Novel   is   a   kind   of   literary   work   that   could   be   enjoyed   by   everyone.

Novel   is   not   only   as   entertainment   but   also   as   a   guidance   of   our   lives   because   many   novels   contain   a   lot   of   moral   messages.

Reading   novel   is   one   way   to   appreciate   of   literature   work.

Novel   can   represent   human’s   life   and   can   be   inspirations   for   those   who   have   read   it.

There   are   so   many   kinds   of   novel,   they   are   romance,   comedy,   tragedy,   horror   etc.

Novel   consists   of   theme,   setting,   character,   point   of   view   and   plot.

In   this   study,   the   writer   analyzes   the   intrinsic   element   of   novel   especially   the   settings   as   a   whole   in   the   novel   entitled   “ The   Godfather   “   by   Mario   Puzo   because   the   writer   wants   to   analyze   the   novel   comprehensively.

In   The   Godfather’   setting   takes   place   in   his   own   hometown,   New   York   City   and   in   the   middle   of

1940’s.

At   that   time,   New   York   is   being   reigned   neither   by   local   government   nor   the   police.

The   mafia   families   fully   control   that   city   in   every   inch   as   it   has.

The   force   of   every   families   clash   never   ends   battle   that   will   determine   the   sole   conqueror   of   the   city.

Discussion

A   Brief   Synopsis   of   The   Godfather .

Mario   Puzo’s   The   Godfather   was   probably   one   of   the   world   most   memorable   novels.

Since   it   was   firstly   published   in   1969,   The   Godfather   has   sold   for   over   twenty ‐ five   million   copies   in   all   over   the   world.

This   novel   was   adapted   on   the   screenplays   for   all   the   three   The   Godfather   movies   and   won   Academy

Awards   for   both   The   Godfather   (1972)   and   The   Godfather ,   Part   II   (1972)   and   became   the   first   sequel   to   win   the   Oscar   for   Best   Adapted   Scenario.

Up   until   now,   the   writer   still   considers   all   the   three   The

Godfather   movies   as   one   of   the   best   trilogy   movies   has   ever   made.

Vito   Corleno   was   born   in   Corleone,   Sicily,   in   the   late   of   1890’s.

His   father,   Antonio   Andolini   was   killed   by   Don   Ciccio,   the   head   of   criminal   family   in   town,   and   so   were   the   rest   of   his   family.

Because   of   that   situation,   his   mother   sent   the   young   Vitto   to   America   Young   Vito   to   work   in   Abbandando’s   groceries   in

Hell’ss   kitchen,   New   york,   which   later   on,   he   married   with   an   eighteen ‐ years   old   Italian   girl.

  At   that   time,

Hell’ss   kitchen   was   ruled   by   a   man   known   as   Don   Fanucci.

He   used   to   collect   some   money   from   local   citizen.

At   the   same   time,   he   met   with   Peter   Clemenza   and   Salvatore   Tessio,   who   both   them   will   become

Vito’s   caporegime   in   the   future.

One   day,   Vito   was   able   to   kill   Fanuci.

Since   then,   everyone   in   the   neighborhood   paid   him   a   great   respect.

He   also   established   “Genco   Pura“   or   in   English   “Genco“   Olive

Oil”,   which   turned   him   into   the   most   successful   olive   oil   importer   in   America.

From   his   marriage,   Vito   has   four   children   they   are:   Santino   “Sonny   “,   Frederico   “Fredo   “,   Michael,   and   Constanza   “Connie”.

His   business   was   growing   rapidly   and   Vito   became   well   respected   by   most   of

the   Italian   American.

Vito   also   adopted   one   of   Sonny’s   friends   named   Tom   Hagen   when   Tom   was   thirteen.

The   year   after,   he   was   proclaimed   as   Don   Corleone.

He   taught   his   sons   in   such   of   mafioso ’s   tradition   while   appears   that   Michael   refused   this   methods.

