Most computers for purchase are set up to log in
as the Administrator.
• Most people don’t know how to set up their computers
any other way.

Benefit of logging in as a “Standard” user
(Windows 7 or 8) or “Limited” user (Windows XP)
• You cannot install new software or make system
changes as a Standard user

A hacker who takes over your PC can’t install malicious
software on your PC when you are logged in as a Standard
user, because they need to log in as administrator.
• You can lend your computer out to someone

with less concern they will mess around with your settings or

say you have been using the original
Administrator account that came with your
PC… so to protect your PC you now want to:

Create a new Administrator account
• Make sure to give it a password… a simple easy to
remember password is fine

Change your original Administrator acct to a
Standard User
• This preserves your original desktop settings, program
settings, etc. You want your new Standard account to
have the same settings as your original Administrator
account

1) Create a new Administrator account
• Give it a password. Name it “Admin-xxx”
2) Change your original Administrator account to
a Standard User
• Keep the same name (usually “User”) you had as
Administrator


Give it a password if multiple users will use PC
Keep the same name, because if you change account name,
then your existing “My Documents” parent folder name will
not match your new user name:
