I bet you can remember exactly where you were, what you were doing and with whom you were when you heard the news. Although the day was a tragic one, it also showed the best in many, as tales of compassion, courage and kindness abounded on 9/11. Strangers helping strangers, firemen, police officers and emergency crews knowingly risking their own lives in order to help someone else. But I wouldn’t want to end on that note; I would rather focus on the amazing people who did incredible things that day. To reflect, not on the way that victims died, but in how they lived their lives. I watched and listened to the experiences of the survivors of the tragedy and they deserve to wear a smile in their heart. Not because of what they have experienced or how they survived, but because we all know that GOD is always here for us. Life really changes each day; but GOD is always doing amazing miracles for us. Maybe it was also a sign or message from GOD for us to act and change our lives and habits. Though change is hard because people overestimate the value of what they have and underestimate the value of what they may gain by giving that up. Some people don’t resist change but mostly resist being changed. We have to remember that our success in life isn’t based on our ability to simply change. It is based on our ability to change faster and apply it in our daily lives in dealing with friends, relationships, family members, works and customers in business. The encouraging thing is that every time you meet a situation, though you may think at the time it is hopeless and you go through the tortures of the lost, once you have met it and lived through it you find that forever after you are freer than you ever were before. If you can live through that you can live through anything. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, `I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ The danger lies in refusing to face the fear, in not daring to come to grips with it. On the other note, in this year’s Ms. Universe competition, we are proud to announce and let the world know that our very own Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup didn’t disappoint the Filipinos and her fans around the world on the 60th Miss Universe 2011 beauty pageant. She was included in the top 5 among the 89 beauty queens and was crowned as 3rd runner up with Miss Angola winning the crown. Aside from Ms. SupSup another talented and beautiful Filipina was also part of the prestigious competition. Broadway actress and singer, Ms. Lea Salonga was part of the board of judges of the search which was held at Sao Paolo Brazil. Shamcey got within arm’s length from the crown but still drew cheers befitting a queen. Aside from being beautiful our country’s 25- year- old candidate, was a UP magna cum laude and topnotcher in the 2010 architecture board exams. So it was really an honor and we Filipinos stand proud with the accomplishment of our beauty and brains kababayan. Her accomplishment paves way for other nations to come to appreciate not just the beauty of the people but that of our country. The most important thing in any competition is not just winning but taking part; and the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well. We are proud to say that we Filipinos have given them a good fight. Mabuhay ang Lahing Pilipino! Happy reading, Arnold P. Libao Eight out of ten OFW’s want to own business when they go home for good, but unsure which idea is best for them, secondly, they don’t know how and where to begin. Have you once dreamed of becoming a franchisee and owning one shop or perhaps more operating under nationally recognized brand? Today, you cannot walk down any major street anywhere in the world and not pass by some business that is part of a franchise network. Founded in 1997 by a pioneering group of entrepreneurs, the Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI) in cooperation with Philippine Alliance Hong Kong (PAHK), and Pinoy Investors and Savers Organization (PISO) conducted a successful “Filipino Franchising Fair” last August 27 & 28, 2011 at Bayanihan Centre, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong. It aims to reach out and empower the OFW’s to become a family sustaining – nation- building entrepreneurs. Power packed seminar main speaker was AFFI President Paulo Tibig. He talked about personal experiences, the opportunities, failures and key inspirations of owning a business. Meanwhile, AFFI Chairman Tess Laurel shared tips on how to identify a credible franchise with an established reputation, proven system and profitability. likewise to Cebu Pacific, Public Finance, TP3, Pioneer Insurance, Pacific Management Company, RCBC, PNB and Rozglow for sponsoring the event. Are you planning to retire? Its been 15 years ( ? ) since you receive the first passport visa stamp bound to a place called “ green land” (over- seas). Today, you are looking over the window and seeing that the grass is greener on the other side….the grass is own by the folks who own their businesses. So how much pastures you want to realize? Mr. Paulo Tibig said “ You can chart your own destiny by being your own boss.” Partial presenters of AFFI’s more than one hundred franchising companies were Goto King, Plato Wraps, Lots A pizza, Peanut World, Chicarific, VCargo, Ahead, along with Crystal Clear, Sea oil, and Generika, the top target brands of OFW groups’ would-be- franchisers. With a little or no knowledge in franchising, you can build upon your professional background or enter a new field from cart to storefront, or traditional office, on site or home-based business, initial capital start from P120K to 3M up. The Philippine bankers Club headed by RCBC and PNB gave support and offered financial assistance to SME loan franchisors. “Go home as an asset not liability. Make life for yourself and others…” said Labor Attache Sir Manuel Roldan who cheerfully dropped by at the fair. Hon. Consul Claro Cristobal also came and delivered encouraging message to the participating OFWs. For the humble earners, the best sort of change is self- driven and group - generated. Upholding to positive thinking and leadership PAHK Chairman Joey Ortega and PISO Pres. Jenny Gafate plan to purchase a model business franchise for the group and thus continue to hold business trainings to equip the 108 affiliated associations’ members. PAHK expressed gratitude for the inspiring initiative of AFFI, and 6 friends International Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011 7 friends International Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011 Prime Gems – PrimeCredit and Prime Gold’s new exclusive club for OFWs Prime Gems is a proud partner of the following merchants who provide beneficial offers to Prime Gems members: • PrimeCredit and Prime Gold held a successful launching program of its newest loyalty club called “Prime Gems” last August 14, 2011 at Eaton Smart Hotel. Part 1: Some Natural Treatment and Skin Care Tips to Prevent Acne Ano ba ang Acne? Acne is a frequent skin condition that affects people of all ages, pero ang mas mataas ang porsyento nito ay sa mga adults at teenagers. Some people suffer from it more than others do. Ang Acne 10 ay maraming iba’t-ibang pinagmumulan . Maari na ito ay resulta ng allergic reaction sa medications o food, diet, lack of sleep, lack of water, hormones cycles, and stress can also cause acne to arise. Different people with different routine and backgrounds – are different cases. Ito ay malawak, at kung ito’y severe case na kailangan na ito na i-konsulta sa dermatologist. Some guide for Treatment and Skin Care Tips to Prevent Acne: Let’s start with natural remedies: this means that you can use plant and fruit extracts to care for your skin. Mas magaan at mura na paraan ito kaysa sa mga Acne treatments or medications available on the market now, tulad ng laser treatments at creams. Ang pag-treat ng Acne ay sa loob at labas ng ating katawan. Simulan natin sa loob: try natin kumain ng mabitamina na pagkain, o uminom ng mga vitamins at minerals na makakatulong sa ating balat para ito ay mag-renew at lumalaban sa skin break-outs. Ang mga Vitamins A,B,C,E, and Zinc, ay substances na tumutulong mag-renew ng skin cells and to get rid of blemishes by helping the body to internally cleanse it and rid if of impurities. Sa labas: Whether or not you have acne, it’s important to wash our skin daily to remove impurities, dead skin cells, and excess oil from the skin surface – sa face area ay maari na 2 to 3 times a day. Use warm, not hot, clean water. Gently wash your face, with your clean hands and dry it with a soft and clean cloth. Huwag magface scrub pag may Acne. Use a natural skin care products, maraming available sa market, basta ingat lang sa pag-pili at mag-tanong din sa mga kaibigan, mag-personal research o makinig sa expert, at sukatin nyo rin kung ito ay hiyang sa inyong balat. Kung ako naman ang inyong tatanungin, I recommend Rozglow Skin Care products dahil ito ay may mga taglay na Herbal at Natural ingredients, mula sa plants and fruit extracts, tulad ng malunggay na napakagaling na anti-bacterial, lavender oil to help relax your tired skin, green papaya and avocado to help get rid of the dry skin and other blemishes, also lightens your skin. Ilan lang ang mga ito sa magaling na ingredients ng Rozglow. At syempre ang UNO Opens its New Office in Hong Kong Rozglow Skin Care products ay subok ko na, dahil ito ang gamit ko nang mahigit 3 taon na rin. Ang skin type ko ay prone din sa acne dahil ito ay oily type. by APG Girls Club at Room, 502 5/F, 1 Lockhart Road in Wan Chai. The UNO President Mr. William Barbo and UNO top earner Mr. Mark Dapiton from Philippines will be present to grace the event. Lots of surprises and awards will be given away during the Grand launch. Kung ang tao daw ay palakain ng mga fried food or consumed large amounts of sugar and caffeine, ito ay pwede rin magcause ng Acne lalo na’t may allergies ang tao sa ganitong ingredients. It is true what many experts say that “what we eat” can cause Acne. This is not necessarily true with all people though, as I have mentioned above. Subalit ang pagkain ng healthy food ay tutuong nakakatulong for a healthier looking skin, healthy heart at body na rin! Marami pang iba’t-ibang paraan para malunasan ang Acne problems, and you will succeed basta matiyaga ka lang. Kung patuloy at consistent ang treatment mo, this problem can be solved within 8-12 weeks lang. For details please call Nes/Ferdie at telephone num: 3489 8895 or visit the UNO office in Wan Chai. Send all correspondence to Friends International Magazine by post or email. Right of Abode - Part 2 Why are the domestic helpers visa holders in HK not qualified for permanent residency in Hong Kong? What are the chances of getting the Hong Kong High Court to rule in our favour? What must domestic helpers do? Anna of Shatin By the time this Part 2 of my legal article is published, the hearing for the Right of Abode Petition for Evangeline Vallejos, who worked with a DH visa in HK for 25 years, would have been heard