Dr. Apfelstadt holds
degrees in vocal music
education from the
University of Toronto,
the University of Illinois,
and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
She also has a diploma
in piano performance from the Royal
Conservatory of Music in Toronto. From
1993–2010, she was Professor and Director
of Choral Activities at Ohio State University
in Columbus, where she also served as
Associate Director for the School of Music
from 2008–2010. She has published over
70 articles on choral music, and serves on
the editorial boards of The Choral Scholar
and the ACDA Choral Journal. She is also the
choral column editor for Canadian Music
Educator.
Nathan Beeler is a music
educator, conductor and
performer from Nova
Scotia. He is currently
the department head
of the Halifax All City
Music
Program.
He
conducts the Dalhousie
University Wind Ensemble and the Halifax
City Schools Orchestra. Nathan holds an
undergraduate degree in music education
from Acadia University and a Master’s
degree in conducting from the University
of Manitoba where he studied conducting
with Earl Stafford, former music director of
Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Nathan is
a frequent guest conductor with the Halifax
community orchestra Nova Sinfonia.

Alain Cazes
Jim Doxas
Alain Cazes has taught
at the Conservatoire de
Musique de Montréal
and the Université de
Montréal. He teaches
in summer music
camps like the Orford
Art Center and the
International Brass Symposium of Ascoli
Pecino in Italy.
A native Montréaler,
Jim studied at McGill
University, and
established himself
early on as versatile
percussionist. He was
honored with Yamaha’s
Rising Star Award in
recognition of outstanding achievement
as an instrumentalist, and was a featured
artist at Carnegie Hall in a gala performance
celebrating young North American talent.
Curently principal tuba with the Orchestre
Métropolitain in Montreal, he has also
performed with the Montreal Symphony
and many orchertras in the world. He is also
co-director of the Orchestre Metropolitain
Choir and musical director of the Orchestre
Symphonique Pop de Montréal. Alain is
a full time Professor at McGill University
where he conducts the Wind Orchestras
and teaches Conducting. He has written
numerous arrangements for a variety of
instrumental ensembles.

Gordon Foote directs
the University of
Toronto Jazz Orchestra
(UTJO), and previously
spend 26 years as a
professor in the Jazz
Studies Program at the
Schulich School of Music
of McGill University. He served as Dean
(interim), Associate Dean (Academic and
Student Affairs), Chair of the Department of
Performance, Director of Graduate Studies,
Chair of the Jazz Area, and coordinated
the McGill Jazz Orchestras. He previously
spent 6 years as a professor at St. Francis
Xavier University. Gordon is one of the
pioneers of jazz education in Canada, being
instrumental in the development and
implementation of the first undergraduate
and graduate university jazz studies
programs in the country. As a saxophonist
and artist for Conn-Selmer, Gordon has
performed in Canada, Europe and the
United States.
Jim’s work can be heard on over 150
albums and soundtracks, and he is a
popular featured artist at jazz festivals
worldwide. Jim has been received Felix
and Juno Awards, as well as nominations
for Academy and Grammy Awards. Jim is
currently a lecturer and teacher at McGill
University, while also balancing an active
performance schedule.
Ken Foote
Ken Foote earned
Bachelor of Music and
Bachelor of Education
degrees from Mount
Allison University, a
Master of Education
from Saint Mary’s
University, a Master
of Music from Boston University, and
completed post graduate studies through
Acadia University, Villanova University,
and the University of Miami. Ken has
performed with a wide range of ensembles
and conducted numerous school and
community bands. He remains active as an
adjudicator, a clinician, a conductor, and is
currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce
degree. Ken has served with a number of
community organizations including terms
on the executive of the Nova Scotia School
Boards Association and the Nova Scotia
Band Association. The Nova Scotia Music
Educators’ Association has awarded Ken
the Musica Viva for his years of dedicated
service to music educators and students.

Mark Fonder
Jake Hanlon
Wendy McCallum
Dr. Fonder has taught
at Ithaca College since
1989, and is a former
chairman of the Music
Education department.
A graduate and two-time
fellowship recipient at
the University of Illinois,
Dr. Fonder has also served on the faculties
of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay,
the University of Texas-San Antonio, the
University of Washington, VanderCook
College and the Eastman School of Music.
He authored a book, Patrick Conway and his
Famous Band, and has published over 30
articles in leading music journals. He was
chair of the Music Educators Journal Editorial
Committee from 1998-2002 and for 10
years has edited the Journal of Historical
Research in Music Education. Dr. Fonder has
played principal trombone with the Green
Bay (Wisconsin) Symphony, the Green Bay
Packer Band, and the San Antonio Brass, and
for such entertainers as Robert Goulet, Rich
Little, and Rita Moreno.
Jake Hanlon has
imprinted himself on the
East Coast Canadian Jazz
scene as a composer,
performer and educator.
Hanlon has earned two
ECMA nominations for
Jazz Recording of the
Year for his albums as a leader, Follow (2012)
and Autumn Song (2015). Hanlon’s third
nomination for that category is for BiCostal
Collective Chapter 4 in 2015.
Dr. McCallum holds
Bachelor of Music and
Bachelor of Education
degrees from Brandon
University and
completed a Master of
Music in Instrumental
Conducting at the
University of North Dakota. She received
her Doctor of Musical Arts from the
University of North Texas, where she
served as a Doctoral Conducting Associate
and Teaching Fellow in the Wind Studies
Department with Eugene Corporon. She
has served as the conductor of the Long
& McQuade All-Star Wind Ensemble in
Winnipeg, as guest conductor of the
Winnipeg Wind Ensemble, and as a solo
and ensemble adjudicator and clinician for
concert and jazz ensembles in Canada and
the United States.