Michael   decided   to   leave   his   father   and   joined   U.S

Marine   and   returned   home   shortly   after   World   War   II   has   ended.

At   the   wedding   reception   of   Don   Vito   Corleone’s   daughter,   Connie   and   Carlo   Rizzi   in   the   late   summer   of   1945,   Vito,   the   head   of   the   Corleone   mafia   family ‐ who   is   known   to   his   friends   and   associates   as

Godfather   and   Tom   Hagen,   the   Corleone   family   lawyer   and   counselor,   are   hearing   request   favor   from   friends   and   associates,   because   “no   Sicilian   can   refuse   a   request   on   his   daughter’s   wedding   day”.

Meanwhile,   the   Don’s   youngest   son,   Michael,   who   has   returned   from   World   War   II   service   as   a   decorated   war   hero,   tells   his   girlfriend   Kay   Adam   anecdote   about   his   father’s   criminal   life,   reassuring   her   that   he   is   not   like   his   family.

Among   the   guest   at   the   celebration   is   the   Hollywood   famous   singer   Johnny   Fontaine,   Corleone’s

Godson,   who   has   come   from   Hollywood   to   petition   for   help   in   landing   a   movie   role   that   will   revitalize   his   flagging   career.

Jack   Woltz,   head   of   the   studio,   would   give   Fontaine   the   part,   but   Don   Corleone   explains   to   Johnny:   I’ll   make   him   an   offer   he   can’t   refuse.

“Hagen   is   dispatched   to   Californiaa   to   fix   the   problem,   but   Woltz   angrily   told   him   that   he   will   never   cast   Fontaine   in   the   role,   for   which   he   is   perfect,   because

Fontaneine   seduced   and   ruined   a   starlet   that   Woltz   favored.

The   next   morning,   Woltz   wakes   up   to   fine   the   bloody   severed   head   of   his   prize   $600,000   stud   horse   in   the   bed   with   him.

  Woltz   gives   in.

Upon   Hagen’s   return,   the   family   meets   with   Virgil”The   Turk   “Sollonzo,   who   is   being   backed   by   the   rival   Tattaglia   family.

He   asks   Don   Corleone   for   financing   and   political   and   legal   protection   for   the   importation   and   distribution   of   heroin,   but   despite   the   huge   amount   of   money   to   be   made,   Corleone   refuses,   narcotics   trade.

The   Don’s   oldest   son,   hot ‐ headed   Sonny,   who   had   earlier   expressed   to   the   Don

his   support   of   the   family   entering   into   the   narcotics   trade,   breaks   rank   during   the   meeting   and   questions

Sollozzo’s   assurances   as   to   the   Corleone   Family’s   investment   being   guaranteed   by   the   Tattaglia   Family.

His   fathers’s   angry   at   Sonny’s   dissension   in   front   of   a   non ‐ family   member,   privately   rebules   him   later.

Don   Corleone   then   dispatches   his   top   button   man   (hit   man),   Luca   Brasi,   infiltrate   Sollozzo’s   organization   and   report   back   with   information.

But   everything   is   becoming   a   devastating   catastrophe.

Luca   Brasi   is   set   up   and   killed   by   Sollozzo’s   in

Tattaglia’s   night   club.

The   climax   is   when   Don   Vito   is   shot   by   Sollozzo’s   fellows   even   though   he   is   still   alive.

Michael   decided   to   make   a   payback.

He   arranges   a   meeting   with   Sollozzo   and   kills   him   and   his   police   companion,   Captain   McCluskey.

  Michael   is   moved   into   Sicily.

Soon   after   Captain   McCluskey   dead,   the   New   York   Police   Department   refuse   to   back   up   all   the   illegal   activities   which   are   run   by   the   “Five

Families”   –   the   group   of   Italian   criminal   families   which   was   led   by   Corleone’s   family.

This   action   is   taking   for   unlimited   time   phase,   until   someone   would   give   information   about   Captain   McCluskey’s   murderer.