by High Court Justice Lam. Justice Lam reserved judgment by the end of September if not the following month of October 2011, hopefully before the 2nd petition filed by Daniel and Irene Domingo and before the 3rd petition filed by Josephine Gutierrez. Whatever the judgment, it would affect the decisions of the 2nd and 3rd petitions. We, the Overseas Filipino Workers in Hong Kong support the 3 petitions and proclaim that DH visa holders in Hong Kong for 7 years, whatever the nationality, should be treated equal before the law of Hong Kong and they must be equally entitled to permanent residency. The 1st petition was heard and the legal issues discussed were the same in the Part-1 of my August 2011 legal article as competently advocated by Senior Counsel Gladys Li. On the other hand, the Department of Justice through David Pannick, in rebuttal, argued on the following points: Firstly, all DH visa holders are expressly excluded as “not ordinarily residents” of Hong Kong irrespective of their 7 years or more stay in Hong Kong. Their employment contracts are not the same with the other employment contracts of expatriates in Hong Kong. DH are limited to 2 years contract; must stay, live and work in the household of their employers; must return to home country after 2 years or expiry of the contract whichever is earlier; they must depart 2 weeks after the expiry of their contracts unless they have entered into a new contract; just to name a few. These restrictions make their stay in Hong Kong extra-ordinary. Secondly, it is the intention of the legislature to exclude certain groups of people from becoming “ordinarily residents” of Hong Kong due to various reasons that are consistent to any sovereign government’s prerogative to manage and implement immigration rules and procedures, considered in the “best interest” of Hong Kong. The other groups are Diplomats, Military Personnel, convicted criminals and those who are currently serving prison terms. This is not 14 discriminatory and not against the Basic Law of Hong Kong, therefore constitutional. Thirdly, there is inherent power and discretion vested on Immigration Department and also as a matter of policy to control people’s entry, exit and stay in Hong Kong. It is reasonable to bar some groups from becoming permanent residents. Fourthly, there are social floodgates that will open. There are currently 300,000 plus DH visa holders, and assuming half are entitled to permanent residency, at 150,000 then the Hong Kong social infrastructure cannot cope, such as housing, hospital, social financial assistance, and more. Assume that half of them will petition their family members to become their dependents and enter Hong Kong; this will create massive strain on these social services and utilities of Hong Kong. The Department of Justice attempted to provide fresh and additional evidence in the form of statistics on the massive strain on these social services before the hearing to support the 4th argument but was denied by the court. From my own sources, I spoke to persons in high responsibility as to the floodgates statistics and I was “un-officially” informed that indeed, Filipinos who are permanent residents in Hong Kong are the 2nd highest recipients of HK government monthly subsidies. Our Kababayans who are Permanent Residents, have the 2nd highest number of social services claims, many are being questioned and some ended in prosecutions for false and fraudulent claims. Only the unemployed and physically unable Permanent Residents are supposed to apply for the monthly financial assistance, but many able bodied, educated, skilled permanent residents prefer to be on the dole outs and not work. On the other hand, the existing 300,000 or so holders of DH visas are adequately and properly accommodated by the current social infrastructure. There is adequate hospital, medical, dental and other social utilities and social assistance. The biggest concern is in fact the insufficient maternity facilities for Mainland mothers who come to Hong Kong to give birth. But such lack of supply does not deter the hospitals and clinics from extending their services to cater for such increasing need. In the same token, the Hong Kong government as a whole, should be equipped and come up to the challenge of providing more social services and assistance should it becomes necessary. There are ample surplus tax collections. Hong Kong spending is small relative to the amount of taxes collected every year. Solutions could be found specially when it only takes money to resolve it. It is the principle of equality, fairness and reasonableness that is of overriding importance. The other issue that added to the controversy, though irrelevant for court hearing, is whether this matter should be brought up to the Standing Committee of the Peoples National Congress in Beijing China. As a Barrister at Law in Hong Kong, I personally object to such suggestion. Hong Kong rule of law is independent from China. Hong Kong Courts are competent to deal with legal matters that affect the Hong Kong people. The Hong Kong Legislature would also be proficient to handle the consequence of the Hong Kong Court’s judgment should the decision be in favour of the DH visa holders to be entitled for right of abode. There may well be a deluge of applications but it is something wherein Hong Kong government could handle, given their exemplary and proven operational efficiency through the years. It was unspoken and not directly covered by the media but I should strongly point this out, that