Introduction This document outlines the standard procedure and rules pertaining to all The BONANZA School Challenge (BSC). The BSC Rules are designed to ensure that all BONANZA related competitions adhere to the same standards. All participants are expected to comply with the applicable sections of these rules while attending a BONANZA School Challenge. 2. BONANZA School Challenge Bonanza School Challenge (BSC) is an annual event organised by Daffodils Games and Publishing Limited (Daffodils GP) for Basic School students from Classes 4, 5, 6, and Junior Highs 1 and 2. It is meant to stimulate mental skills and the love for math among students in Primary and Junior High Schools in a more exciting way using the BONANZA Card game. With BSC, students compete in teams on the: Intra School Level: where students from the same school compete against each other; and Inter Schools Level: where students compete against students from other schools; either at the: a. Regional; and/or b. National Level 2.1 Objectives of the Competition The objective of the game is for team(s) to form positive whole numbers with the cards given them. The purpose of the competition is: a. To encourage practical learning among students; b. To sharpen their critical thinking, arithmetic skills and problem solving; and c. Promote a challenging and engaging learning experience that is fun and educative whiles stimulating the enthusiasm and love for arithmetics among students. 2.2 Participation Schools who wish to participate in the BONANZA School Challenge must first register their interest using the application form given to them. Anyone (schools/students) is/are allowed to participate in any sanctioned BONANZA School Challenge except for the following: Page | 2 a. Any school/student who has been suspended from participating in any BONANZA School Challenge events. b. Students who have direct relations to any staff of Daffodils GP. BONANZA School Challenge participants found to have deliberately provided false information will be disqualified. 3. The Competition Organiser The Competition Organiser is the overseer of the competition. Daffodils GP shall be responsible for all of the details of the BONANZA School Challenge. 3.1 Responsibilities: Securing the venue/location; Securing Advertisers and promoting the competition; Selecting the competition format and structure of the competition; Appoint a Game Commissioner for the competition; Provide the document that outlines the procedure and rules governing the competition; and Award prizes. 4. Game Commissioner The Game Commissioner shall be appointed by the Competition Organizer and perform the following functions: oversee to the smooth running and adherence of procedures and rules at the event shall make known to all, schools that have opted out of the competition coordinate with the Table Heads/Referees for fair and objective game play. confirm the results of the competition and declares the final winner(s). submit a detailed report of the competition to the Competition Organizer within 48 hours after the event. In the event where the Game Commissioner is absent, the Competition Organizer shall appoint a referee to act as one. 5. School Responsibilities: A school shall represent a competition with two (2) students at each level: Class 4, 5, 6, JHS 1 and 2; Select a coach for the team(s) with one alternate; Fill and endorse the application forms; Conform to the rules and procedure governing the competition; Provide each level with a sealed box of BONANZA Card game for the competition; Ensure their teams represent at the event in school uniforms; and Transport the teams to the competition grounds. Page | 3 6. Referee Responsibilities Competition Organisers shall select a Designated Contact person as a Referee. Each game table will have a table head/referee. The referee shall serve as a table head; Referees are expected to enforce the rules and procedure for all teams to adhere; Referees should avoid any action or decision that may create a perception of impartiality; Referees must be fair and objective; Referees are expected to encourage good sporting behaviour; Referees should have a stop watch; Referees shall signal the start game for teams to begin; Referees shall alert the teams 2 minutes before the five (5) minutes stop time; When the 5 minutes time is up, the referee(s) shall alert all team(s) to arrange(s) their 8 cards on the flat surface; and Referees shall calculate and record teams results on the Score Card. 7. Team Responsibilities Participants at BONANZA School Challenge are expected to understand and adhere to the rules outlined in this document, as well as any other accompanying documents that shall be issued by the Competition Organisers. Each team is required to use a sealed box of BONANZA Card Game at the start of the competition; All are expected to be respectful and courteous to each other; All teams are expected to be in their respective school uniforms; Show up to the competition and its subsequent rounds of play on time; and Exhibit professionalism, sportsmanship and fair play. Team(s) who is/are still not present by the start of the bell will be considered as conceded. 