While   Michael   was   in   Sicily,   Don   Barzini,   one   of   the   head   of   family   that   fused   the   “Five   Families”,   murdered   Sonny.

Barzini   took   this   action   since   he   was   upset   with   Don   Corleone   who   did   not   want   to   ask

Michael   to   surrender.

      Michael   returns   home.

In   a   private   meeting,   Vito   explains   his   expectation   that   the   Family’s   enemies   would   attempt   to   kill   Michael   by   using   a   trusted   associate   to   arrange   a   meeting   as   a   pretext   for   assassination.

Shortly   afterwards,   Vito   died   of   a   heart   attack   while   he   was   playing   with   his   young   grandson   Anthony   in   his   tomato   garden.

At   the   burial,   Tessio   conveys   a   proposal   for   a   meeting   with

Barzini,   which   identifies   him   as   the   traitor   that   Vito   was   expecting   before   he   died.

Michael   thinks   that   he   must   get   rid   of   all   his   enemies   as   soon   as   possible.

Michael   arranges   for   a   series   of   murders   to   occur   while   he   is   standing   as   Godfather   for   Connie   and

Carlo’s   son:

Don   Stracci   and   his   bodyguards   are   shot   by   Clemenza   with   a   shotgun   as   they   exit   an   elevator;

Moe   Greene,   while   he   is   having   a   massage   in   one   of   his   hotels,   is   shot   by   Al   Neri,   Michael’s   personal   button   man.

Don   Cuneo,   while   he   is   leaving   a   hotel,   is   trapped   in   revolving   door   by   Willi   Cicci   an   shot;

Don   Tattaglia   and   a   woman   he   with   are   gunned   down   while   he   is   in   bed   by   Rocco   Lampone   and   another   unknown   assassin;

Finally,   Don   Barzini   is   shot   on   the   steps   of   a   courthouse   also   by   Al   Neri,   who   a   disguise   by   wearing   his   old   policeman’s   uniform.

After   the   baptism   of   Connie’s   son   whom   Michaels   is   as   his   Godfather,   Tessio   believes   that   he   and

Hagen   are   on   their   way   to   the   meeting   between   Michael   and   Barzini   that   he   has   arranged.

Instead,   he   is   surrounded   by   Willi   Cicci   and   other   button   men.

Realizing   that   Michael   has   found   out   about   his   betrayal,

Tessio   tells   Hagen   that   his   betrayal   is   only   business   and   begs   for   a   forgiveness.

But   Hagen   is   just   staring   to   Tessio   without   saying   any   words.

Meanwhile,   Michael   confronts   Carlo   about   Sonny’s   murder   and   gets   him   to   admit   his   role   in   setting   up   the   ambush.

Michael   informs   Carlo   that   his   punishment   is   to   be   excluded   from   the   family   business   and   hand   him   a   plane   ticket   to   exile   in   Las   Vegas.

Carlo   gets   into   a   car   to   go   to   the   airport,   where   he   is   garroted   by   Clemenza.

Later,   Connie   confronts   Michael,   accusing   him   of   Carlo’s   murder.

Kay   asks   Michael   about   Connie’s   accusation,   but   he   refuses   to   answer.

She   insists,   and   Michael   lies,   assuring   his   wife   that   he   had   no   role   in   Carlo’s   death.

Kay   was   relieved   by   his   denial,   believing   it   to   be   true.

The   story   ends   while   Kay   astonished   and   deeply   shocks   when   Clemenze,   Rocco,   and   Al   Neri   come   together   to   send   his   deepest   respect   by   saying:”Don   Michael”.

Based   on   the   story   of   the   novel,   the   writer   makes   an   analysis   on   the   data   that   has   been   collected   to   get   a   real   description   of   the   setting   and   its   relationship   to   the   characters   and   the   plot   of   the   story.

Setting of The Godfather

Place Setting

Place   setting   is   setting   where   the   story   takes   place   at   the   geographical   location,   its   topography,   scenery,   and   such   physical   arrangements   such   as   location   of   the   windows   and   the   doors   in   a   room.

