted, genetic, and so on. Although we came in third (I take full responsibility, sadly) we did win the unofficial "Team Spirit" award, as Mrs. Melissa Czekaj and Mrs. Kathy
Olson came decked out in Spirit Wear and led cheers in our honor. The Ameristar executives defeated
the Valparaiso Adult Literacy Center teachers with the word "unctuous". All in all, it was an exciting
and nerve wracking event that not only showcased what makes Saint Paul special, but how fun we are.
We're gearing up for next year already, because we Panthers don't quit!
“I never thought that participating in an adult spelling bee could be so fun, amusing, exciting, entertaining! Our team was e-x-t-r-a-o-r-d-i-n-a-r-y. Our cheer squad brought the most spirit of any cheerleaders
in the state of Indiana and our spellers collaborated with their expert knowledge of the English language
in a way that would make any coach glow with pride. I am blessed and fortunate to work alongside so
many creative, amusing, amazing women!” commented Coach Scupham
Team member Franz recaps: “What a delightful evening we enjoyed Tuesday night participating in the
Literacy Coalition Adult Spelling Bee...it was a privilege (sp? lol) to be a part of this team and share in
the camaraderie (sp? lol). I have to admit feeling as though I was back in my fourth grade class participating in a Spelling Bee and experiencing the same symptoms I remember back then: tightness in throat,
sweaty palms and that infamous knot in the stomach!!! Though it was nerve
-wracking, it was a lot of fun and I was quite thankful that it was a "TEAM"
event and not an individual competition which would have required me to
have a red bag with me! :) All in all, it was a great experience, and I believe
for being a novice team we showed quite well placing third in the competition; and though it wasn't acknowledged, we know our cheerleaders were
not only the most-spirited, but were far and away "the loudest"!”
Vicki Schmidt loved that her students wished her good luck at the end of the school day prior to the
competition and many promised to offer prayers for a win. Most impressively, many of those same
students greeted her the next morning anxiously hoping to hear the team brought home a trophy.
“It was a great evening. Who knew I had a calling to be a cheerleader?” mentioned Kathy Olson.
Melissa Czekaj, Cheer Team Captain, had this to say about the evening, “Oh, those girls are much
too much, those girls are much too much - Woo!!!!" "Woo-Hoo...Woo-Hoo...Woo-Hoo"; and "S-
A-I-N-T P-A-U-L ... Goooooooooo Saint Paul!!!!”

Fever Free
With the cold and cough season just beginning to appear here at school, we would like
to remind you that your child must be feverfree to come to school. Fever-free means that
they no longer have a fever, and haven’t had
one for 24 hours; NOT that they were given
fever-reducing medicine that has just suppressed the fever. It is vital to the health of all
students that this rule is followed.
Administration, faculty and staff will be available for questions, and tours of the building
will be given by our students. Please enter
through door L in the back of the school. Any
questions, please contact Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Dawn Wojkovich @

Put Your Nose in a Book — Sally Santellano
On Friday, October 3rd, at 10 a.m., Saint Paul students joined with all schools in Northwest Indiana to "Put Your Nose in a
Book". Teachers donned red clown noses and all classes cuddled up with a good book for some quality DEAR time (Drop
Everything and Read). Keep your eyes peeled to the LINK and White Envelope to hear more ways in October that we will
celebrate books and reading. After all, "Life Without Books is SCARY"!

A Character Quilt — Beth Smith
On Friday, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Rowley joined their classes together to work on a math project. The session began with the sharing of the story titled The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie
Flournoy. As the children listened to Tanya’s journey of learning about how Grandma makes
a quilt, they began to realize that each piece of her quilt tells a story. The second graders then
used concepts of shapes and lines of symmetry to design their own character squares using fall
images. The end result was a quilt made of cats, pumpkins, trees, apples, scarecrows, and
lumber jacks.
