would throw garbage
into the downtown Sapang Balen creek, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan
issued yesterday a
stern warning to business establishments
and households which
still use waterway into
a dumpsite that eventually flows into the Manila Bay through other
Pampanga towns.
Pamintuan has put
up steel grills along the
bridges across the
creek in barangays Cutcut, Sta. Trinidad, Pampang, San Nicolas, Sto.
Rosario, San Jose, Pulungbulo and Sto. Domingo to prevent local folk
from throwing wastes
into the channel.
But he noted that
“there are still business
establishments and
even residential houses
with sewerage systems
draining into the creek.”

BALANGA CITY – Bataan on Sunday held its 1st Invitational Airsoft match with participants coming from Pampanga and Bataan who engaged in combat at the Bataan
National High School here.
Jimmy Mangalindan, organizer of the event, said
that more than 100 players from Pampanga and Bataan
that included students from the Maritime Academy of
Asia and the Pacific in Mariveles, Bataan joined the
game.
The Bataan group is a member of the Bataan Extreme Airsoft Special Troops while those from Lubao,
Florida Blanca and Sasmuan in Pampanga belong to
Balasik.
“Magandang libangan ito na nagtuturo ng disiplina
at responsableng paghawak ng tunay na baril at naglalayo sa droga at iba pang bisyo,” Mangalindan said.
He said that only a handful started the hobby in
Bataan some 10 years ago. “There are now more than
100 of us in the province,” he said.
“Kapag hindi nasaktan, hindi enjoy sa laro,” said
Balasik president Lito Limpin as he showed the marks
on his stomach hit by Airsoft pellets in close combat.
Other players showed marks of pellets on their hands.
“Mahapdi ng kaunti,” they said.
Limpin said they have been playing the game in Pampanga for seven years. “Magastos,” he said in a jest.
Erza Tanciongco was the youngest player from
Bataan at 13 years old. He has been playing Airsoft for
six months. “I enjoy the game,” the boy said.
The rule of the game is honesty. One who got hit
raises his hand with the rifle and leaves the combat
area.

send-off rites for Arreza

Bulacan can now use their mobile
phones to screen amputee patients in
need of prosthetics.
Smart Communications, Inc.
(Smart) recently conducted a training
on the use of ASCENT (Amputee
Screening via CEllphone NeTworking),
an application that allows health workers to key in patient information on a
cell phone and send the data to a centralized web-based database via multimedia message, along with photos
taken with the cell phone camera.
The application, developed by the
Ateneo Java Wireless Competency
Center for Smart, enables doctors to
evaluate cases and give advice on the
use of prosthesis for amputees even
before seeing the patients.
The activity was part of the “Free
Training and Screening for Persons
with Disabilities” organized by the University of the Philippines – Philippine
General Hospital (UP-PGH), Physi-
cians for Peace (PfP) -Philippines and
Barangay Graceville in coordination
with the office of Interior and Local
Governments Secretary Jesse Robredo through San Jose del Monte District Rep. Arthur B. Robes and his wife
Rida.
ASCENT is Smart’s contribution to
the Walking Free Program of the PfP–
Philippines and partner UP-PGH.
Since 2005, the program has been
serving indigent amputees nationwide
through screening and prosthesis service missions, and by making prosthesis more affordable to the beneficiaries.
In providing ASCENT, Smart hopes
to highlight the breakthrough benefits of
mobile phone technology to health care,
particularly in remote, underserved communities where there are few doctors
and specialists and patients have to travel far and spend for the trip.
Smart’s efforts to provide wireless
solutions to help improve health services are part of its corporate social

Kicking off the celebration on September 17
is the International Coastal Clean-up, spearheaded

clean-up drive to protect

On September 21, a
motorcade from the waterfront road in Subic Freeport to nearby Olongapo
City marks the onset of