The   elements   of   place   which   are   used   may   be   in   the   form   of   place   with   a   certain   name,   certain   initial   and   certain   location   without   a   clear   name.

In   The   Godfather ,   Mario   Puzo   drew   several   locations   to   be   the   setting   of   the   story.

The   story   starts   in   New   York   and   as   the   story   goes   the   setting   moves   from   New   York   to   Sicily,   Italy,   and   back   again   to   New   York.

New   York   is   the   most   populous   city   in   the   United   States,   and   the   center   of   the   New   York   metropolitan   area,   which   is   among   the   most   populous   urban   areas   in   the   world.

Millions   of   immigrants   came   to   America   in   the   late   19th   and   early   20th   centuries   made   a   lot   of   crimes.

Organized   crime   has   long   been   associated   with   New   York   City,   beginning   with   the   Forty   Thieves   and   the   Roach   Guards   in   the

Five   Points   in   the   1820s.

The   20th   century   saw   a   rise   in   the   Mafia   dominated   by   the   Five   Families.

Gangs   including   the   Black   Spades   also   grew   in   the   late   20th   century.

At   the   beginning,   Puzo   mentioned   New   York   as   the   opening   word   of   the   story. It

is   shown   in   the   quotation   below:

“Amerigo   Bonnaserra   sat   in   New   York   Criminal   Court   number   three   and   waited   for   justice;   vengeance   on   the   man   who   had   so   cruelly   hurt   his   daughter,   who   had   tried   to   dishonor   her.”

(Puzo,   1969:   1)

Beside   that   description,   the   story   continues   and   develops   in   several   areas   which   are   located   in   the   greater   New   York,   for   instance:   Long   Island,   when   Don   held   his   daughter’s   wedding   ceremony:

“Now   on   this   great   day,   his   daughter’s   wedding   day,   Don   Vito   Corleone   stood   in   the   doorway   of   his   Long   Beach   home   to   greet   his   guests,   all   of   them   known,   all   of   them   trusted.”

(Puzo,   1969:   8)

The   raising   part   takes   role   when   Don   was   shot   by   Sollozzo’s   button   man,   while   he   was   buying   fruits   in   the   groceries:

“Out   in   the   street   the   early   the   early   winter   light   was   failing   .….

This   had   been   his   habit   lately,   he   loves   the   big   out   of   season   fruits,   yellow   peaches   and   oranges,   that   glowed   in   their   green   boxes.

  The   proprietor

spranged     to   serve   him…..

He   dropped   the   bag   of   fruit   and   darted   toward   the   parked   car   with   startling   quickness   for   a   man   in   his   bulk.

At   the   same   time   he   shouted,’Fredo,Fredo’.

It   was   only   then   that   the   two   men   drew   their   guns   and   fired.”

(Puzo,   1969:   78)

Time Setting

Time   setting   is   the   setting   related   to   “when”   the   events   in   the   story   happen.

The”when”   thing   is   usually   connected   with   factual   time   which   has   connection   with   or   can   be   related   to   the   historical   event.

Time   setting   also   includes   the   season   and   the   weather.

The   historical   event   in   this   story   is   World   War   II.

During   that   period   Mafia   took   over   almost   all   aspects   of   life.

Organized   crime   or   mafia   most   typically   flourishes   when   a   central   government   and   civil   society   is   disorganized,   weak,   absent   or   entrusted.

This   may   occur   in   a   society   facing   periods   of   political,   economic   or   social   turmoil   or   transition,   such   as   a   change   of   government   or   a   period   of   rapid   economic   development,   particularly   if   the   society   lacks   strong   and   established   institutionse.

The   mafia   run   highly   centralized   enterprises   for   the   purpose   of   engaging   in   illegal   activity,   most   commonly   for   the   purpose   of   generating   a   monetary   profit.

In   the   quotations   below,   Puzo   explains   the   time   setting   in   his   story   that   includes   the   year,   time   of   day,   season   and   weather   and   historical   event.