the judgment on this hearing will affect possible balance of political power should the DH visa holders allowed permanent residency. They will all become part of the HK soon “Universal Suffrage” and can vote for the Hong Kong leaders in the near future. The DAB was openly vocal and opposing this petition, encouraging grassroots resistance. But beware… even if these 3 petitions will fail, there will be more petitions the years ahead. The DH visa holders, specially the Filipino OFWs are permanent fixture of Hong Kong’s social and economic landscape. We contributed to the success of Hong Kong. We freed half of the Hong Kong Local workforce to make Hong Kong prosperous. The other OFWs who are now Permanent Residents pay the same taxes as the local workers. We all made Hong Kong the success story and this will continue in the future, but only with the OFWs and DH visa holders. …And Filipinos will not forget who are with us and who are against us in this fight for Right of Abode. We “know utang na loob”… and we will support those who supported us. We Filipinos, have endless HOPE for a better future in Hong Kong. MABUHAY LAHAT NG MGA DOMESTIC HELPERS. MGA BAYANI KAYONG TUNAY. The Connection of Physical and Spiritual Relationship Most of us have done things that we regret doing. And then to make things worse, we might lie about what we have done in order to cover up the matter. Sometimes, we get away with it, but the wrong doing remains. At other times, things get tense and end up having to deceive and manipulate even more for fear that we lose control over the situation. And in the process we lose more of our credibility. Wouldn’t it be better if we had a system that could be on alert all day long? Wouldn’t it be great if we could hear some kind of alarm, warning us not do do something that was unfair or just plain worng? Maybe it would be better if we had a way to sort thourgh the muddled choices we do or make. more peaceful, more level-headed more caring and less self-absorbed. Scriptures urges us to look closely at the way we think and act. In Corinthians 13:5 says we examine ourselves to see we are living in faith. Retain what is good, test everything and refrain fromn every kind of evil says in 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22. These passages, focus on the way we relate to others. They tell us that our inner disposition and the depth of our faith, life have a significant influence on our relationship. The value of examining our inner lives is a way we can measure how we express our love, kindness, and compassion to the people around us. It helps us to assess our progress as well. Congratulating us when we put aside ways of deception or resentment and correcting us when we have done the wrong path. Let’s love our work especially that we are away from our love ones. Keep doing what is good and be the distinctive sign of God’s compassion and love among those with whom we encounter, live and work with. Happy reading !! God Bless. In my sort of reading, that’s how the Holy Spirit wants to help us in our relationships. Praying for healing in our memories is wonderfully valuable but it would be even better if we could catch ourselves before we say or do something that could harm a relationship. The value of physical and spiritual examiniations is connected. Physically, you’re excited if your friend say we look slim and no more fats and we look like we lost pounds in our weight. Nothing makes us happy as a positive report after medical exam. We are happy when the doctor says that our cancer is in remission or when he declared us cancer free. Likewise in our spritual well being, it inspires us when we show how we are keeping our PEACE even when things don’t go our way. It makes us happy when we see that our burst of anger are diminishing. Equally important, we are grateful and relieved when our spouse and children tell us that we are becoming more loving and selfless. Ruel’s doctor told him “you need more exercise. Try to walk a mile a day. It would be good to your heart. Ruel did what the doctor advised him. Two months later when Ruel had a follow check-up (medical exam). This time the doctor said “Congratulations your heart is much better, plus your hypertention, your cholesterol count and your weight are all lower, keep it up.” Similarly on spiritual exam, when we begin to work on just once area in our lives, like moodiness or to be more generous, sometheing amazing happens. The Holy Spirit takes our efflorts and multiply them. We not only find ourselves less moody, we bocome friends International Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011 15 friends International Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011 AIA - HK’s Balanggot Bingo Buffet The Solution by Apostle Renato D. Carillo / ORAS NG HIMALA staff 1 “ Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the 2 Jews. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is 3 surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie5 -the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight 6 years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to 7 get well?” ”Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone 8 else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took 10 place was a Sabbath, and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, `Pick up your mat and walk.’ “12So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told 13 you to pick it up and walk?” The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was 14 there. Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” John 5:1-14 Four Revelations: 1. Our Lord Jesus Christ knows our situation, condition, illness, burden, suffering, and problem. He knows our thoughts, our speech, and our deeds and even our heartbeat. Nothing is hidden from His sight. As Jesus knew the condition of the man in John 5:1-14 who was lame for 38 years, the same is true with us; He does not only know our situations and conditions, but He also knows every aspect of our lives. He knows which part of our lives that needs to be mended or to be taken care. The solution is in Him. He knows all our needs today, tomorrow and forever. He is so much concerned with us. Indeed, we are so much important in the yes of God. And because He loves us, He wants to mend and make all aspects of our lives pleasant. 2. The Lord Jesus wants to remove our hearts and minds to our negative situation, condition, suffering, illness and problems and turn it unto Him for He is the solution of it. As Jesus removed the lame man’s attention to his miserable condition and switched it unto Him who is the solution of his problem, the same thing He wants to do unto us. Definitely, He wants to remove our hearts and minds from our negative situation, condition, illness, burden, suffering, and problem. Then, we will be able to see the solution. Otherwise, we will never know the solution, and our situation may even get worse. 16 34 Jesus is not only the solution to our problems, but He is the solution to all our problems and the problems of this world. He is the only solution. things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:25-34 3. We have to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is so much able to save us, to change us, to heal us, to bless us, and to give solution to our problems. Sickness and disease also come when we fear, when we have self-pity, when we have bitterness, and when we do not forgive those who sinned against us. So, we have to decide to refuse sinning against God. However, if we commit sin against God, we have to repent now. Our Lord Jesus did not try to heal the lame man in Bethesda, but he healed him. Therefore, we have to believe that Jesus Christ is so much able to give us the solution to all our problems. We have to believe that He is the only solution to all crises. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 We have to expect miracles from God. Why? It is because nothing is impossible for Him to do. He can do all things. Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Mark 10:27 4. Jesus does not want us to keep sinning again and again. As Jesus did not want the lame man to commit sin again, He does not also want us to keep sinning against Him again and again. It is because if we fall into sin again, our lives will be ruined; our future will be destroyed. Sin destroys lives, family, and future. Sin creates a dark world. And the wages of sin is death in the fire of hell. When we live in sin, whether we like it or not, we will get sick. Jesus said that illness is connected with sin. Sickness comes when we worry for anything. Anxiety shortens life span and it gives sicknesses and diseases. 25 “ Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more im26 portant than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than 27 they? Who of you by worrying can add a 28 single hour to his life? ”And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the 29 field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splen30 dor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O 31 you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?’ or `What shall we drink?’ 32 or `What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father 33 knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 ” Do you have a problem and a need today? The solution is in the Lord Jesus. He is the greatest solution of all. Just ask the Lord to forgive you and say this prayer: “Father God, please forgive me for all my sins in thoughts, words and deeds. Forgive me for bitterness, self-pity, resentment, jealousy, envy, fear, anger, hatred, lying, cheating, gambling, smoking, negative thoughts words, action and reactions. Forgive me also for watching or reading pornographic film and magazines or in the internet, forgive me also for believing to horoscope and fortune -tellers. Forgive me also for committing adultery, fornication in deeds or in thoughts. Forgive us also, Father God for worshipping to idols and bowing before carved images, I renounce all these. I now forgive everyone who sinned against me. I release forgiveness and forget what they have done or said against me. I now also forgive myself. Lord Jesus, I now accept you as my Lord and Savior and my healer. Lord Jesus, I invite you to come into my life and reign in my heart. I need you, and I will abide in you. I believe that the solution of all my problems and burdens is in You, Lord. And please write my name in the book of life. Thank you Father God, in the most precious name your Son, Lord Jesus Christ. I pray. Amen.” ***** You are welcome to attend our! Eddie Villanueva When somebody tells you, he doesn’t fear anything, he’s probably not being very honest. As it is, there are so many known kinds of fears or phobias that there are corresponding words for fear for each letter in the alphabet. While some fears may be called legit such as claustrophobia or fear of confined spaces, dystychiphobia or fear of accidents, panthophobia or fear of suffering, and myctophobia or fear of darkness, there are also some that seem not