President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers
vested upon me by Article VII, Section 10, Paragraph
(‘2) of the Constitution, do hereby place the entire
Philippines as defined in Article I, Section 1 of
the Constitution under martial law and, in my
capacity as their commander-in-chief, do hereby
command the armed forces of the Philippines, to
maintain law and order throughout the Philippines,
prevent or suppress all forms of lawless violence as
well as any act of insurrection or rebellion and to
enforce obedience to all the laws and decrees, orders
and regulations promulgated by me personally or upon
my direction.
In addition, I do hereby order that all persons
presently detained, as well as all others who may
hereafter be similarly detained for the crimes of
insurrection or rebellion, and all other crimes and
offenses committed in furtherance or on the occasion
thereof, or incident thereto, or in connection therewith,
for crimes against national security and the law of
nations, crimes against public order, crimes involving
usurpation of authority, rank, title and improper use of
names, uniforms and insignia, crimes committed by
public officers, and for such other crimes as will be
enumerated in Orders that I shall subsequently
promulgate, as well as crimes as a consequence of
any violation of any decree, order or regulation
promulgated by me personally or promulgated upon
my direction shall be kept under detention until
otherwise ordered released by me or by my duly
designated representative.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the
Philippines to be affixed.

IF WE accept life as struggle, and history as the continuing struggle
for freedom, we realize the necessity of revolution, and for that,
the imperative of a militant creed.
I believe, therefore, in the necessity of Revolution as an
instrument of individual and social change, and that its end is the
advancement of human freedom.
I believe that only a reactionary resistance to radical change
will make a Jacobin, or armed revolution, inevitable, but that in a
democratic society, revolution is of necessity, constitutional,
peaceful and legal.
I believe that while we have utilized the presidential powers to
dismantle the violent revolution and its communist apparatus, we
must not fail our people; we must replace the violent revolution
with the authentic revolution – liberal, constitutional and peaceful.
I believe in democracy as the continuing revolution; that any
other revolution is unjustified if it cannot meet the democratic
criterion.
I believe that even if a society should be
corrupted by an unjust economic or social
system, this can be redressed by the people,
directly or indirectly, for democracy has the powers
of self-rejuvenation and self-correction.
I believe that in this troubled present,
revolution is a fact, not merely a potential threat,
and that if we value our sacred rights, our cherished
freedoms, we must wrest the revolutionary
leadership from those who would, in the end turn
the democratic revolution into a totalitarian regime.
I believe that in our precarious democracy,
which tends towards an oligarchy because of the
power of the wealthy few over the impoverished
many, there remains a bright hope for a radical
and sweeping change without the risk of violence.
I do not believe that violent revolution is either
necessary or effective in an existing democracy.
I believe that our realization of our common
peril, our complete understanding of our national
condition, will unite us in a democratic revolution
that will strengthen our democratic institutions and
offer, finally, our citizens the opportunity of making
the most and the best of themselves.
I believe that democracy is the revolution, that
it is today’s revolution. This is my fighting faith.
CRAFTED ON September 7, 1971 in his
Today’s Revolution: Democracy, that credo served
as the foundation of a New Society established a
year after by Ferdinand Edralin Marcos. And the
rest, as clichéd, is history.
September 21,1972. Martial Law. Never again,
so easy to say. But come to think of it, aren’t the
above premises as true today as they were 39
long years ago?
Santayana calls out from the grave: “Those
who do not remember the past are condemned to
repeat it.”
Duly seconded by Hegel: “What experience
and history teach is this – that people and
governments never have learned anything from
history, or acted on principles.”
And Marx for the closing: “History repeats
itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”
The postscript though in an Irish saying: “There
is no present, there is no future. Only the past
happening over and over.”
Dumb as we are, so damned shall we ever be.
What the devil
BUT who ever takes the devil
seriously?
Most people say they believe in God, regardless of whether they have carved some other
diety they have suited to their
convenience or passions, but
they’re likely to shrug shoulders
when asked about the devil. The
impression is that’s for Holloween with its cheers over costumes and television shows and
cartoons of mischievous but cute
black-costumed creatures with
horns and tails.
My favourite Padre Pio website, however, warns: Watch
Out. “ It seems the mentality of
people today is to relegate the
figure of the Devil into ancient
mythology and folklore. Baudelaire justly affirms that ‘The Masterpiece of Satan in the Modern
Time’ is to have people believe
he does not exist.”
Is denial of hell any farther
from one who says the devil is
mere fiction? If both devil and hell
are fiction, should not mortal sin
also be up for the shredder?
Alas, historical accounts left
by many saints attest to the reality of the devil.
Take a look at the lives of
saints when they were still earthtrapped. Many of them had actual encounters with devils, even
satan himself, the kind of stuff
that horror movies could land in
box office list. Their experiences, however, were real.
Let’s consider Padre Pio
whose clashes with the devil at
times turned out violent and
bloody. Many of these encounters were related by Padre Pio
in his letters to his spiritual fa-
thers.
One night in 1906 in the convent of Saint Elia of Pianisi, Padre Pio could not fall asleep and
heard the footsteps of someone
coming from a nearby room. He
thought it was Friar Anastacio’s
steps but when he peeked out
the window to call out for him,
he saw a monstrous dog of the
window ledge. Smoke ensued
from the dog’s mouth and, as it
espied the Padre, remarked “It
is him, it is him.” The dog
jumped to Padre’s window
ledge, then to the roof and then
vanished.
"The Devil appeared as
young girls that danced naked,
as a crucifix, as a young friend
of the monks, as the Spiritual
Father or as the Provincial Father; as Pope Pius X, a Guardian Angel, as St. Francis and as
Our Lady,” Padre Pio wrote.
At other times, Padre “was
troubled with deafening noises
and covered with spittle, etc.”
But “ Padre Pio succeeded in
freeing himself from these attacks of the Devil by invoking the
name of Jesus,” said one website.
In a letter to Padre Agostino,
dated January 18, 1912, Padre
Pio said, “The Devil does not
want to lose this battle. He
takes on many forms. For several days now, he has appeared
with his brothers who are armed
with batons and pieces of iron.
One of the difficulties is that they
appear in many disguises. There
were several times when they
threw me out of my bed and
dragged me out of my bedroom.
I am patient, however, and I know

