Evaluations include behavioral hearing assessments and physiologic evaluation of the ear (tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, and acoustic reflexes). Electrophysiologic assessment of the auditory system (auditory brainstem response or ABR/BAER) testing is also available. Our goal is to give families information and support for making informed decisions about treatment options, technology to improve hearing, and communication options. Campus Dr. Portland, OR 97239 The Craniofacial Disorders Clinic provides evaluation and ongoing care coordination for children with cleft palate (with or without cleft lip) or other craniofacial disorders from birth through adulthood. Early nursing consultation is critical for success of initial feeding efforts and is a unique feature of this clinic. The clinic specializes in naso-alveolar molding (NAM) to reconstruct the palate, and also placement of a temporary speech appliance (obturator) clinic. We offer nonsurgical treatment of children with velopharyngeal insufficiency. Children are referred to this clinic by their primary care provider. We provide emergency dental care to Doernbecher inpatients and will provide consultation, if requested by the child’s physician. The Pediatric Dental Surgery program is a joint effort supported by Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, OHSU School of Dentistry and private partners. The clinic was established to support other Doernbecher programs in the evaluation and treatment of special needs children. In addition to Doernbecher patients, we welcome referrals from private practitioners in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Our clinic is available for consultation and treatment including sedation and general anesthesia. We offer IV sedation services for patients with oral/dental needs that require short procedures. Campus Dr. Portland, OR 97239 The Down Syndrome Clinic offers expertise in health and medical issues commonly experienced by children with Down syndrome and their families. We offer comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessments of children with Down Syndrome from newborns up to age 21, including developmental and medical evaluations, as well as functional assessments, in order to develop individualized goals for optimal health and development. Education and support regarding Down Syndrome are provided, including referral to local organizations and to books and web-based information. The Poison Center staff includes doctors and nurses trained in toxicology. They utilize their professional expertise as well as an extensive variety of computer databases, textbooks and journal articles to determine the appropriate treatment guidelines for patients. A careful assessment of a patient’s condition as well as the substance of exposure is necessary before determining treatment recommendations. PANDA primarily serves Oregon and Southwest Washington and also has the capability to provide ground and air transport services to other geographical areas depending upon the needs of the patient. Most transports are for critically ill neonates and children from referring hospitals in Oregon and Southwest Washington to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) or Doernbecher Neonatal Care Center (DNCC). Referring providers who call for a transport will speak with the attending physician. A DNCC or PICU attending physician is available 24 hours day by telephone to initiate, triage and provide medical direction for each transport. We have a multidisciplinary approach to asthma, cystic fibrosis, and other lung and breathing conditions. We have an experienced staff of pediatric pulmonologists, nurses, dietitians, social workers, respiratory therapists, and speech pathologists. Common pulmonary disorders seen in this clinic include cystic fibrosis, asthma, pneumonia, congenital lung malformations, recurrent aspiration, neuromuscular disease and sleep apnea. Children are seen by a pediatric pulmonologist, either by referral from their primary care provider or by calling us directly. The Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory is the only facility in Oregon dedicated to children’s lung function testing. Doernbecher and OHSU also have Oregon’s only care center approved by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The digital technology is state-of-the-art and the most sophisticated in the Pacific Northwest. Radiology uses low-dose grid pulsed fluoroscopy, significantly reducing the radiation dose to patients. This department also has a unique cooperative effort with the Department of Anesthesiology, whose members perform and monitor sedation safely and efficiently. Our occupational therapy program focuses on helping children and youth participate in daily life activities, such as self-care, play and school-related activities. Interventions are designed to promote development, establish foundational skills and address sensorimotor processing. We provide individual, multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary evaluations. Our physical therapy program addresses the development and functional motor needs of children of all abilities who have difficulty moving because of injury, disease or other health conditions. Campus Drive Portland, OR 97239 Sedation Service The Pediatric Sedation Service provides safe, efficient sedation services in non-operating room locations as needed to facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Pediatric anesthesiologists work with sedation nurses to provide medical supervision and determine the level of care needed for the procedure or examination. Some procedures require very light sedation; others require deep sedation or general anesthesia. Sedation nurses provide the pre-procedure screening and education to help families and their children prepare for the sedation experience. The nurses also provide monitoring and recovery services. Portland, OR 97239 The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program is a multidisciplinary program involving physicians from child psychiatry, pediatric pulmonary medicine, general pediatrics and pediatric otolaryngology. The disorders treated include obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia, behavioral sleep disorders, parasomnias (sleep terrors and sleep walking) and delayed sleep phase syndrome. Sleep studies, such as polysomnograms and multiple sleep latency tests, are performed at the OHSU Sleep Lab. The lab is located at the Marriott Residence Inn at Riverplace, where we are able to simulate an at-home sleep environment. Treatments include education, behavioral interventions, pharmacotherapy and potentially surgery or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for sleep-disordered breathing. Clinic activities include prevention through case finding, diagnosis and evaluation. The team makes recommendations to primary care physicians regarding intervention, long term management and coordination of care. The program primarily serves children and young adults from birth through age 21. However, people with neural tube defects may be referred to the program at any age. The program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy and the National Marrow Donor Program. Our dedicated team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and associated health care staff specializes in caring for children and adolescents receiving blood stem cell or bone marrow transplantation. We treat patients with a variety of cancers and nonmalignant conditions such as immunodeficiencies, metabolic disorders and inherited blood disorders. Our urologists regularly provide surgical reconstruction of the penis, bladder, ureters and kidneys. We also provide care for children with exstrophy, hypospadias, epispadias, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux and many other abnormalities of the genitourinary tract. In addition, our pediatric urology program provides a voiding and incontinence clinic for children. This is especially important for those children with day and nighttime wetting and associated urinary tract infections. Conscious sedation is available for children who are anxious or who have had a bad experience with urological testing. Children are referred to this program by their primary care provider.
