Howdy Barn Burner 104 Athletes,
We proudly present this second race in the 2012 Leadville Race Series, The Barn Burner
104. Welcome to the fourth go-round of the Landis Cyclery Barn Burner 104! Solo Racers,
welcome to your chance to qualify for the legendary Leadville Trail 100. Relay team
members , we are so glad you are coming back for the showdown with your closest peers
and rivals!
We’re not gonna lie to you, there’s not a lot of changes this year, just the same ole killer
mountain bike ridin’, beautiful pines and mountain air, lots of good times with friends,
the mother load of cold Four Peaks Brewing Company beers, plenty volunteers to make
sure you have a fantastic ride.. oh and of course the qualify slots for the solo riders! The
property you will be camping on was once part of the Wild West, no joke, wagons went
right through it during the gold rush. The property owner and his family have been
extremely gracious and kind in allowing us to use their land. Be sure to thank them and
help keep the place clean (leave no trace principals in full effect) in hopes we can come
back again and again!
The property owner is a long time friend of the race, and helped plot the course and set
up the site. For those of ya’ll that did not partake in the pre-rides, this is a 26+ mile looped
course, with plenty ‘o room for speed, some bumpy descents, and a few hills to keep you
honest. The course is open to traffic, motorized buggies, deer, riders and other folk, so
please be courteous, obey the law, and use your smarts.
Thank you for racing with us and we hope to see you again soon at many of our Leadville
Race Series events. Please visit www.leadvilleraceseries.com for a complete listing of all of
our events.

performances and half will be drawn among riders who have met a time standard specific
to that race.
In 2011 we implemented a corral system for starting positions at the Leadville Trail 100. For

Wilderness...what, no mountain bikes?
$300 for the first ofense. $500 for the second offense. Bikes can be confiscated on site
and Law Enforcement will be involved!
What is Wilderness?
• Wilderness areas are free of mechanized equipment
• Wilderness areas provide opportunities to experience nature unaltered.
• Wilderness areas allow ecosystems to exist without influences of human impacts.
Wilderness is an area of undeveloped federal land retaining its primeval character and
influence which is protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions and
provides outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfined type of
recreation.
Excerpt from Wilderness Act of 1964
Why are mountain bikes not allowed?
• As a mechanical device, mountain bikes bring an un-natural component to our
wilderness areas.
• Mountain bikes conflict with users seeking an entirely primitive experience.
• Wildlife behavior can be disrupted by the speed and noise of bikes.
Public lands allow for many different recreation activities. Please respect the desired
experiences of other users and only ride on designated mountain biking trails.

Leave No Trace Principals
Plan Ahead and Prepare
• Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit.
• Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
• Durable surfaces include established trails and campsites, rock, gravel, or dry
grasses.
• Good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary.
Dispose of Waste Properly
• Pack it in, pack it out.
• Deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from
water, camp, and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished.
Leave What You Find
• Preserve the past: examine, but do not touch, cultural or historic structures and
artifacts.
• Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.
Minimize Campfire Impacts
• Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the backcountry. Use a lightweight stove for
cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light.
• Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires.
Respect Wildlife
• Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.
• Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors,
and exposes them to predators and other dangers.
Be Considerate of Other Visitors
• Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
• Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail.