In yet another letter to Padre
Agostino dated November 5,
1912, he said: “Dear Father, this
is, by the mercy of God, my

that the demons, impure apostates, are making on me. My
father, they cannot win because
of my constancy. I must tell you
about the traps they set for me,
and how they tempt me to ignore your suggestions. I find
your letters to be my only my
comfort; and I glorify God that
they serve to confuse them. I
cannot explain to you how severely they are attacking me.
Sometimes I think I‘m going to
die. Saturday I thought they really wanted to kill me, I didn’t
know which saint to ask for help.
I turned to my angel, but he deliberately delayed. At last he

Ito ang sinabi ni Tatay, dating Senador Wigberto Tañada, nang
inisponsor niya ang Senate Resolution 1259 na nagpaalis sa mga
sundalong Amerikano sa kanilang mga base military sa ating bansa.
Naging makasaysayan ang araw na iyon — ika-16 ng Setyembre,
1991 — kung saan sa botong 12-11 sa Senado, tinapos ng Pilipinas
ang pamamalagi ng mga sundalong Amerikano sa ating bansa.
Sa isang desisyon ng Senado, ang lahing Pilipino ay nagwagi
at inangkin na ating lahi ang tunay na soberenya.
Samakatwid ang desisyong maging tunay na malaya ay nasa
ating mga kamay pa rin!
Makaraan ang walong taon, noong ika 27 ng Mayo, 1999,
nagkasundo ang Pilipinas at Amerika upang magsagawa ng joint
military exercises, tinaguriang Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA)
sa ikabubuti diumano ng kapwa kasundaluhan, lalo na sa Pilipinas.
Subalit batay sa mga kaganapan, para bang naisahan ang mga
Pilipino sa kasunduan. Tila kumagat muli sa nakaumang na pain
ang mga Pinoy. Di na tayo natuto.
Dahil sa VFA, narito na naman sa bansa ang mga sundalong
Amerikano para sa joint military exercises, wala na nga lang sila
sa Clark at Subic subali’t pwede silang palipat-lipat ng lugar.
Ilang taon pa lang ang nakalipas, nalimutan
na natin ang dinanas na hirap ng mga makabayan
nating lider sa pagpapaalis sa base military ng
US noon. Ang pagpapatalsik sa kanila 20 taon
na ang nakaraan ay resulta ng ilang dekadang
pakikibaka upang tuluyan nang mawaksi ang mga
palatandaan ng kolonyalismo sa bansa.
Naging mahalaga ang papel na ginampanan
ng aking lolo Lorenzo M. Tañada sa naturang
pakikibaka. Sa mahabang panahon, mula noong
1950s hanggang 1990s, nakilala si lolo bilang
isang palaging kinakalaban ang interes ng mga
Amerikano pati na rin ang ibang dayuhan. Kung
tutuusin, hindi talaga ito “anti-America o foreign
intervention”. Bagkus, ang postura at ang
pagpoposisyon ng aking Lolo ay bunga ng
pagmamahal sa ating bayan at pagsulong ng ating
tunay na kalayaan.
Ano pa nga ba, gaya nina Lolo at Tatay, lumaki
na rin akong kumikilala sa mga lansangan bilang
