According to the University policy an assessment item submitted after the due date, without
an approved extension, will be penalized at a rate of 10% per day of the possible maximum
mark for the assessment item for each day or part day that the item is late. You can submit
your assignment up to 4 days after due date. Late submission subjects to maximum 40%
deduction in overall marks. Assessment items submitted more than four days after the due
date will be awarded zero marks.

others. The penalties are severe!
11.6. Plagiarism

Building on Success at Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson’s aren’t just motorcycles. They’re an American Legend, known for their
unique style, sound, and power ever since the first one was assembled in a backyard
workshop in 1903. “People want more than two wheels and a motor,” explains HarleyDavidson CEO Jeffrey Bluestein, “Harleys represent something very basic – a desire for
freedom, adventure, and individualism.”
Twenty years ago, Harley also represented everything that was wrong with American
manufacturing. The company’s production facilities were outdated and inefficient, keeping
prices high. Quality was so poor that owners sometimes joked they needed two Harleys –
one to ride and one for parts. As fed-up consumers turned to motorcycles made by
Japanese and German manufacturers. Harley-Davidson’s sales plummeted and the company
teetered on bankruptcy.
Today, however, Harley-Davidson (http://www.harley-davidson.com) is a company reborn.
The company posted its 17th consecutive year of profits in 2002. With retail sales growing at
Superior University Lahore

19 percent a year, Harley-Davidson has roared off with 50 percent of the motorcycle
market. How did this turnaround happen? With single-minded focus on just one thing:
turning cost-effective manufacturing excellence into a company-wide passion.
The quest for excellence begins with product design. Every component in a Harley bike is
put through a rigorous design process that examines its manufacturability according to
quality standards. Special software estimates the cost of each design proposal so that
expenses can be carefully controlled. Vendors hoping to supply various components to
Harley-Davidson automatically receive this same information electronically, integrating
them into the product development cycle.
Lasers and robots automate many production tasks. Components ready for assembly are
loaded onto specially designed carts that swivel 360 degrees and can be lowered or raised
to suit different workers or tasks. The carts then move into workstations where groups of
employees assemble them into motorcycle frames. No motorcycle leaves a Harley-Davidson
plant without a final quality inspection. A team of test drivers revs up and rides each
motorcycle, checking operating quality and listening for the classic Harley sound.
Employees play a critical role in Harley’s production facilities. Working in teams, many
employees are cross trained to perform a variety of production tasks. Each work team is
asked to constantly look for ways to build better motorcycles. The company has
implemented many employee generated ideas for improving equipment, factory layout, and
production processes.
Industry analysts say Harley Davidson’s rebirth and continued growth is intricately tied to its
dedication to quality and efficiency in its operations and production processes. “HarleyDavidson succeeded because they aligned all stakeholders – from customers to
shareholders to employees and suppliers,” says consultant Stephen Shapiro. “They created
the Harley Davidson family, where everyone including unions, are united in common
purpose.”
Questions:
1. How has focusing on quality in its operations and production supported Harley
Davidson’s growth?
2. What external factors have led to this focus?

14.3 Case-study Guidelines (annexure iv)
Guidelines Regarding Case Studies
A case is a scenario that gives you the opportunity to identify problems and recommend a
course of action in a business situation. The case may be real or fictional, but will usually
represent a complex situation with no ready solutions.
Various case studies will be provided to students so that they can analyze real life issues
faced by managers in the organizations and then suggest solutions.
Stages in preparing a case analysis
1. Understanding the case study.
2. Identify the core problem(s) in the case study.
3. Analyze the issues in the context of a theoretical framework.
4. Exploring alternative solutions with reference to a theoretical framework.
5. Choosing the best solution.
6. Making recommendations for action.
1. Understanding of case study
Your first task is to understand the scenario you are given. When you read the
scenario you should identify the facts of the case. The following questions can guide
you in doing this.
•
What is the case study about?
•
What are the characters involved in the case study?
•
What are the different dilemmas in the case?
•
What are the actions undertaken in the case to resolve the problems?
As you are reading you will also need to fill in gaps based on your knowledge of
theory and of the world and ignore irrelevant details.
2. Identify the core problem in the case study
As you identify the facts of the case you will begin to think about the problems and
to decide which problems are core problems. In doing this you will need to
•

Distinguish between symptoms of the major problems and the major problems

themselves.
•
Distinguish between immediate and longer term problems.
•
Find evidence to support your decision about what you believe to be the core
problems.
3. Analyze the issues in the context of a theoretical framework
As you identify the core problem(s) you will begin to analyze the issues underlying
these problems. The following steps assist with this.
•
Identify any bias in the way the case is described.
•
Classify the factors that influence the problem.
•
Reflect on theoretical principles from your course that might explain aspects of
the case.
•
Apply analytical models from your course to further illuminate the situation.
•
Identify the decisions that need to be made.
•
Identify strategic issues.
•
Identify risk factors.
•
Identify historical precedents.
4. Exploring alternative solutions with reference to a theoretical framework
As you are analyzing the issues you will begin to think about alternative solutions.
You should:
•
Consider the long and the short term
•
Define the alternative possible solutions
•
Compare the alternative solutions in regard to theoretical grounding, strengths
and weaknesses, risk factors.
5. Choosing the best solution
As you explore the alternative solutions you will begin to decide on the best solution
for the organization in solving its problems. It is important at this stage to provide a
justification for the solution you choose.

recommendation or recommendations.
At this stage you should do the following:
•
Express your recommendation(s) precisely.
•
Ensure that your recommendations are complementary.
•
Ensure that it is feasible to implement the
recommendations.
2. How do you present your case analysis?
A case analysis is presented as a report. The following is a suggested structure for a
case analysis report:
Introduction:
Describe the situation and identify the main problem.
Body:
Analyze the problem and the issues underlying the problem.
Present and analyze alternative solutions to the problem.
Conclusion:
Identify the best solution.