Cynthia Johnston Turner
Cynthia Johnston
Turner serves as a
faculty member with
the summer Performing
Arts Institute at
Pennsylvania’s Wyoming
Seminary and as a
conductor with the
Syracuse Society of New Music, the Austrian
Festival Orchestra, and the Paris Lodron
Ensemble in Salzburg. Cynthia completed
her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of
Education degrees at Queens University,
her Master of Music in music education and
conducting at the University of Victoria, and
her D.M.A. at the Eastman School of Music.
Cynthia has guest conducted the National
Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain, the
Syracuse Symphony (“Symphoria”), the
National Youth Band of Canada, Concordia
Santa Fe, the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble,
the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and many
more ensembles.

Hanlon is an alumni of the University of
North Texas (2008) and Saint Francis Xavier
University (2003). Hanlon also is an alumni
of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead composition
residency in Washington, DC (2007).
As an Educator Hanlon was the Jazz Guitar
Teaching Fellow at the University of North
Texas in 2007-2008. Since completing his
Masters Degree he has been on faculty at
Saint Francis Xavier University, where he
teaches Jazz Guitar, Jazz Composition, Jazz
Improvisation as well as a Rhythm Section
Seminar.

Jeff Joudrey
An organ performance
graduate of Acadia
University, Jeff pursued
postgraduate training
at the International
Academy in Haarlem,
The Netherlands, and
at McGill University.
He established the renowned First Baptist
Girls’ Choir of Truro in 1983, and three
years later founded the Halifax Camerata
Singers. In 2001 he was appointed Chorus
Master for the Symphony Nova Scotia
Chorus, of which the Halifax Camerata
Singers is the core choir. He has been
Assistant Master Conductor at the Institute
of Choral Conducting for the Nova Scotia
Choral Federation (NSCF), and served
on the faculties of Dalhousie and Acadia
universities. Since 1981 Jeff has lived in
Truro where he is Director of Music at First
Baptist Church.

Jonathan Dagenais
Wesley Ferreira
Jonathan Dagenais
holds a Masters degree
in Wind Orchestra
Conducting from McGill
University, a Bachelor’s
degree in Composition
from the Université de
Montréal as well as a
CEGEP Diploma in Music (classical percussion
interpretation). In addition to orchestra
conducting and CEGEP teaching, Mr.
Dagenais is pursuing a career as a composer
for wind orchestra. His first major work,
the symphonic tone poem Stella has been
performed by many Québec university wind
orchestras and has been part of MusicFest
Canada’s concert band syllabus since 2009.
Since 2005, Mr. Dagenais has acted as
the conductor and artistic director of the
Orchestre à Vents Non Identifié (OVNI), a
Montreal wind orchestra he co-founded.
Wesley Ferreira joined
the music faculty
at Colorado State
University in 2011 as
Assistant Professor of
Clarinet following four
years in the position of
single-reeds instructor
at Mount Allison University in Canada. He
has been featured soloist with numerous
wind bands and orchestras in North America
and Europe, and has been broadcast
nationally on both Canadian and Australian
Broadcasting Corporations. Ferreira’s album
with Soprano Helen Pridmore, Beyond the
Shores and the Ships, was awarded 2013
Classical Recording of the Year at the East
Coast Music Awards. His debut solo album
entitled Madison Avenue was released in
2014. Ferreira holds degrees from the
University of Western Ontario (B.Mus.) and
Arizona State University (M.Mus. & D.M.A).
Paul Tynan
Trumpet player/composer Paul Tynan is presently an Associate Professor
of music at St. Francis Xavier University where he teaches jazz trumpet,
arranging, and jazz history. He has released four albums as a leader:
Radio Infrequency, Digital/ Spiritual, NJPT and Freedom and Jealousy. His
fifth recording (co-lead with Baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington) entitled
Bi-Coastal Collective was released in 2009 to critical acclaim.
Paul has served on the faculties of San Jose State University, Chabot
College, the Nova Scotia Honor Jazz Program, and University of North Texas Summer Trumpet
Workshop. He received his Masters in jazz studies from University of North Texas where
he was a Teaching Fellow in jazz improvisation, large jazz ensembles and a member of the
internationally acclaimed One O’Clock Lab Band.

Alastair Kay has performed for the
last 28 years with some of the best
orchestras, entertainers, and jazz
artists around. His virtuosity and
versatility have made him the firstcall for most studio, musical theatre,
and jazz gigs in Toronto.
Mr. Kay is a consummate trombone soloist who currently leads the
trombone section of Rob McConnell’s Grammy Award-winning jazz
ensemble The Boss Brass. He has worked with leading symphony
orchestras as well as entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Ella
Fitzgerald. One of the busiest musicians on the planet, Al also finds
time to chair the brass department at Toronto’s Humber College.

Acadia University is proud to offer two tuition scholarships to attend the
Summer Music Academies Concert Band Camp in Wolfville, NS. The tuition

Creative Music Workshop Scholarship (AFM Only)
One full scholarship to attend the core program of the 2015 Creative Music
Workshop (CMW) taking place in Halifax July 2-12. Sponsored by the Halifax

CMW summer intensive gathers renowned musicians and educators from

Long & McQuade trophies will be awarded to students who play
an outstanding solo during their ensemble’s performance at the
Festivals. To be eligible, students must be listed on the Soloists
form supplied to the ensemble director.

The most outstanding soloist will receive a Long & McQuade
trophy and a Long & McQuade gift card in the amount of $100. To