mga kanlungan ng mga makabayan na walang
takot na magpahayag ng nilalaman ng kanilang
puso, isip, at damdamin.
At ngayon, sa mga balikat ng ating
kasalukuyang henerasyon nakasandig ang
pakikibaka tungo sa pag-angkin muli ng ating
integridad at soberenya bilang bansa.
Kaya inihain ko ang House Joint Resolution
No. 17 na naglalayon na iwaksi ang VFA.
Ako ay naniniwala na dahil sa VFA, bumalik
tayo sa pagkakagapos sa mga kagustuhan ng
US.
Kung noon, habang nandito sila ay nasa loob
sila ng kanilang kampo, at doon sila namamalagi,
ngayon sila ay narito muli, nasa labas nga lang
ng dating kampo.
Totoo tayo nga ang nag-okupa sa dating mga
US facilities. Ngunit sa pamamagitan ng VFA,
pinayagan natin silang bumalik sa bansa at
magsagawa ng mga pagkilos bilang mga
sundalong Amerikano.
Kasabay ng mga obserbasyong nabanggit,
narito ang ilang paglalabag ng US sa ating
soberenya at integridad:
Ang US soldier na si Reggie Lane ay iniugnay
sa pagbaril kay Buyong Buyong Isnijal, isang
magsasaka sa Tuburan, Basilan noong 2002.
Ayon sa mga eyewitnesses ng massacre sa
Umapoy, Island, Tawi-Tawi noong ika-25 ng Mayo,
2004, di kukulang sa apat na sundalong Amerikano
ang naging bahagi sa isinagawang joint policemilitary raid.
Sino ang makakalimot kay Lance Corporal
Daniel Smith, isa ring sundalong Amerikano na
convicted sa kasong rape sa isang hukuman sa
Makati City. Makaraan ang kanyang conviction,
siya ay naditini lamang sa US Embassy, at di
naparusahan sa ilalim ng mga batas sa bansa.
Makaraan ang ilang buwan siya’y na-acquit ng
Court of Appeals at nakabalik na sa kanyang bansa.
Mapapansin ding walang malinaw sa VFA
hinggil sa dami ng sundalong Amerikano na
maaaring pumasok sa bansa, maging ang
limitasyon kung gaano sila katagal maaaring
manatili sa bansa sa panahon ng kanilang mga
pagsasanay. Sa pananaw ko ito ay paglalabag
sa ating territorial integrity.
At nakababahala din ang mga balitang
nakikibahagi sa ilang combat operations ang mga
US soldiers, kahanay ang AFP at PNP troops.
Sa pagtatapos, mainam na banggitin ang
sinabi ni Tatay hinggil sa usaping ito: “What needs
to be re-stated is that we did not boot out US
military bases in 1991 only to invite our old
masters back on our shores. We did not reclaim
Subic and Clark and make them boom with
business and economic activity only to turn back
the clock to a shameful past of inequality and
mendicancy.”
Hinihikayat ko ang aking mga kasama sa
Kongreso na suportahan ang ating layunin na
gawing buong-buo ang ating kalayaan, soberenya,
at integridad bilang bansa sa pamamagitan ng
pagwaksi sa Visiting Forces Agreement. Talo ang
bansa sa VFA.
Ang pagiging tunay na malaya ay kaya nating
isagawang muli. Pagkat ito’y nasa ating mga
kamay pa rin!

