July 1st Releases Overview There are only 2 recommended titles releasing the first week of the month neither of which is ranked in the Top 10 by the Purchasing Committee. Although it is a very light release week you still need to have new releases for your regular customers and these two titles are good low cost opportunities worth having. Adult World (Ranked #15) - Mongrel - A likeable cast (Roberts & Cusack) in a satirical coming of age comedy. Available in a Buy 3 & Save pack, which is the recommended quantity for most stores. Not available on Blu-ray. Rated 52% by Critics and 43% by Audience on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.1 on imdb. The Best Offer (Ranked #18) - Mongrel - A hit and multiple award winner on the European film festival circuit. Available in a Buy 3 & Save pack. Although a bit on the arthouse side, it’s worth having 2 to 3 copies. Not available on Blu-ray. Rated 55% by Critics and 76% by Audience on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.9 on imdb. July 8th Releases Overview There are 6 recommended titles releasing the second week of the month but only one (Bad Words) ranked in the Top 10 by the Purchasing Committee. Having a little depth of the recommended secondary titles IS A MUST given the weak slate of releases over the first four weeks. Bad Words (Ranked #6) - eOne Films - Jason Bateman’s directorial debut enjoyed a seven week but very limited theatrical release. Think Bad Santa meets Spellbound. A dark satiric and mean spirited comedy that will not appeal to your mainstream customer base but will appeal to heavy renter. Available on Bluray but not in a combo. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 63% by Critics and 70% by Audience on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.0 on imdb. The Raid 2 (Ranked #11) - eOne Films - Follow-up film (new story, same actors) to the 2011 action thriller. Action and violence overload. A little long on run time (2 1/2 hours) but it’s an over the top action film that delivers. A lack of star power and being Indonesian/Japanese language at times will result in not having to buy as deep for an action flick high ranked this high. Also available on Blu-ray but not in a combo. Rated 81% by Critics and 93% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.8 on imdb. Stage Fright (Ranked #21) - eOne Films - A horror mashup – slasher flick/musical. Think Glee meets Friday the 13th with more of an emphasis on the horror genre. Comparable to Repo: The Genetic Opera (2008). Limited theatrical release and Premium VOD title in May. Not available on Blu-ray. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 52% by Critics and 76% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.3 on imdb. In The Name of The King: Mark of the Dragon Warrior (Ranked #24) - Phase 4 - The third installment in the successful In the Name of the King franchise. Stars former Prison Break star Dominic Purcell. Low cost (about $13) means you can easily satisfy demand for this strong secondary flick with two or three copies. Available on Blu-ray but no combo. Not rated on Rotten Tomatoes and rated 3.3 on imdb. Run (Ranked #28) - Anderson - Parkour based crime thriller with a little romance. At approx. $10 per copy this is worth at least a copy or two at most. Stars William Moseley (aka Peter Pevensie from the Chronicles of Narnia films). Not available on Blu-ray. Not rated on Rotten Tomatoes and rated 4.6 on imdb. Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 (Ranked #29) - Mongrel - Very good ensemble cast. Directed by Lars von Trier (Melancholia, Antichrist). Two films released theatrically separately in one package - over 4 hours. Not for the mainstream customer as it’s an odd, lewd and graphic sexual odyssey. Volume 1 will rent much better but you get two movies for the price of one. Available on Blu-ray but not in a combo. Rated 76% by Critics and 75% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.3 on imdb. July 15th Releases Overview There are 6 recommended titles releasing the third week of the month but only 1 is ranked in the Top 10 by the Purchasing Committee. The #1 and pretty much only kids/family film (Rio 2) releasing this month hits shelves this week. The World Cup of Soccer concludes the weekend prior so business should pick up a little beginning on Tuesday. Don’t be caught short on copy depth for the three higher ranked secondary films releasing this week. Rio 2 (Ranked #3) - Fox - The #1 kids movie for the first half of the summer. Targeted for families and kids 12 and under. Brazilian theme ties into the closing of the final World Cup Game (July 13th). Plenty of colour and songs. Split the combos and reduce your average cost per copy. Available in a 3D Blu-ray and in a BD/DVD combo. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 47% by Critics and 65% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.8 on imdb. A Night in Old Mexico (Ranked #13) - Phase 4 - Stars the always reliable Robert Duvall in a lead role in this film with a western setting. Written and produced by William D. Wittliff, who wrote the screenplays for The Perfect Storm and Legends of the Fall. Definitely worth more than a few copies. Will have strong appeal with your older/core customer base. Low cost rental title for about $15. Not available on Blu-ray. Not rated on Rotten Tomatoes but rated 7.1 on imdb. The Face Of Love (Ranked #14) - Mongrel - A drama/romance with a strong cast (Bening/Harris/Williams) that will appeal to your older female customers. Enjoy cost effective copy depth with the Buy 3 & Save pack. Available on Blu-ray but not in a combo. Rated 42% by Critics and 49% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.3 on imdb. Gimme Shelter (2014) (Ranked #19) - Sony - Based on a true story. Good performance from Vanessa Hudgens and a strong supporting cast (Dawson/Fraser/Jones). Limited theatrical release. Not available on Blu-ray. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 22% by Critics and 74% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 on imdb. Road To Paloma (Ranked #25) - Anchor Bay - A biker road movie directed and starring Jason Momoa. A limited theatrical release in July that will be supported by WWE’s marketing machine. Definitely worth at least a copy or two on DVD. Available on Blu-ray but no combo. Not rated on Rotten Tomatoes but rated 7.6 on imdb. 13 Sins (Ranked #27) - eOne Films - A stylish, darkly funny and twisted remake of the 2006 Thai horror/thriller 13 Beloved. Think Saw meets The Box. Pretty good supporting cast that includes Ron Perlman. Not available on Blu-ray. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 56% by Critics and 50% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.2 on imdb. July 22nd Releases Overview There are 6 recommended titles releasing the fourth week of the month including 3 ranked in the Top 10 by the Purchasing Committee. Another weak release week with only a few films worth having more than a copy or two. Heaven is For Real (Ranked #5) - Sony - A family friendly faith based film based on the #1 New York Times best-selling book. Good cast appeal (Kinnear) Despite the estimated $80 million box office do not overbuy as this film will not be for everyone. It’s not too preachy but will still have stronger appeal to your Christian customer base. Available in a BD/DVD combo. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 49% by Critics and 76% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.6 on imdb. Sabotage (Ranked #7) - VVS Films - An action crime thriller starring Arnold and a good supporting cast (Worthington, Howard). Check your numbers on The Last Stand (released May 2013) which is the perfect comparable for this film. Available in a BD/DVD combo which you can split to add some cost effective depth to your DVD quantity. Rated 21% by Critics and 44% by Audience on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.4 on imdb. Dom Hemingway (Ranked #9) - Fox - A funny but dark British crime comedy in the vein of In Bruges and Sexy Beast with a terrific performance from Jude Law. Good supporting cast appeal (Richard E. Grant Demian Bichir and Emilia Clarke) as well. Only available on Blu-ray. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 60% by Critics and 40% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.3 on imdb. Tyler Perry's Single Mom's Club (Ranked #17) - eOne Films - A drama comedy that performed much worse than recent Tyler Perry fare. Despite the $16 million box office, you will not need more than a copy of this one unless the genre and/or Tyler Perry films perform well in your market. Rated 16% by Critics and 65% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.7on imdb. Zero Theorem, The (Ranked #26) - Mongrel - Directed by Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Twelve Monkeys, Brazil). Very imaginative and one of the director’s best films in years but will have limited appeal for mainstream audiences despite the very good star power (Waltz, Thewlis, Swinton). Available on Blu-ray but not in a combo. The 2 DVD + 1 Blu-ray will work best for average sized stores. Rated 53% by Critics and 95% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.6 on imdb. Justin and the Knights of Valor (Ranked #30) - Anderson - Other than Rio 2, this is the only other recommended kids/family film releasing this month. Reliable voice talent (Antonio Banderas). Will appeal to kids (mostly boys) 7 to 10. A copy or two on DVD is worth the investment. Available on Blu-ray but not in a combo. Rated 8% by Critics and 58% by Audience on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.0 on imdb. July 29th Releases Overview There are 10 recommended titles releasing the final week of the month including 5 ranked in the Top 10 (3 of the Top 4) by the Purchasing Committee. Be prepared to invest 50% of your monthly budget on titles releasing this week. With so many big titles releasing this week expect some studios to move/change release dates. Noah (Ranked #1) - Paramount - The unanimous #1 ranked film in July. Excellent star power (Crowe, Connelly, Hopkins, Watson, Winstone, Nolte). Epic film and story with amazing visual effects. Follows the source material but still features plenty of Hollywood. Available in a BD/DVD combo which you can split to add cost-effective DVD copy depth. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 77% by Critics and 44% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 on imdb. Other Woman, The (Ranked #2) - Fox - A hilarious female comedy that follows the path created by Bridesmads. This is a female buddy comedy and revenge flick that is not a romcom. Plenty of cast appeal for both women and men (Diax, Mann & Upton). Look for TBD EVP pack. Also available on Blu-ray and on Rentrak. Rated 24% by Critics and 68% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 on imdb. Transcendence (Ranked #4) - Warner - A sci-fi/fantasy with an excellent cast (Depp, Freeman) but a major box office disappointment that should perform much better on the small screen. Will engage some and be lost on others. Rental sku’s on both DVD ($16.99) & BD ($21.99). Order the DVD rental sku and split the BD/DVD combo to lower your average cost per copy. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 20% by Critics and 44% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.4 on imdb. Lullaby (Ranked #8) - Anderson - A sleeper drama with an award winning cast (Adams, Hudson, Howard). Excellent pick-up on DVD for under $16. Virtually all stores should have more than just a few copies of this one. Not available on Blu-ray. Not rated on Rotten Tomatoes or on imdb. Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It (Ranked #10) - eOne Films - The Boys (Julian, Ricky & Bubbles) are back in this mockumentary and they’re heading out on a road trip... and so is their huge fan following. The third film in the successful Canadian franchise. Under-performed theatrically which bodes well for the DVD/BD release. Available on Blu-ray but not in a combo. Rated 67% by Critics and 80% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.9 on imdb. Angriest Man In Brooklyn, The (Ranked #12) - VVS Films - A remake of the 1997 Israeli film, The 92 Minutes of Mr. Baum. This comedy has plenty of cast appeal (Williams, Kunis, Dinklage, Leo, Jones) and deserves more than just a copy or two. Split the BD/DVD combo to add cost-effective DVD copy depth. Not rated on Rotten Tomatoes or on imdb. Cuban Fury (Ranked #16) - eOne Films - A British feel-good comedy with a likeable cast that will appeal to both men and women. Most stores should bring in between 4 and 6 copies. Not available on Blu-ray. Also available on Rentrak. Rated 52% by Critics and 54% by Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 on imdb. Under The Skin (Ranked #20) - Mongrel - A Scarlett Johansson sci-fi flick that received multiple nominations and the British Independent Film Awards. The #1 sleeper film in July.
