A Message From
Chapter President,
Nile Holmes
(909) 635– 8257
Fellow Marines, FMF Corpsman and
friends of the Chapter.
The Christmas Party on December 13, 2014
was very good. Everyone had a great time
and the help provided by the Santa Clarita
Valley Young Marines added to the festivities. The Young Marines helped with the raffle prize and 50/50 Raffle drawings.
Rose Cesaroni won the Grand Prize, a two
night stay and dinner at the Marine Memorial
Club in San Francisco. Emily Turner was the
winner of the 50/50/ drawing walking away
with $163 dollars..
The Chapter presented a check in the
amount of $320.00 to the Santa Clarita Valley Young Marines. MSgt Tim Stratton, USMCR Retired and Commanding Officer of the
Young Marine accepted the check.
The funds are dedicated to the purchase of
two Parade Riffles and accessories. The rifles will be used for parades, color guard detail and training.
Tim Stratton is hopeful that the riffles will be
delivered in time for the Young Marines to
share them with us at the Membership Meeting on 18, January 2015.
On Sunday, 18 January 2015 at the Hyatt
Regency Valencia. the Chapter will present
the 1st Annual
“ Sergeant Charles F. Meter Award” at our
annual membership meeting.
Will also have a WWII Marine at the Membership Meeting who will be displaying some
of his WWII memorabilia.
For those of you who are in town I hope to
see you there.
Stay healthy and be Happy.

Molly and Tom Kelly
Greetings from LtCol Eric Dougherty,
Currently, we are in the middle of our training cycle, getting ready to head out.
During this time, I would like to take a moment
and let you, 1st Marine Division Association –
L.A. Chapter, know how much you are appreciated. It takes a lot of commitment to do what you do
for our Marines, Sailors and their Families.
Your efforts help our Marines & Sailors focus
on their mission. They are not worried about what
is happening at home.
The Holiday Commissary Gift Cards were
greatly appreciated and helped our Junior Marines
& Sailors have a wonderful, complete, meal for the
holidays. The diapers and baby blankets, delivered by Tom & Molly Kelly, are a great addition
to our new baby gift bags.
I can’t tell you how great it is to receive boxes
and boxes of food, delivered by Bill Turner, to
distribute to our Marines & Sailors. It all helps
and you truly do “Whatever it Takes” to continue
to support our military families.
Again, Happy Holidays, from the China Marines!

JUST FOR FUN WINNERS
Congratulations to John Allen,
Fountain Valley, California and to
Tom McLeod, Texarkana, Texas
for being the first two to solve last
months “Just For Fun” puzzle.
“To Tie Mules To”
Both will have their names entered into the Friday 50/50 drawing at the 2015 Bodfish Campout.
John and Tom are Life Members
of the LA Chapter and Tom
Mcleod is also a Bodfish Chapter
Life Member. Hopefully we can
get John Allen to finally join the
Bodfish at the Campout this February. John has talked about joining for years, perhaps February 2015 will be his year to join the Internationally Famous Chapter of the FMDA.
A Night Out
Emily and I joined Colonel Mike and Ann Scalise for
their annual Christmas Party at MCLB Barstow on December 19th. We had a fun time and good food.
Col. Scalise is the Commanding Officer of Marine
Corps Logistic Base Barstow, CA. Also within his
command is the USMC Mounted Color Guard.
In visiting with Col. Scalise he has assured me, baring any unforeseen incident, that the Horse Marines
will be at the 2015 Bodfish Campout.
Col. Scalise and his wife Ann may join us in February
for the Bodfish Campout. He missed last years campout and was looking forward to becoming a Bodfisher. Perhaps he will be graced with the Bodfish title
and membership in February.
Del Mar Campout Update
A Committee, chaired by Norm Kellems, is being formed
to look into a Del Mar Campout in 2015.
Issues of concern will the acquisition of Insurance to cover us while on base.
The Chapter has learned that coverage through the
FMDA, which as a Chapter we pay for, is limited and the
insurance company W.B. Adams is not willing to cover us at
our current premium rate. Therefore they farm it our to anther insurance carrier who is asking too much to cover the
two day event, $800.00.
We will what and see what the committee comes up with.
Until next month, Semper Fi and Bodfish Forever… D.T.
JANUARY 2015

BODFISH SKINNY
…....or just plain BS
NORM “IAS” KELLEMS
PRESIDENT
Feb 2014– Feb 2015
Bodfish Forever!!
Our Bodfish President has been real busy with
family matters ranging from family funerals for
a 90+ year old grandmother and a brother to a
wedding of a daughter.
So as Marines do, we will help him out this
month. Besides the Snail Mail Version of the
Newsletter is do to the printer tomorrow morning , 22 December.
The Bodfish campout is next month and things
are shaping up very well. As of 22 December
2014 we already have 56 people pre-registered .
Bonnie Clark and Ruth Davis are all signed up
and ready to start checking people in. They have
been doing the check-in since mid 1960’s.
We will be sharing lunch on Friday ( Our Big
Meal of the day) with the members of the Piru
Petroleum Club. They are looking forward to
seeing us again and visiting with old friends and
making new ones
This year we will have a Bodfish Field PX.
Bodfish VP Gene Wuestenfield and Bodfish
Treasurer Robert Carroll will be manning that
station. They will have some really “must
have” items for sale.
We are going to have a “Silent Auction” this
year. Max Felser has offered to help with the set
up and management. The involvement of our
members means an awful lot to the success of all
that we do and are able to achieve. This campout can not work with just one person, it takes a
team.
We will be presenting the Bodfish Sword of
Honor and a Devil Doc Award again this year to
an active duty Marine and FMF Corpsman.
The Horse Marines will be on station to handle
the morning and evening colors and to provide
some great photo opportunities. They will also
assist with the BFRD.
Sharon Mann and Emily Turner will be coordinating the Bodfish Bevie of Beauties High Tea
on Friday after noon, around 1500.
Watch the deadline for pre-registration.
Don’t miss it or it will cost you at least $15.00
more at the door.
Semper Fi and Bodfish Forever!! BFPP’s
On Saturday, 13 December 2014 members, family and friends came together to celebrate the Holiday Season in the banquet room at
“ Monterey at Encino”
Guests were greeted at the check in table by members of
the Santa Clarita Valley Young Marines .
Dale Turner opened the party with a greeting and introduction of Past Chapter Presidents , current Chapter President and
guests.
Phil Olivero lead us all in the pledge of allegiance followed by our Chapter Chaplain , Bill Turner with a prayer and
blessing of the meal.
Chapter President Nile Holmes thanked everyone for coming to the party and then , in the spirit of Christmas, called Tim Stratton , Commanding Officer of the Santa Clarita Valley Young Marines, to the podium. Nile, on behalf of the Chapter, presented Tim Stratton with a
check in the amount of $320.00 for the Young Marines. The donation is to be used for the purchase of two new parade rifles and accessories for the Santa Clarita Valley Young Marines program, items the Young Marines have been trying to secure funds for. Merry Christmas
SCV Young Marines. Tim is a life member of the LA Chapter and a retired Master Sergeant USMCR. Tim works for the City of Los Angeles at the Convention Center.
The Young Marines did an outstanding job in helping with the raffle prize
table, verifying the winning numbers and presenting the prizes to the
winners. The adult staff leaders took pictures of the Young Marines and our
guests at each table.
Many thanks to all those who brought a gift for the
raffle table. Your generosity coupled with your creativeness or even re-gifting made the raffle table once
again a big hit at our Christmas party. The gifts
ranged from a set of collectable coins, Marine collectables to gifts from the Ellen Degeneras Show.
The Young Marines helped with the drawing by
drawing the winning ticket, verifying the number and
presenting the gift.
The winner of the Grand prize, A two
night stay and a $50.00 gift certificate to
the Marines’ Memorial Club in San Francisco, CA went to Rose Cesaroni.
Congratulations Rose I’m sure you and
Dick will have a great time.
This prize is donated annually to the
Chapter by Major General Mike Myatt.
The prize is valued at $500.00.
If you have never been to the Marines’
Memorial Club you are really missing out
on a memorable experience.
When in San Francisco you must visit the
MMC.
Pictured left is Maury “Recon” Starr with
Peggy Leiphardt and her son Derek.
Derek along with his father Rick ( Pictured Right) are new members to the
Chapter. Derek is a LAPD Officer finishing up his probationary period in West
Valley Division. Rick is a retired LAPD
Motor Sergeant. Rick was the winner of
a canteen cup with a beautiful pewter
Eagle Globe and Anchor affixed to it .
The Chapter is fortunate to have members with connections. One member surprises' us each year
from some great gifts for the Movie Studios. This year was no exception. Max Felser brought
some great gifts from the Ellen Show. Who would of guessed there would be a Ellen fan base in
attendance. The Ellen prizes stirred up much excitement around the raffle table.
The big Ellen Prize winner was Sharon Mann who snagged at least two or perhaps three of the
Ellen gifts. You can see by the smile on her face she was very pleased. Her husband and Chapter
Director, Jim Mann was seen looking at his check book to see just how many tickets she bought
to win those prizes.
Emily Turner was also smiling having not only having won an Ellen gift but also the 50/50 prize
of $163, which she used part of to get more raffle tickets.
The big surprise was Bill Turner who turned out to be the biggest Ellen fan of all. We all
thought he would be giving his wife the Ellen shirt but instead he was overheard saying he was
going to wear it to next years Chapter Christmas Party.
Special thanks to Max Felser for providing the photos and the Ellen Gifts. Job Well Done Max!