‘Gay’ shoots self...

City and his alleged boyfriend Jonathan Salvador
of Meycuayan, Bulacan.
Perez allegedly shot
Salvador twice in the
head before turning his
.22 calibre pistol to shoot
himself also in the head.
They were rushed to the
San Fernandino Hospital
where they were said to
be in critical condition.
It was the second
“crime of passion” to occur in malls, following
the shooting of a man by
his spurned wife last
week at a mall in Quezon City.
The source said that
Emerson used a .22 calibre gun in the shooting.
Two spent shell of the pistol was found in the site
and reports that a suicide
note was also found in
the pocket of his pants.
A public relations officer of the mall could not
immediately provide details on the incident, but
said that as of 1:30 p.m.

EdPam asks for help in cleanup of creek

Bishop Virgilio Pablo David put a curse on local folk
who would continue to pollute the Sapang Balen
creek. He announced the
curse on a megaphone as
he walked along the banks
of the creek, together with
volunteers in his clean-up
drive.
“Magmula sa araw na
ito, binibigyan ko ng sumpa ang Sapang Balen. Sinuman ang lalapastangan
nito ay magiging malas sa
buhay (From this day on,
I am putting a curse on
Sapang Balen. Whoever
dares to show disrespect
to it will be unlucky in life),”
said David who has remained involved in the antipollution drive in this city.
A blog put up by David’s Holy Rosary Parish
then asked: “Why would
a bishop go to this extent
to help revive a waterway?”
and then quoted the bishop’s answer: “The river has
life and anyone who dumps
garbage without compunction is killing it slowly. Laws
and ordinances do not
seem to work at all; people just ignore these. Let
us see how they will react
to a curse from a bishop.”
Since then, pollution of
the creek was significantly reduced.
“This must be stopped
and we need to implement
the law at its fullest. The
creek has become a
dumping site of pollutants
and this has to be addressed immediately,”
Pamintuan stressed.
He urged all Angeleños
to join him in his effort to
“rid the said creek of filth,
effluents and other pollutants. We must act and
move together to save our
waterways.”
“It will be volunteerism
again just like what we did
in 1992 when lahar threatened us here. That time,
25,000 Angeleños got together to pack 250,000
protective sandbags,” the
mayor said.
Pamintuan had served
three terms as mayor in
the 1990’s soon after Mt.
Pinatubo erupted in 1991.
He also appealed to
barangay officials and residents along Sapang
Balen to be “vigilant and be
more caring of the creek
that was once crystal
clear.”
Earlier this month, the
city governments of Angeles and San Fernando
signed a commitment
agreement on the cleanup of waterways and tributaries in lined with the
Supreme Court’s order to
rehabilitate Manila Bay.

He recalled that fishermen and local residents
then used 20 motorized
boats to block the barge
from passing through the
Binuangan River and succeeded in forcing the garbage contractor to go back
to Manila.
The militant group likewise asked the influential
Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines
(CBCP) to protest the harassment of Hizon by
Obando police and conduct its own investigation
on the incident.
“We appeal to the `117
archbishops and bishops
of the CBCP to come to
the picture and unleash
divine intervention to stop
bad people like the Obando chief of police from terrorizing anti-landfill folks.
The Obando top cop is
undeniably working for the
commercial profiteers behind the dumpsite,” said
Pamalakaya.
Pamalakaya said the
Obando landfill is one of
the controversial yet most
protected landfills in the
country. The group noted
that in 2006, Orlando de
Vera, a local Pamalakaya
leader who had opposed
the landfill, was gunned
down by alleged members
of the military inside his