8. Spectator Responsibilities Schools are allowed to bring non-team and family members to the event and shall be classified as spectators. Spectators may watch a match but may not interfere with the competition in any way; Actions such as rude behaviour, assault, misdemeanour will not be entertained; Spectators should maintain a reasonable distance, as determined by the Competition Organisers, from competition in progress to avoid distracting the team(s); and Attire that contains rude, inappropriate messages or images are not to be worn at the BONANZA School Challenge grounds. Page | 4 9. Competition Area This shall be the area designated for the game plays. Team(s) are permitted to keep materials necessary to execute game play on the flat playing surface, such as pens, pencils, and notepads; Team(s) may also request for materials not allowed on the flat surface to be removed from the play area; Food is not allowed in the hall nor the competition area; Liquids in containers are allowed in the hall but not on the playing surface; and Spectators should maintain a reasonable distance, as determined by the Competition Organisers, from competition in progress. 10. Withdrawing from the Competition Team(s) are allowed to drop from the competition before it has concluded. Team(s) should inform the Referee/Table head of their intention; Referee will inform the Game Commissioner of the drop out team(s); Team(s) who drop out after pairings but before playing their match, will be given a match loss; and If a Team withdraws from the competition, winning points will be awarded to the opposing team. 11. Product for the competition BONANZA Card Game is the product to be used for the competition. 11.1 Content of the BONANZA Card Game A pack of BONANZA card game contains 63 playing cards and made up of: 5 Starting Cards (cards with numbers but no arithmetic symbols); 18 cards with a number and the plus (+) symbol on it; 18 cards with a number and the minus (-) symbol on it; 11 cards with a number and the multiply (x) symbol on it; and 11 cards with a number and the divide (÷) symbol on it. 12. The Game Type The game type for the competition shall be BONANZA Classic. In this game type, teams have the same 8 cards in their possession; that is seven (7) cards with numbers and Page | 5 arithmetic symbols and one (1) Starting Card. They are to use the 8 cards to form Positive Whole Numbers. Players/Teams will draw the 8 cards from their own deck of cards. Teams MUST always begin their maths sentence with the STARTING CARD. In short, when playing BONANZA CLASSIC the first card to start the maths sentence should always be a card without an arithmetic symbol on it (yellow color coded). 13. Card Shuffling and Distribution: Referee/Table head is responsible for shuffling the cards. The Referee/table head takes out 5 starting cards (cards with numbers but no arithmetic symbol) out of one team’s deck of cards. The referee/table head then shuffles remaining 58 cards with numbers and arithmetic symbols (operator) on them and picks the first top 7 cards and 1 starting card; Referee/table head shows the picked cards for all teams to see; All teams then pick same cards from their own deck of cards with the same arithmetic operator/symbol and number as shown by the referee; Players put the unused cards into the game box; and The referee gives the signal to start. 14. Winner Rules The following winner rules are employed in the BONANZA School Challenge: a. SUNRISE RULE: With this Rule, the team with the highest score at the end of the round scores the highest points. b. SUNSET RULE: With this Rule, the team with the lowest score at the end of the round scores the highest points. 15. Penalties The following constitute penalties: Any disruption or given answer(s) from spectator(s) not participating in the competition will/may result in the corresponding school being penalised. Page | 6 A team will be penalized if found guilty of possessing different cards during the game play. A penalty attracts a 10 points deduction. A team(s) scores zero (0) if unable to form their math sentence at the given time or after the referee sees a miscalculation. 16. Tie Breaking When two or more team(s) tie with the same points, there will be one round of game play for a Winner to emerge. In the event where there is a tie, this game play shall be employed: Players/teams have the same (7) cards with numbers and arithmetic symbols but different starting cards (one each). Teams form whole numbers with the 8 cards dealt them; seven (7) cards with numbers and arithmetic symbols and one (1) starting card. Teams MUST always begin their sentence with the STARTING CARD. That is, the first card put down by the players/teams, or the first card to start the sentence should always be a card without an arithmetic symbol on it. 17. Point Scoring System (PSS) Players/Teams shall be awarded points at the end of each round of game play. Declaring Winner After all rounds of game played, the referee shall total teams’ accrued points. The Game Commissioner shall confirm the results and declare the Winners of the Competition. The team with the highest points is declared the winner. 19. Publishing Competition Information Daffodils Games and Publishing Limited (Daffodils GP) reserves the right to make competition information and results public.