as sensible to other people. Imagine how there are people who actually suffer from extreme fear of garlic or alliumphobia, fear of hearing good news or euphobia, fear of books or bibliophobia, and fear of sitting or cathisophobia. God” (2 Corinthians 7:1). The fear of the Lord empowers us to rightly serve Him. “Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2:11). The fear of the Lord enables us to reverently worship Him. “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about Him” (Psalm 89:7). “… I will come into your house in the multitude of your mercy: and in your fear will I worship toward your holy temple” (Psalm 5:7). The Preacher wisely concluded when he summed up the whole duty of man: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). According to the Bible, however, there is one kind of fear that is good for people to have; it is the only kind of fear that makes a person wise. Amidst life’s fears, we must not lose our absolute fear and awe of God. Because it is a blessing of His Spirit that will keep us faithfully following after Him (Isaiah 11:2-3). Psalm 111:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. All who obey His Laws have good understanding. His praise lasts forever.” You shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear Him, and keep His commandments, and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him, and join to Him (Deuteronomy 13:4,6-11). What exactly does it mean to fear the Lord? Proverbs 8:13 states it simply: “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the fraudulent mouth, do I hate.” Go through life fearing God. A person who fears the Lord hates evil – and everything associated with it: pride, arrogance, evil way, and lies. In the same breadth and length, a person who fears the Lord loves the Lord – and everything He is for: grace, humility, righteousness, and truth. Psalm 1 illustrates this best: “1God blesses those people who refuse evil advice and won’t follow sinners or join in sneering at God. 2 Instead, the Law of the LORD makes them happy, and they think about it day and night. 3They are like trees growing beside a stream, trees that produce fruit in season and always have leaves. Those people succeed in everything they do. 4That isn’t true of those who are evil, because they are like straw blown by the wind. 5Sinners won’t have an excuse on the day of judgment, and they won’t have a place with the people of God. 6The LORD protects everyone who follows him, but the wicked follow a road that leads to ruin.” Living each day in genuine fear of God keeps one’s way pure and right. It leads to wisdom that empowers him to correctly distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong – and justly choose the good and right. Ultimately, it makes a person do exactly as Proverbs 4 exhorts: “14Don’t follow the bad example of cruel and evil people. 15Turn aside and keep going. Stay away from them.” Simply put, the fear of the Lord helps us avoid sin. Moses, testified: “… God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that you sin not” (Exodus 20:20). The fear of the Lord aids us to perfect holiness. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of 20 SalamatsaRozglow Ako po si Lyn Arellano. Miss Philippines beauty queen Shamcey Supsup came fourth in the Miss Universe 2011 contest. Many of her fans and fellow Filipinos were pleased at the result and gave their congratulations. Judge Perez Hilton, who posed the question, called her a “dumb b----” (after the event) and claimed she lost the pageant because of it. “Sometimes you can’t discount these possibilities,” she said. “She lost it because of that question. She was definitely the front-runner before that,” said Hilton. Another camp thinks Supsup was penalized by liberal judges for her conservative and Christian response to the marriage question. Keith Lewis, co-director of the Miss California competition, also issued a statement declaring that he is “personally saddened and hurt” by Miss California’s answer. “Even though you didn’t get the Miss Universe crown, your reward is in heaven and I know that God is very honored by your answer. Other people could deny their faith, but you didn’t!” wrote one commenter on her Facebook page. On Twitter, one user jokingly tweeted: “New meme: Shamcey Supsup, who rejected Miss Universe rather than deny her God. Assured guest spot on Fox and Friends.” This isn’t the first time religion and politics possibly influenced beauty pageant results. Back in 2009, Miss California was attacked in the Miss USA contest for voicing her opposition to gay marriage in response to a question. Susup herself, however, isn’t upset with her fourth place finish. “We are not the judges there, and I accepted the fact that I’m third runner-up and I’m already happy. I think we should be happy also for Ms. Angola that she won, and I think that she also deserves the crown,” she said. The Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc, which ran the Miss Philippines contest that Supsup won, said “her dazzling performance and excellent answer, besting more than 80 of the world’s loveliest women, clearly showed the innate beauty and intelligence of the Filipina.” In fact, many of her fans thought her performance and answer was so good that she deserved first, not fourth. Madalas ngayon silang tuksuhin dalawa sa set. Pareho naman single sina Glaiza at Sid ngayon , dib a?. Magkakabarkada sila nina Felix at Dominic Roco. Eh, very effective ang beauty niya show. Siya ang pinaka-fresh at talagang maganda siya.