ORDER
A verified petition has been filed by the petitioner praying that after
due notice, publication and hearing, this court renders judgment ordering
the respondents, Local Civil Registrar of Angeles and the Civil Registrar
General, to correct the entry in petitioner’s Certificate of Live Birth
particularly the gender from male to female.
Finding the petition to be sufficient in due form and substance, the
court hereby sets the hearing thereof on October 18, 2011 at 2:00 o’clock
in the afternoon to be held at the Session Hall of this Court, 2/F Hall of
Justice, Pulung Maragul, angeles City after this Order shall have been
published in a newspaper of general circulation in Angeles City and
Pampanga for three (3) consecutive weeks at the expense of the
petitioner.
All persons interested in the said petition may appear before this
Court on or before the scheduled date and show cause, if they have
any, why the prayer thereof should not be granted.
The petitioner is hereby directed to furnish copies of the Petition and
iits annexes the Office of the City Prosecutor, Angeles City, Office of the
Solicitor General, Makati City, the Civil Registrar General, the Civil
Registrar of Angeles City within ten (10) days upon receipt hereof and to
submit to the court proof of compliance.
Furnish copies of hereof the respoindents, the Office of the Clerk of
Court, RTC, Angeles City, the petitioner and her counsel.

HINDI tinanggihan ni Hayden Kho ang imbitasyon Philippine Movie Press Club sa kanilang Stars For A Cause na ginanap sa Skydome
ng North SM noong isang araw. Isa si Hayden sa mga special guests na nagpaunlak din ng interview sa mga press at tv crew na
nakisaya sa naturang okasyon.
Game si Hayden sa lahat ng mga katanungan puwera lang yung tungkol kay Katrina Halili, at yung sa kasal nila ni Dr. Vicki Belo.
“Wala po kayong makukuha sa akin pagdating sa kasal namin, secret nga po ‘yun at hanggang maaari, ayaw naming parehong
magsalita tungkol diyan. I am happy, at last, sa kasal magsisimula ang aming bagong buhay, pero pasensya na kayo, hindi ko
puwedeng pangunahan ang mga pangyayari. Sapat na po siguro yung pareho naman naming inaaming pakaksal na kami in due time,
hanggang doon lang po, sana you can be happy with that.

mismo sa Philippine Regulation Commission.
Kung ganoon nga naman, tiyak na alam ng kampo ni Hayden kung ano ang eksaktong gagawin. Sa rami ng kanyang pera, hindi
titigil ang kampo ni Hayden at Vicki Belo hangga’t di nababawi ang lisensyang binawi dahil sa pambabalahura niya ng maraming babae
sa showbiz.

“Someone should have adviced Mark na
dapat hindi na lang siya rumampa kasi he’s
not prepared,” sabi pa nito.
“Unang-una, hindi naman buff ang katawan
niya like kina Rocco, Enzo Pineda and Aljur
Abrenica. Naturingang siya ang most senior
sa kanila, pero siya ‘yung hindi
inaalagaan nang husto ang katawan
niya. Even his performance when
he danced, kulang sa libog at

THE PHILIPPINES’ largest national flag carrier,
Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB)
adds four more weekly
flights to its direct ManilaKuala Lumpur service,
making it double daily
starting January 8, 2012.
CEB currently operates
a daily service that leaves
Manila at 8:55pm, and a
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday service that leaves
Manila at 10:10am.
The additional four times
weekly Manila-Kuala Lumpur-Manila flights will depart
Manila at 2:00pm every
Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The return
flight will depart Kuala Lumpur at 6:30pm.
“We are happy to finally increase our flight frequencies to Kuala Lumpur,
given the strong demand
for direct flights from Manila, not Clark which is two
hours away. CEB flights
will offer more flight schedule options to business
and leisure travelers for
their convenience in January,” said CEB VP for Mar-
keting and Distribution
Candice Iyog.
Iyog said that CEB
holds a Malaysia seat
sale from September 2021, 2011 or until seats last.
For travel from October
15, 2011 to February 29,
2012, passengers can buy
seats as low as P488 from
Manila to Kota Kinabalu.
Meanwhile, they can also
buy Manila-Kuala Lumpur
seats for P1,488, for travel from October 15 to December 31, 2011.
“Flights from Malaysia
to Manila are also on sale,
for as low as MYR 134
(from Kuala Lumpur) and
MYR 94 (from Kota Kinabalu). CEB will continue to
boost tourism and trade in
the destinations it flies to
with its trademark lowest
fares,” she added.
