READINGS ABOUT PUBS (cooperative reading cards) PUBS The history of pubs can be found in Roman taverns but it was in the 19th Century that the modern pub was founded. Pubs are central to the culture of Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The owner of a pub is known as the ‘pub landlord’, people who go there very often are ‘regulars’ and they usually call their pub the ‘local’. Most pubs are open Monday-Saturday from 12-11pm and on Sundays from 12-10.30pm. Smoking indoors is banned. TYPES OF PUB A country pub is a pub that is found in small villages and in the countryside. They are the centre of the local community. Sadly, many have closed in recent years. Some pubs are part of a chain, a big company that runs many pubs, Wetherspoons and Slug & Lettuce are examples. You can go to many towns in the UK and find one of these pubs. Some pubs are themed such as karaoke pubs or Irish pubs. Also, you may sometime find arcade games or slot machines or jukeboxes in pubs. A jukebox is a machine from which you can select your favourite songs. Except some that serve a ploughman's lunch which is usually a sandwich containing Cheddar cheese, pickle, ham and butter.