“All   of   these   people   and   many   others   received   engraved   invitation   to   the   wedding   of   Miss   Constanzia   Corleone,   to   be   celebrated   on   the   last

Saturday   in   August.”

(Puzo,   1969:   7)

“But   when   World   War   II   broke   out,   Michael   Corleone   volunteered   for   the   Marine   Corps.

He   defied   his   father’s   express   command   when   he   said   so.”

(Puzo,   1969:   10)

Social Setting

Social   setting   is   the   setting   which   is   connected   with   society’s   life   behavior   in   a   place   which   is   told   in   the   story.

It   includes   habits,   custom,   manner,   tradition,   belief,   character’s   social   status,   and   emotional   condition   of   the   character.

The   social   setting   that   could   be   found   in   The   Godfather   are   the   custom   Sicilian   that   has   been   usually   implied   in   their   daily   life.

The   quotations   below   support   this   statement:

These   quotations   below   show   how   a   Sicilian   grew   to   be   a   man   ,   especially   whose   daughter   is   married,   treats   a   helping   request   as   a   something   which   is   considered   as   an   obligation   to   be   fulfilled.

“…Because   they   know   that   by   tradition   no   Sicilian   can   refuse   a   request   on   his   daughter’s   wedding   day.

And   so   no   Sicilian   ever   lets   a   chance   like   that   go   by.”

(Puzo,   1969:   21)

These   show   Sicilian   worships   friendship   more   than   anything,   especially   the   home   town   friend.

It   also   can   be   concluded,   that   at   that   time,   the   social   situation   in   Italy   was   so   ruined,   hence   Mafia   is   considered   more   powerful   than   any   legal   authority.

“When   Johnny   didn’t   answer,   Don   went   on,   “Friendship   is   everything.

Friendship   is   more   than   talent.

  It   is   more   government.”

  (Puzo,   1969:   33)

Conclusion

The   Godfather   is   one   the   well   known   masterpice   of   Mario   Puzo.

Puzo   wrote   this   novel   because   of   his   respect   of   and   old   Sicilian   traditions   and   in   improving   social   conditions   which   he   described   much   in   his   characters   and   stories.

He   used   this   interest   for   creating   the   exciting   characters   and   events   in   New

York   City   at   the   time   when   Mafia   still   ruled   there.

After   analyzing   the   setting   in   The   Godfather ,   the   writer   concludes   :

‐  The   setting   in   this   story   is   mainly   circled   in   New   York   City   area,   and   supported   in   Sicily,   Italy.

The   ending   itself   holds   still   in   New   York   City,   when   Michael   Corleone   finally   regained   his   family’s   power   after   he   killed   all   the   heads   of   the   other   Mafia   Families.

‐  The   time   setting   of   The   Godfather   covers   the   American   historical   periode   from   early   1900’s   and   from

1945   –   1948.

‐   The   social   setting   of   this   story,   which   includes   the   social   status   of   the   characters,   manner   and   habits,   custom,   and   tradition,   are   the   old ‐ fashioned   Sicilian   leader   habit   of   Don   Vito   Corleone,   and   moderate   but   tactical   habit   of   Michael   Corleone.

The   writer   also   found   that   Puzo   described   the   social   status   of   the

Italian   Families   who   were   living   in   New   York   at   that   time.

‐   The   relation   of   setting   to   the   character   can   be   seen   in   the   changing   behavior   of   Michael   Corleone.

At   the   beginning,   he   refused   to   bear   his   family   name   but   as   it   turned   out   he   decided   to   manage   his   family   to   gain   all   the   sovereignity.

Meanwhile,   the   relation   of   the   setting   to   the   plot   is   when   Puzo   described   New   York   City   as   the   lame   and   corrupt   city   which   all   of   its   legal   authorities   and   the   goverment   cannot   be   functioned   well,   since   they   all   worked   for   the   Mafia   Families.
