Bailey International Service Travel Scholarships Faculty Sponsor Information Sheet – Updated 10/13/15 FRED S. BAILEY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP
FOR CAUSE-DRIVEN LEADERS
The FRED S. BAILEY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP FOR CAUSE-­‐DRIVEN LEADERS offers scholarships of $600-­‐1800 dollars for travel to University of Illinois undergraduate students leading international service projects. The experience of interning, volunteering, and/or studying abroad has a long-­‐lasting effect on students. These programs often come with significant financial costs, particularly in regards to travel. Award Information The Fred S. Bailey International Travel Scholarship program will fund up to 75% of the total cost of international travel with a service component. Awards range from $600–$1800, depending on duration of study and associated costs (price of air travel to/from country, length of stay, etc.) For more information on maximum allowable funding for specific countries, see Appendix I: Bailey International Travel Scholarships, Countries Listed by Funding Zone. Student must be enrolled as an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign campus during the current or previous academic semester. Student need not be enrolled in classes at the time of the travel but must be working toward a degree at UIUC. Students who will have already graduated as of the departure date of the trip are not eligible to apply. Selection Criteria -­‐ Students will be selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to the project/program, long-­‐term career goals in international development or related fields, the trip’s potential impact on the student’s learning and professional development, potential for positive impact on the host community and financial need. Application Period Applications will be reviewed by the Bailey Scholarship committee during two application periods: Spring (October 14 – November 13), and Summer/Fall (March 14 – April 15). ROLE OF THE FACULTY SPONSOR
1. Letter of Support – A letter of support must be submitted with the student’s application by faculty sponsor. The letter should discuss the international service project’s potential impact on the student’s learning and professional development as well as the student’s potential for success in the position. Please discuss the student’s qualifications to complete the project and any previous experience with the project the student has. 1. Learning Goals – Assist student with development of a list of measurable learning objectives for the international service project. Learning objectives must be signed off and approved by faculty sponsor. Faculty sponsor reviews and approves a written report of the student’s progress towards meeting their learning objectives and toward completion of the proposed project. Acceptable formats for this report will be communicated by the Bailey Scholarship Director but will require a minimum of 2000 words.
